freakjeep93 Posted December 19, 2009 Share Posted December 19, 2009 i have a chevy silverado 1981 292 straight 6(not factory swapped in) and an auto tranny. but ive got one problem ive got no reverse when its cold. it will sit and rev untill you warm it up a little bit and then it still slips reall bad. anyone know whats goin on? Automan2164 Posted December 19, 2009 Share Posted December 19, 2009 Because, you need the clutch pedal, slave(if applicable), linkage, resivoir, transmission, correct bellhousing, correct flywheel, correct driveshaft, clutch assembly, finding a trans, column shifter(if on tree), and as I said before, I HIGHLY DOUBT, Chevy made it as easy as jeep did. Bellhousings are sold with transmissions, I'd tell anybody trying to sell me a tranny without just 'exactly' what they could do with the trans (unless it happened to be cheap enough that it was understood). Chevy 6er bolt pattern is the same as a SBC, and a BBC, as I recall. Also, I seem to think the flywheel is also the same between a 6er and a SBC, but I could be wrong. Regardless, you can get a clutch easy enough. The tcase will need a different input in it, and may or may not have other issues, all of which can be worked around by simply looking for a trans and tcase that are together (they often are). Automatics were more often to have NP203s, where as a manual more often got a NP205 (as a very 'loose' rule). So, there may be potential to upgrade there anyways. Driveshafts, you're on your own. I think they put the rear of the block in the same place regardless of motor (6er, SBC, BBC), so any other truck with the same trans/tcase should yield the correct driveshafts. It's early GM, just start sticking parts together. It normally works. That said, it would be easier just to put another slush box in. Or even to rebuild that one. They aren't smoke and mirrors, or even PFM. mines only 2wd I would rebuild it or if you don't mind pushing it out of parking spots just drive it,they will usually work in fwd gears long after rev goes out. yea the fwd gears work and rev works some of the time just when its cold it dies. this could be a result of it having no trans fluin in it when i got it . also there is no gaurd wunder the flywheel its just open... and the guy who gave it too me still hasnt signed the reggi to me and won't untill i plate the frame and completly rebuild it :roll: Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
