dunl
If I wanted to mock up an engine swap to an AX-15, do I need one from a Comanche, or is there any difference in input shafts and stuff for one from a Cherokee or YJ? Thanks.
Geonovast
Nope, they're all the same in that regard. XJ/MJ AX-15s are identical, and the YJ/TJ units clock the T-case a few degrees differently, but the fronts are all the same.

Pete M
My brain is telling me that the early years had a different diameter input shaft (took a different pilot bearing). :hmm:
jeepaholic
pete is right..different pilot bearing..
BlueXJ
The research that I have done says that the pilot shaft size changed with the end of the Renix years on XJs which I assume is the same time for MJs.
dunl
So is my 1990 fine, or does it have the different shaft/bearing?
dunl
So if I have a 1990, the info I can find is that the Renix controls were switched starting in 1991. So I would have the different shaft/ bearing? The bearing/ shaft diameter, not so big a deal....the shaft...does the length differ?
Geonovast
Shaft length is the same, but the diameter at the tip for the bearing was changed. If you're putting a newer AX-15 on a renix motor, you'll need a 74 CJ 304 pilot bushing.
dunl
Thanks, I'm thinking of using the AX-15 to swap to a diesel. And to mock it up, long as the shaft is the right length, I can do that. But to mate the actual AX-15 I have, I'll need to find another bearing that fits this diameter, or just swap AX-15's as well when I pull the engine (as I know which bearing I need for the later AX-15's). Would my 90 AX-15 likely be the same as an 87 YJ, or possibly different (barring possible swaps).
Eagle
Would my 90 AX-15 likely be the same as an 87 YJ, or possibly different (barring possible swaps). An 87 XJ or MJ would have a Peugeot BA 10/5 transmission. I'm not certain what tranny the YJ used in that year. For the XJ and MJ, the change from the BA 10/5 to the AX-15 was made in the middle of the 1989 production year.
Pete M
As far as I know, the YJs roughly mirrored the MJs with inline 6 manual transmissions year to year (even though the YJs never got the 4.0 renix).
dunl
Hmm, I'll have to check with the guy I am getting info from. His 87 Wrangler now sports a om617 Mercedes motor, mated up to an AX-15. Must have swapped the tranny too.
dunl
PO swapped the tranny, and he's not sure which he has.
Pete M
AX-15 on the left, Peugeot on the right. Note the line of bolts on the top (and on the bottom) that split the Peugeot into a left and right half.
Gr8plainsDriftr
would the tail shaft/out put stuff from a ba10/5 work on a 2wd ax-15? reason i ask is because i found a 2wd ax-15, its the only thing hanging me up from finishing my HO swap. i doubt it will work, but maybe someone has tryed it? Gr8plainsDriftr
probably not worth it anyway. Anyone want to buy a np249 or a good ba10/5 so i can buy a 4wd ax-15?
