My MJ has no power :(

Recommended Posts

Hi people I'm new here :wavey: I just got an 86 Comanche and put on a new valve cover because the previous one was warped on one side causing a leak..I can't seem to get the Jeep to go over 40-45mph (not sure if my speedo is correct)..now I have noticed that there seems to be 1strait pipe thats cut right at the engine..but there is a separate manifold going to the tail pipe :huh???: I don't know what this guy was thinking lol..its the first cylinder that has no manifold...he said the engine was rebuilt recently.. What do you guy think could cause loss of power? I have noticed a hissing and some vacuum lines are disconnected so that does need to be taken care of but I wouldn't think that would cause this much loss of power. Also, I haven't had a chance to do to much work on it so excuse my ignorance..but there is some type of linkage under the the throttle body that is just hanging there nothing is connected.. Any help is appreciated..

Edit: Forgot to mention its a 2.5l

Thanks

Salty

The vacuum lines can have a huge effect on power. Check and fix them all but a common culprit is the map sensor line.

Hmm, ok I'll check that later also. Thanks for the help so far guys

Also do you guys know what the belt is called that goes from the alternator to the a/c condenser? Its starting to fray..it looks really short.

Does it have the v-belts or the serpentine belt?

It looks like it has a v-belt going from the a/c condenser to the alternator and there's a different belt for the rest of it..Sorry, I haven't really done much engine work before...

Here's a pic, not the ones you guys wanna see of the problem but of my 2 jeeps jamminz.gif Btw thats not me in the bed that my cuz

That is just the heat riser, not part of the exhaust really. Definitly not your power loss problem. Check those vacuum hoses.

Hmm well is there suppose to be something connected to that tube? It smokes a lot lol

The smoke would be from an exhaust leak, but that's not the cause. That hole is just part of the heatshield, and there's supposed to be a hose that runs from that to the intake box, to help heat the air as it comes in. Supposedly heated air improves mileage.

As originally set up, there is a flimsy hose that goes from there to the bottom of your air filter housing, where it connects to a vacuum controlled valve that when the engine is cold, it will pull warm air off of the exhaust through that hose to warm the engine up faster, after the engine is warm, the vacuum closes the valve and it pulls cold air in from another point on the airbox. Not sure about the smoke, maybe oil burning off from a valve cover oil leak? Or a cracked exhaust manifold? Fix your vacuum leaks, and see if that helps, if not you may want to do a compression test, or pull off the cat convertor and see if that makes a difference in power...may be plugged up. Timing could be a problem too if it was recently rebuilt? Did you say the PO rebuilt it? I can't remember and didnt see it by scrolling down. You have several areas to check. Good Luck!

Yea they said it was rebuilt..I did find the belts that I needed...but now I have a bigger problem..they had this thing so rigged up that the pulley tensioner is rubbing on the belt that goes from the a/c to the alternator...I installed them and drove it down the road a mile or 2 and the long fan belt snapped off bc I had it loose (bc the tensioner was hitting the smaller belt and tearing it up)...do you guys know of a place where I can get a different type of pulley tensioner that will fit my 2.5l block?
