Hey guys! hope your fathers day is going great. anyways, I've posted a couple times since, but I'm having trouble with my transfer case. I'm supposed to have a peugeot (BA10-5) transmission and a NP-231 transfercase on my 1987 Comanche. Here's where it gets weird. I've counted the splines on the input shaft time and time again and it always come out to being 23 splines :???: ? I know that the 231 is supposed to have 21 splines to compliment the tranny. I did some research to figure out what was going on and i came to this: http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/np ... _gears.htm About half way down the page there is a diagram showing the difference between the 21 spline TC and the 23 spline TC. It says that the 23 spline NP231 is supposed to have a long input shaft of 2.1", but my input shaft is more close to 1.2" than 2.1" :huh???: ? So I'm coming to you guys now. I'm completely confused. HELP PLEASE!!!

That's perplexing for sure. :hmm:

Can you snap a picture of the trans, t-case, and the splines at the end of the input shaft? That'll help confirm everything.

take a pic of the underside of the tranny....we can tell you if it's a BA10/5 or an AX15..........somebody may have swapped it in the past.

haha yea. the TC came from my truck. I'm thinking that one of the po's may have rebuilt both the tranny and the tc and put 23 spline shafts in it. i don't know why someone would do that but ok. here are the pics you guys asked for...

The Tranny (Peugeot. I'm 99% sure it is one...)

Well, I've got some good news for ya. That's an AX-15 trans.

Notice the giant ring of metal under the shifter area in this picture. If you clean some of the grime off, you'll find it on yours.

Pete gave you the good news, here is the bad. You are missing half your balls! . What is up with that input bearing? Did you do that attempting to remove, or was it like that? If it was like that, those ball bearing may have ended up in the case.

After taking another look, it appears that there is NO INNER RACE! Did the PO assemble bearing pieces so that the balls are riding right on the input shaft? If so, find a replacement for sure. Hopefully it just looks like that due to the photo angle.

Well the good thing is you definitely have an AX-15.

I seriously doubt 23 spline shafts even exist for the BA 10/5. AFAIK, the XJ/MJ/YJ were the only 4wd vehicles to use that transmission.

haha yea. my beearings are all screwed up. i forgot to take the rear driveshaft off for the tow back home (100+ miles :grrrr: ) so i think some of the bearings went to crap as it was being towed. oh well. i think i'm either going to go to the local pick n pull($60) or rebuild it($150). I like the $60 option waaaay more, but its proving to be pretty hard to find a 23 spline TC. grrr.

Towing shouldn't have been any more wear and tear than driving that same distance. There was probably a problem before, and moving that distance just made it much worse.

ah ok. thats most likely the problem. i was looking around at NP231s and i was wondering if there was a rebuild kit to change it to the rubicon's 4:1 gear ratio? would the gears fit in a non-4:1 ratio? (i don't even know my current gears?)

There are the Teralow 4:1 kits, but from what I understand they're rather expensive.

A stock NP231 Lo-range ratio is 2.72:1. Unless you do a lot of offroading with huge tires or very steep hills, your money is better spent in finding axles a step lower.
