tranny removal aw4

do the two bolts at the top of the bell housing with the star shaped heads need to come out to drop the tranny? what tool do i need? How many bolts around the bell housing. Try to drop it but it won't budge.

If those 2 bolts are the same as the manual trannys, then yes they need to come out, and they are require an E-10 (at least I think that's the right number) reverse torx socket bit.

There called "external" torx {Star} bolts (screws) and you need a set like This

 

Also, the one on the right side hold the dip stick/filler tube, once you remove that bolt, you can pull the top section of the filler tube out, And if you have not realized yet, the bottom section of the filler tube is welded to the pan :doh:

Once you get the bolts out, go buy replacement regular hex head bolts. Once you have the fun experience of getting them out, you don't want the even funner experience of getting them back in.

Getting them out wasnt too bad, we cut the whole tranny tunnel out (it was the donor). Good idea to replace them tho.
