There's no 16.5" tires...

It seems nothing is made for a 16.5" rim anymore... Interco still does, but they're it.

 

 

Kinda sucks.

 

 

You can still get military Goodyear bias 36" tires and radial old style 37" MT's for a good price.

I just got an email from him about the radials.

He is getting in a load of radial 37" MT's with 95-100% tread in about a week. 75.00 per tire.

Most companys started cutting down, or discontinuing the 16.5" tires back in about 2003-2004. The reason is, the 16.5" wheel has no safety bead inside and too many people were running these on everyday trucks and tires coming off of the wheels and causing serious crashes became too common. They are OK for off road rigs with true bead locks, but they are really not safe for and light duty DD where it's not legal to run bead locks on the street.

Those Hummer H-1 double beadlocks pictures are DOT approved. The 8 bolt ones can use bias ply tires and the 12 bolt ones can use either bias ply or radial tires.

These were my favorite 4x4 tire (regular, non 16.5" sizes), till they got discontinued :(

Sidewalls were thin, but a great tire otherwise (& I'm guessing the Hummer versions got better sidewalls than the civi's)

I might order 6 of them. I always liked them too. The 37's for a Hummer were 425.00 each new. I believe they have better sidewalls too.

Besides the mentioned H1 beadlocks... Hutchinson makes a DOT approved double beadlock that is eerily like the H1, but aluminum. Which makes sense since hutchinson made the H1 locks. At about $450 a rim, they aren't exactly a bargin. However, they make them in either 15" or 16" sizes. For some reason the H1 had to run 16.5" rims.

 

And to really make things fun... Non DOT-approved beadlocks are still legal. There is no law specifying that beadlocks aren't legal, nor anything stating you MUST run DOT approved wheels.

 

I want to run H1s because they're cheap. Unfortunatly, being limited to used tires or intercos kinda sucks. The used tires aren't a great deal for me - with shipping I could buy something perfectly new. I don't think interco makes anything that actually fits the bill for me.

 

I think I'm going to buy some stazworks... They have ones that aren't overly flashy, and the price is actually reasonably comparable to recentered H1s. And I can just get a 16" dealio and it'll clear my brakes fine.

In Ohio, tires, wheels, head lights all need to be DOT approved to be allowed on the road. Not that anyone pays any attention to it, though.

 

But if you get in a wreck and they find non DOT approved parts on your vehicle, whether they caused the wreck or not, they ticket you for operating an unsafe vehicle.

16.5s are a safety issue? WTH? They were used for YEARS.  Grew up with Ford pickups and livestock trailers that all had 16.5s. They were the industry standard for 3/4 ton and up pickups.  No safety issues. For God's sake, where do some of you come up with this information.  No "safety bead"?  They were still being used through the late 80s, early 90s, both decades having pretty much the same safety standards as we have today.  MAYBE some of you are confused with the fact that SPLIT rims were still in use in the 70s, even on pickups.  

Yes they were eventually phased out because auto manufacturers switched to 16s and 17s but they are still available by ordering.  Probably not going to find a dealer that keeps them in stock unless it's a specialty store carrying off road tires
