Tailshaft leakin

Recommended Posts

Alright, got alittle issue that's startin to get alittle costly and ugly around the house. I finished the AX-15 swap but now I have a little issue. The tailshaft is leaking wear the driveshaft slides into it. I've replaced the seal and it helped alittle but still leaks. At six dollars and something a bottle gear oil is startin to cost me and all the little spots are driving me and everybody else in the house nuts. I got the seal for a '94 XJ, as that is what the tranny came out of, but like I said it just slowed it down, not stoped it. My question is, would pressure in the tranny cause that? There's not a pressure vent/breather on the tranny and I don't think that the shifter has any kinda vent on it either. Am I missin something or am I gonna have to tear something out again?

Thanks yall,

-Cody

Ok, not meaning to dig up a old post but it's still doin it and startin to get worst. I've redone the seal a few times and nothing seems to help. I was told by someone that there is some sort of inner seal of some sort that if it fails then the tail shaft seal has no chance of holding back the fluid. The only other thing that I noticed with it is that when the slip yoke slides into the tailshaft it seems like it bottoms out on what looks like a metal ring, but didn't know if that means anything or could be causing my issues. Any help would be great, but I got a bad feelin that the tranny is gonna have to come out again, and of course I just moved and all I have is a gravel driveway.....yippie.. :ack: . Anyways, if anyone knows anything please let me know, $6 rear seals and $6 bottles of fluid adds up to as much as rent every month, not to mention fluid getting on the exhaust pipes smokes and reaks when I park or stuck in traffic.

-Thanks yall,

Well atleast the gravel driveway has solved the problem of the family complaing about the spots. If the slip yoke is bottoming out on a ring, maybe that is the inner seal and maybe the slip yoke has knocked it out of line from bottoming out on it. Just throwing out a suggestion. Is the front end of the slip yoke sliding out past the ring completely and then sliding back in past it? If so it may be getting caught on it now and then and knocked it out of line. :dunno:

How about the yoke itself ? A worn or nicked yoke will have a leak you won't be able to stop. Maybe try and replace the yoke, easy to do as if you were replacing a U-joint. :typing:

That's what I'm thinking that it is, the only thing is I went and got a new one that fit but it was long and bottoms out, I trimed it down and it fit but was a really snug fit, almost to the point of wouldn't turn. If I could just find a slip yoke that came from a 2wd AX-15 It would be great......but around here it's kinda hard to come by, and I don't have alot of extra money just sittin around. The slip yoke I was told to use was a Chevy Turbo 350 slip yoke, that's what I put in it but like I said it didn't want to turn by hand once it went into the tail shaft.

Well I do have a question that I just though about, will a AX-5 and an AX-15 slip yoke interchange? I just happened to remember that the XJ that I yanked the clutch setup and interior from was a 92-94 2wd and a 5spd. but I think that it's a 2.5 so if I'm thinkin right then it's an ax-5. If I can get it figured out then I know if it's worth my time to drive 25-30 mins to go the the yard and pull the yoke out of it.

Well good news, went to pull-a-part yesterday to pull a slip yoke from the XJ that I snatched alot of other stuff from. Well just like that perfect MJ I found the XJ was long gone, but found one near by with a perfect slip yoke, got it for pretty cheap and put it in the truck. So far so good, haven't really seen any leaks, but the truck has also been settin pretty much all weekend b/c I've had moms little XJ running arrons and what not. And yeah the old yoke had some issues goin on, I think that it may have been bent or something b/c since I swapped them my vibration problem went away.
