D70 over kill?

No, it's just about right. Hangs a little low, but you can shave it a bit with just an angle grinder. Or let the rocks do it for you.

 

 

 

I know a guy who runs one in his ZJ with 38s. Part of the reason he went with it is that it came stock with 4.56 gears.

Um, all of them? :dunno: :hmm: Be careful about the wheel bolt pattern. I seem to remember reading that some recent years were metric.

 

 

Not exactly! Certain years had a TTB Dana50 instead, I do believe. And newer ones don't have Dana axles anymore, I think... But you don't want them anyways, as said, the bolt pattern is weird.

 

 

The best* is the 77-79 HPD60's with kingpins; the pumpkin is also in an ideal place to not screw things up (pinion winds up where it would be with a HPD30).

Wheel pattern changed in 99 when they started calling them "Superduty". The f250 had a solid D50 in front until 2002. Then they started using a D60.

 

The TTB D50 was used in the F250 from i think 80-97. The D60 was used in the F350 from i think the 70's-97.

 

I would like to get a D60 front but the cheapest one i have found around was $1000.

what exactly is this "overkill" you speak of, ive never heard this term used for jeeps and axles... :brows:

 

D70 would be nice, but definately watch out for those wheel patterns and id go with Dirty's suggestion and shave it up a bit.

Also the D70 gears and lockers are pretty expensive. I am going to take my d60 and have the spindles bored out (150 at local machine shop) and order a set of 35 spline Yukon alloy shafts (80 bucks a side) and swap in a 35 spline locker, or weld up the 35 spline side gears I all ready have :D As far as it being overkill.... build it so it won't break, and you only build once

 

 

1000 is the going rate for a d60. If you get one out of a newer ford, remember it will be a ball joint d60 and uses expensive unit bearings... they say a king pin d60 is stronger, but either way you are light yrs ahead of the strength and reliabilty of a d30, and a d44
