BJA814
Got a call from a buddy on Friday night. He said he thought a U-joint let go. Here's what I found:
blusteve
Think JB Weld would work? What was he doing?
BJA814
He was driving on the highway :dunno: The front CV joint was trashed, and apparently someone tried towing him. Not sure what happened really. We just put some Black RTV on the pieces and are letting them dry right now. Just kidding.....I had a spare NP231 that we threw in. We never found the other half of the original case, although we did find a gear in the breakdown lane :D
brdhntr
wow. on the plus side, the internals look like they were pretty clean, you know, before it blew up. :D
Pete M
Was it in 4wd? Was the front driveshaft still attached to the front axle after the carnage?
JeepcoMJ
interested in parting with the output shaft, input shaft, and tail housing (with rubber boot?) housing? I could use them... maybe even the front yoke if you're not gonna use it. -Pat
BJA814
JeepcoMJ...replied to your PM Pete...The driveshaft was still connected to the axle...and the shaft from the t-case. I don't believe it was in 4wd at the time. But like I said, I just got a call saying "something went boom" haha.

TNT
Thats what axle bind on dry pavement causes when in 4wd... I have seen this 4 other times, all were in 4wd on pavement. :shake:
BJA814
The jeep was a 2000 TJ 2.5l ax-5 And not having experienced the carnage first hand, I can't really offer insight into exactly what happened. But the CV joint was trashed. Looks like it had been for a while. I was thinking that it may have caused a bind and split the case. The the chain let loose. The underside of the floor was trashed as well as the inside of the skid pan. The fuel line was crushed against the frame, luckily not split. The brake line and evap line were wrapped around the front driveshaft like a candy-cane. Here's a pic of the floor damage. You can see the brake line after we straigtened them to get them out of the way.
Pete M
The front driveshaft is constantly spinning in a TJ (no CAD). That kind of damage could have happened after the case blew, but before the Jeep came to a stop. My head hurts just thinking of those parts whipping around and around at 65mph under the Jeep. :ack:
