robfg67
I found a Dana 30 front axle with 4.10 gears. Would this bolt up in my MJ? If so, would it be best to use my brakes? Is there anything else I should be concerned with? Here is the CL ad: http://southcoast.craigslist.org/pts/1050702688.html One other question, would running 4.10 gears place additional stress on the 20 year old Peugeot BA-10? My stock gearing is 3.07.
offroader461
No...YJ wranglers are Leaf spring front axles...TJ, ZJ, XJ , MJ all share the same mounting style using coils....it can work but its way more work than its worth
robfg67
Thanks, I was not aware of that!
Eagle
Keep in mind that the 84-99 XJ and the 86-92 MJ used a high-pinion, "reverse rotation" Dana 30 in the front. The ZJ (Grand Cherokee), the TJ (Wranger, round headlights), and the 2000-2001 XJ used a low pinion, standard rotation D30 in front. The low pinion axle will bolt right in -- all the mounts are the same -- but it isn't as strong as the reverse rotation setup, and if you lift it runs into u-joint angles sooner because the pinion is below the axle centerline rather than above. The best candidates for new front axles are from late 90s XJs, with no vacuum disconnect and with the larger u-joints.

Eagle
i thought zj's were hp? I don't believe so ... but I'm willing to be corrected.
Pete M
Thus far, every ZJ I've seen has been low pinion. But I'm not all that up on ZJ specifics through all years.
redneck23ms
i haven't fooled with too many zj's either. just figured that since they were hp since all other dana 30's at that time were.
