feerocknok
SM465, I do believe. 7.0:1 1st gearish! Great find!
Pete M
Shift knob says L-1-2-3-R or something like that. Anyone know what the 452 means?
87manche
http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/sm465.htm can be mated to a 242. that low range might be awfully nice :)
Pete M
But the weight is NOT. Dang thing must weigh a ton and a half.
DirtyComanche
Yup, good find. There's one in the 1-ton at work, when that sucker's in L, it's like being in 4Lo. And it's got a low range besides... Oh, a 454 to boot. Damn I love that truck's drivetran.
DirtyComanche
And all that weight is beef. Throw a NP203 doubler and NP205 behind it and it's bulletproof.
feerocknok
That is the tranny to have. Trying to get one for my Yota. Gonna put it in the '88?

According to Novak's website: both. No, its not going into any of my trucks. I went to pick up some free 80's Vette rims from a local guy and he made me an offer I couldn't refuse. He called it a Muncie transmission but also said he wasn't sure so I figured I'd ask you guys. Now I know that it goes by many names. Dang is that thing heavy.

I had meant the 242 as in the 4.0 The 4.0 shares the same bellhousing pattern as AMC small block motors, so it's actually pretty easy to get a belhousing to mate different transmissions to it. creepinjeepin
I have one of those. I was thinking of doing the doubler NP205/203. I got a Dana 70 rear with it too for free. I don't know what to do with everything.
sinnaevd
build an army tank...everyone can use one of those...
creepinjeepin
Yeah that is what I was thinking. My father inlaw is a chevy fan and he has a mini junk yard behind his house. He has a couple 205's and 203's and 208's. I don't know how he got ahold of the 70 and some 9 inch rearend's but.. Anyone have any suggestions.. creepinjeepin
Yeah he does have a chevy frame that looks pretty nice. I just don't know if I want to put a wrangler body on it or something else.

pingpong
To do the 203/205 doubleris kinda on the expensive side... do you research. Also I am looking for a cheap NP203.... it seems everyone where I live wants an arm and leg for them. I have a NP435, and np205 sitting on the ground by the garage... I pulled it myself
DirtyComanche
A NP205 weighs what? 106Lbs? The 203/205 doubler is something you do only if you get the tcases for next to nothing. 203s are easy to find though. At least they are here...

The cost of T-Cases is the reason I'm trying to find a 4wd donor for my Toyota. I thought a doubler was just the price of the plate pretty much. Like $300 or something. Seems like that's all the Yota ones are, but maybe the NP ones are different.
DirtyComanche
It's a new output shaft from the 203 range box that is shorter, and is splined correctly to mate to the 205. And a big assed peice of plate. And some bearings for the 203 output shaft (I think). You could do it cheap and cut the 203 shaft down and respline it (if you know a place to get that done). But, then it's not induction hardened on the splines, so you just might tear 'em all off. Sure, you could get it induction hardened too, but unless you really know people it's cheaper to buy the kit at that point.
creepinjeepin
Yeah the plate to connect them is like 700. Thats the cheapest I found. Offroad design has a web site that has some info. I have a 4 wheel drive mag that has the whole write up on doing the combo. I guess I will be patient and see what happens.
pingpong
By the time you do a 203/205 doubler, unless you do some kind of lower gear ratio in the swap (more moeny) you would have been better off buying a Terra lowkit, but if you are dead set on a doubler.. look at Mad rooster kit.. I know there is another kinda one... on PBB, but can't think of the manufacturer
