pug Posted February 10, 2009 Author Posted February 10, 2009 Will I need to use the 4wd tie rods or will the 2wd drive work
Pete M Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 The steering parts should be interchangeable. As are the control arms if they are in better shape than yours. But the rear axle from that 98 XJ will need the leaf perches moved to the MJ spot.
Sir Sam Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 Will I need to use the 4wd tie rods or will the 2wd drive work IIRC the knuckles are the same, so they should work just fine. Though it would be worth it to replace 20 year old tie rods with new ones, so its kinda moot.

Woops, keeping me honest, since he didn't specify front or rear axle and the topic was 4wd conversion I assumed he meant front. But yes, if your going with a rear axle out of the same donor then you will need to weld spring perches on.
pug Posted February 10, 2009 Author Posted February 10, 2009 I do not have the transfercase and 4wd transmission installed yet. Will i be able to drive it with to diffrent gear ratios. In 2wd only
mvusse Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 Yes, as long as you're in 2wd (either with the transfer case in 2wd, or without a transfer case at all), gear ratio doesn't matter.
mjeff87 Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 you'll need to use the hubs, rotors and calipers as a complete set from either axle (preferably the '99 as the hubs most likely will have alot fewer miles on them). Mixing and matching those parts from old axles to new doesn't work very well as the hubs were redesigned as well as the rotor hats. Jeff
pug Posted February 10, 2009 Author Posted February 10, 2009 I got the whole axel wheel to wheel tie rod springs steering box for a 100. One last qeustion i hope is the pitman arms the same 2wd to 4wd. thanks
mvusse Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 Yes, all the steering and suspension parts are the same.
pug Posted February 11, 2009 Author Posted February 11, 2009 I picked up my axel finally and it also came with the steering box.(i guess that is what its called) but will that bolt up also from the 1990 2wd to the 1998 4wd
mvusse Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 What's wrong with your current steering box that you can't use it? Disconnect the pitman arms from the drag links, or from the steering boxes.
pug Posted February 11, 2009 Author Posted February 11, 2009 I noticed a lot of play in the steering, replaced tie rod ends and new trackbar and still a lot of play. Checked and everything seems to be tighten
mvusse Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 Have someone else move the steering back and forth while you watch everything up front from underneath. Out of 3 Jeeps I have dealt with personally, all three had an elongated (worn out) hole in the track bar bracket allowing the axle to shift sideways. New track bar does not solve it when the issue is with the bracket. But if the play is in the box, then I agree with replacing it.
