I removed the EGR valve last night to clean and noticed that the pintle was missing! Since the truck appears to run good with no signs of vacuum leaks is it necessary to have a functioning EGR valve?

Thanks

Since you don't have a location in your profile, I don't know if you live in an area that you are subject to emissions testing, but if not...then you can do away with it. There are kits made with a cover plate for the manifold, but I don't know off hand where to get them. I'm sure just a little Google searching will render you some answers on that

I live in Yukon Canada, no testing here. If i did use the cover plate I remember reading that poor gas mileage may occur and/or a hotter engine temperature.

Anyhow I just order one for the dealer for 160 bucks with transducer and gasket.... Just in case.

Thanks for the replies

It's always best to keep things as they are meant to be even though you can make changes in some cases without issue

The EGR on my 89 4.0 failed before I did the stroker swap. All I did was plug the vacuum line going to the EGR valve with a golf tee. I never had any problems after that.

That's what I would try first. It's easily reversible if something does indeed go wrong.
