jbhill
ok i don't know to much bout computers, but mine randomly shuts off like its overheating, but the fan on the motherboard and fan in the powersupply are working. the HD feels warm, but not oww that hot i got burned. it only seems to cut off when I'm viewing a site that has alot of flash or junk on it. andi have removed the side cover and it still does it. its a compaq presario 5000 from 2k1 lol. i know its not a memory problem I THINK cuz i dumped all the pictures/music useless programs. BLHTAZ
My old Compaq from about the same era and model developed similar issues about a year ago...turned out to be a mother board. It's not worth putting much effort or money in to an old computer like that so you may end up doing what I did and buying a new one. If you don't have an external hard drive, get one and back up all your stuff quick before you lose it. The external was a life saver for me and it makes life so much easier in setting up a new computer too.

Geonovast
Rip it apart, dust and crap likes to jam up the airways for the fan. You may also want to replace the thermal paste between the processor and heatsink.
jbhill
yea i cleaned it good when i first started having this problem, fixed it for a day or so then the problem restarted. would di electric grease work?
jbhill
well i put some dielectric grease on it today and blew the lil bit of dust off the heat sink. still shuts off. :wall:
Geonovast
Di electric grease is for helping in electrical connections. You need a thermal paste, which will help transfer the heat from processor to the heat sink. Another possibility is the heat sink is shot. Just like a radiator, they can eventually go bad and stop working as well as they should.
maddzz1
Does it give any message when it shuts down or when you start it back up?
jbhill
nope just randomly cuts off.just trying to get it to last till my parents can afford another one.
Geonovast
If you think it may be the harddrive, they do make fans that you can click onto the harddrive itself. I'm willing to bet the culprit is the thermal paste... Putting the di electric grease on it may have actually made it worse.
jbhill
yea it has gotten worse actually. can i get thermal paste at say office max/depot ok did some readin on google, i just put a skim coat of dielectric on the bottom of the heat sink, not knowing i just needed that square lol. the HD does get kinda hot tho.
