from tech: name that axle continued....

Here, whoever was complaining about pics, I pulled out my good one:

 

I was wrong! It looks like they just cut the shafts off... here's what I know - 16 spline axles, the date it was stamped is 11-24-71. I assume that it has 4:10 gearing, it took 8 full turns of the yoke to turn the gears once. It was FULL of gear oil, love that smell - and the bearings and all seem to move very well and no teeth are missing.

 

Here are some picks, someone please tell me what I have:

 

And it looks like this is stamped on the right side axle tube: 1 12 2A1 195 1 (the A could be a - or 4 or 5. But I think its A or 5 most likely.)

Also, how desirable of a D60 do I have?

 

For a free D60 should I be excited?

Definitely 4.10 gears. That's what the 41-10 stands for: 41 teeth on the ring gear, 10 on the pinion.

 

It IS a Dana 60. In the last picture, look on the bottom right of the housing. That 60 is the model number.

 

And I'm guessing they are 17 spline axles, not 16.

 

And yeah, they're nice big pictures. Glad I got 8mb/s. I would hate being the poor sapsucker with dialup trying to download them.

 

Anyway, are you sure they cut the shafts off? Being a FF axle, it is trivial to remove them, and much easier than cutting.

no I don't know that they are cut, I do know that they do not go into the gear area. I agree definitally a 60, says so in more than one spot. And I tried my best to count the slots where the teeth of the axle shaft would go and maybe I skipped one, wasnt very easy, all I know is that its not 30 or whatever. Better than my D35, I will find some shafts and put it under my truck

 

A good thing is, the spring perches are only a 1/2 inch off, so I might be able to slide it under with very little work.

That is a very old D60. I hate to tell you but it is a very usless axle. Parts for it are hard to come by and it is VERY expensive to build. If I am not mistaken it is out of a 69-72 F250 Ford.

 

I had a buddy a few years ago pick one up and it turned out to be crap. Thankfully he had a heavy foot and made the 4:10s work with his 36s!

How wide is it? I would be more worried about that then if the spring perches lined up

 

As for how desireable.. with 4.10s and if it had35 spline axles you could get about 150 for it :brows: Most of the time they go for less cause they are not 35 spline. With a lil work could be a nice axle. Change spider gears to a later 30 spline setup, and get a set of FF yukon shafts for 200 or so and call it good.

Ya, thats what I was thinking as well, spider gears and new shafts and your good to go.
