mj88
I'm tryin to find a 4l engine for my brother in law cherokee, and was wondering if a 92 4l cherokee engine will work in a 96 cherokee. if not any one know what will work in the 96.
james750
92 was a HO xj so that should work, computer systems may be different though.
mvusse
I'm pretty sure 92 was OBD-I, federal govenrment madates that all vehicles 96 and newer need to be OBD-II. So yeah, computer probably will be different, I'm guessing the engine itself is the same, but you may possibly need to swap some of the sender units over from the old one. I really know nothing specific about the HO, as my only experience is with the Renix (87 through 90).
mj88
will the auto trans from the 96 work in the 92 engine?
JeepcoMJ
yea, the 92 motor will work. you'll have to swap alot of things from the 96 motor over that you can you need 96 flywheel/fledplate distributor (for safe measure though 92 may work) throttle body and sensors coolant sensors oil pressure sending unit 02 sensors (not sure if this is 100% necessary swap) fuel rail and injectors (not 100% necessary, but a good idea) the most important thing I can tell you to swap is the flywheel/flexplate. we recently installed a 93 motor in a 95 xj after rebuilding the motor, and found that the flexplate was different and would not bolt up to the torque converter AFTER we installed the motor  so we had to take it out and swap out the flexplate :( which just cost us time. CypherWulf
additionally, depending on emmisions laws, you might be prohibbited from taking an engine and installing it in a vehicle newer than the engine
FxRacing282
i believe in new hamoshire if you have an OBD-II controlled emissions system and you put a motor in that was born before 96 then you don't have to apply to the OBD-II laws. not sure about anywhere else
