okay, after a discussion of our finances, or lack thereof, the question came up, if I do go to a JY for my brake lines, will a newer Cherokee use the same ones? I'm thinking that a newer XJ might have some lines in decent shape, but I need to know how new would be too new. Additionally, can someone please run me through the procedure for removing the brakelines, ie what tools I'll need, things to look out for etc. That would be much appreciated. Also, in revewing the inventory of the local JY, they have a 89 Manche out there, I'll make sure to take lots of pics. (I might have my donor truck)

put me down for one as well as soon as they come in, I'll send some $$ when they're ready (Might as well get some bussiness cards too)

is it me or does it look like there was a fire in the engine compartment?

or maybe even work on our trucks! or spend time with the family depending on your current wife aggro level

I'd say that you need to tell your recruiter that if you're going to be rolling around with a navy recruiting phone # on your truck, that he should get the Navy to pay for the paint job

Nice rifle!

After spending 6 years as an infantry/cavalry medic, I've switched to being an Eye Specialist. I'm prepping for a deployment next summer to Iraq (My third). Grats on your choice to serve the country, even if it is with the Navy!

additionally, depending on emmisions laws, you might be prohibbited from taking an engine and installing it in a vehicle newer than the engine

He's not the only one who had the 2.8 inflicted on him! Thanks for the info, It'll come in usefull when I come up with the money and time to upgrade mine

well, I have a friend who was an army mechanic before he reclassed to HVAC, so hopefully he has experience with bending, flaring and installing brake lines. TBH, I don't know all that much about the complete workings of a brake system, like I've said, the mantra was always "if you can't do it with a gerber and a hammer, get a mechanic" (you'd be supprised what you can fix on a HMMWV with those two tools tho) I'm not looking forward to sinking too much money into tools that I wouldn't use more than once tho, I might look into using the Auto craft shop on post (Full maintainance bay, lift and tools, just have to sign a waiver and pay an hourly rent) I'll talk over the project with him, but something has to happen soon, I really don't like the brakes the way they are, but I don't have a choice, as I have to leave my wife with a car during the day. Hopefully my friend can help me understand more about what I'm getting myself into.

yah, it's the one running from the block out to the back of the chassis, thanks for the link, I'll study it carefully.

so, I was looking at my brake system to see why I don't have any hydraulic pressure, and I found the leak, the metal brake line going to the left rear wheel has rusted out, and needs to be replaced. The haynes manual has some general information, but nothing specefic. As I've never done this job before, I'd appreciate any tips you guys have. In addition, I need to know how long to expect this job to take, IE weekend job or something I can do after work during the week.

colorado mjs trail run
CypherWulf replied to james750's topic in Adventure Planning / Regional Groups
Wish I could make it, I'd love to get my jeep dirty :driving: That and I'd love to help out to keep a great trail open. On another note, anyone know a good place for a person with some off road experience (HMMWV ambulance in KY and Iraq), but a mostly stock Manche could have some fun in the Colorado Springs area? -
Don't forget the baling wire and staple gun :brows: Nah, it's not bad enough to pull out the heavy equipment!

I want your bucket seats! Great find, welcome to the club!

TBH I probably won't do much in the way of modifing the body, at least not for a long while (I want to get it to the point where I don't have to worry about accelerating from 20-60 without waiting for my engine to decide weather or not it really wants to do it first), but little things like this that would be relativley cheap and easy and make my ride more comfortable are always good

good to hear that I'm not stuck with fixed glass forever, thanks.

What to do if your hood release cable breaks

OIC, good to know there's at least one thing about my 86 that is nicer to have than the later models! -

Maybe the '86 is just wierd, but I didn't have to go through nearly all this much today when it happened to me, I just unscrewed the grille, and reached up and pushed the (single) latch to the side the same way that the cable would have done, worked like a charm. -
Here it is. From what I've read, none of the '86 'manches had vent windows.
-
I'm wondering if there's any way to easily/cheaply convert the triangular front window panels to old style vent windows. I'm sure you remember the ones that pivoted in the middle, and had a little latch that caught on the guide rail for the bigger window? I'm just wondering if it has been done, as it would be nice to be able to just get a little fresh air inside the truck without having to roll down the main windows. ::Edit::: found a pic for refrence (83 jetta)

Thanks for all your welcoming coments, TBH I haven't really done much research on what I should replace the (stolen term) "anemic" 2.8 with, though if there's a straight bolt in replacement available, I'll probably go with that, as the only real experience I have with engines/mechanic work is keeping my ambulance running during my life as a medic. I've done an oil change and a xmission fluid change, and that seems to have helped. apparantly the PO didn't pay too much attention to it, as I ended up replacing about 1.5 qts of oil with the appropriate 4.5 qts, I expect to start finding leaks tommorrow. As for my Tail lights, from what I can tell, they are stock+spraypaint, just like the rest of the truck.

Would it be possible to do a cutout window sticker with the CC logo instead of just the text? That would look great on the rear window methinks

So, a little back story, I've really wanted a Jeep since I was 10, I have had dreams of finding an old CJ or MJ to fix up, well, it finally happened, I found this old girl on Craigslist, and the timing was perfect. It drives well enough right now, as well as can be expected for a truck of this age. I'm starting with the repairs that will make it a more comfortable daily driver, though someday it will be the trail runner of my dreams. Right now it has the 2.8 V6 with a 3 speed automatic in it, certianly less than ideal, after I get back from Iraq I plan on finding someone who can help/teach me to drop in something a little beefier, I'm thinking the 4.0 straight 6, and a 4 speed automatic.
