Bumpers

Recommended Posts

Has anyone ever made a front or rear bumper???? I am having trouble trying to figure on how to make the front mounts on the frame? I havent really looked at it to close but i do know that i want it to take a beating and not damage anything. I already have some channel i am going to use with a few minor changes but the mounts are what is concerning me. Any past experiences would be great even if you bought one i would like to know how it mounts and how far it goes back on the frame also if it is welded or bolts. Thanks for any input.

Use flat bar down the side of the frame rails. Use the same holes that the steering box bolts to on the drivers side, and use as many holes as possible on the passenger side.

Take a look at Rigidco.com Terry has the best mounting system out there in my opinion. His stuff is pure beef. His lead time now is 4-6 months though

it needs to tie into the frame past the factory 6 bolts. Tieing in the steering box bolts is popular. See if you can't find some pictures of Cherokee front bumper mounting plates, they're the same up front.

Out back it's pretty simple since you have real frame rails to tie into.

My rear bumper uses 8 bolts to the frame.

Here's a pic of stock tow hook brackets for reference, so you can see how they tie into the framerails (there are two bracket pieces not shown that also are used). The stock bumper bolts to the front of the brackets. I've got a hella stout rear bumper that pingpong made waiting to go on the back of mine (very soon), but I don't have pics of it right here....I'll snap some tonight and post them. Pat used the stock mounting brackets in the design.....it'll give you a good idea.

Anyways, here's the brackets for the front:

I have decided on the rear after a few glances but the front is still in planning. I am thankful for the quick replys and will let you know what i decide. Also what material should i use?? Do you think Channel would make it stronger and work better than flat because i have 3" that i can use for th brackets. I have built alot of stuf and fabricated way more than i ever thoiught i would on my MJ but i just want to make sure my bumper could have a chain hooked to it and pull me out IF i need it to. :D I just needed some more experienced peoples opinions. Thanks again

I would use the 3" channel and use a 2 1/2 or 2 x 5 ....3/16 wall tubing for the bumper. You could even hang a couple d-rings on the rear face for when you need to pull someone out. Being in the truck body manufacturing industry as i am does have a few advantages :brows:

I strongly suggest, at least 3/16, or 1/4 for any part of the bumper. Anything less then that, the weld would be stronger then host material making it easy to break off.

The bumper that Jeff has of mine, was made using 2x4x1/4 "C" Channel, as well as 2x4x1/4 wall tubing. It weighs a ton, but if you watch any of the video of me bashing on it, you will realize why I built it so tuff.

Also what kinda welding equipemtn do you have? It makes a difference on what I would choose to build, and what I wouldnt consider building. Tow points and bumpers take a lot of abuse, and the need for good welds, and quality materials are important.

when I do my bumpers, I was going to build the bracing out of 1 inch thick alumunum (or 1/2 inch thick c channel aluminum) and the bumper out of 1/4 thich sqauare aluminum probably 4 inch my 3 inch.

Bad idea?

I have access to multiple styles of welder and tools so that will not be an issue. I even have a 2x5x1/4" piece of channel to do the bumper with and several pieces of 3" channel and some tubing that i plan to make a stinger with due to a past near disaster. I think all of this together will make a good front bumper and my rear is already mocked up using 2 pieces of 3" channel thats a 1/4" thick and a skin to cover it made out of 1/8" think 3X6" angle. The only concern i have now is with the front as far as putting all the pieces i have together correctly. Thanks for all the great inputs to help me with my decission.

Anybody have a pic of the "other" brackets. I bought some brackets and 'hooks just like the picture, without the other brackets, guess I'll fab some. Thanks.

I've since gotten them, but don't have a pic handy. They are two L shaped brackets that attach to the front of the bracket and the other end bolts to the chassis sheet metal below the radiator opening.

edit....here's a real good shot of them in this thread:
