rejeep
Quick question.. I'm about to two in 2 hrs. I am towing a 95 cherokee 5pd 4wd with a tow dolly. I have heard different things.. 1)DS out 2)put it in high gear so the tcase oils 3)put it in neutral obviously no. 1 is the best, but aside from oil leaking all over the seller driveway and its raining.. are the other two viable options? DirtyComanche
N on Tcase, N on trans. If the rear DS is spinning, the oil pump in the tcase will spin. The trans won't spin though. I don't know why the manual says you're supposed to pull the DS. Makes no sense to me.
Bounty Hunter
All jeep owner's manuals of vehicles with the 231 say to not tow with 1 end up as if using a dolly. If all 4 wheels are on the ground, the tranny is in park (auto) or 1st (manual) and transfer case in neutral. I've always unbolted the rear driveshaft and hung it from the undercarriage so the slipyoke didn't fall out spilling t-case fluid. Better safe than sorry. Eagle
I'm not sure what year it changed, but on older Jeeps the neutral position of the transfer case disengaged the transfer case from the engine and tranny, but left the front and rear driveshafts connected and spinning together. This is fine for flat towing, but obviously with a tow dolly you can't have the front wheels turning. I read somewhere that this was corrected in recent years, but I don't know if it was done by 1995. To be safe, pull the rear driveshaft.
jage
My 2000 TJ manual says put Tranny in gear (manual) and Tcase in N.
Cooter
Ditto on Eagle's reply- the YJ changed in '93/94 to a true neutral, but not sure on the XJ. If it does have a true neutral, then T-case in N, tranny in first- friction will still turn the tranny in neutral, and the AX15 doesn't oil well in neutral from what I have gathered. If it doesn't have a true neutral, same as above but drop the Front driveshaft- much less messy, and does the same thing as far as the front axle is concerend. Bounty Hunter
Ditto on Eagle's reply- the YJ changed in '93/94 to a true neutral, but not sure on the XJ. What changed? I've had the 231's apart on most all years and there's no mechanical difference I can think of that would cause this.
Cooter
Pretty sure it is the range fork or sector- some of the 2wd Low kits are supposed to give a true neutral, and those are the only pieces replaced in the kit.
