rejeep Posted May 25, 2006 Posted May 25, 2006 is there any way to convert a older vacume style 231 to a electric style 231? can't the electronics just swap over?
rejeep Posted May 25, 2006 Author Posted May 25, 2006 the older AMC 231 are different than the 231 J correct? Whats the differences and can they be corrected?
onetallmj Posted May 25, 2006 Posted May 25, 2006 The NP231 that comes in the Comanche is shifted with a linkage. The only thing vacuum on it a switch(?) that sends a signal to the vacuum disconnect on the front axle and the light on the dash. If you want to you can removed all the vacuum stuff and stuff some washers in the axle and not worry about it. did that make sense?
Oizarod115 Posted May 25, 2006 Posted May 25, 2006 are you referring to the actual shifting of the t-case? or (more likely) the engagement of the front axle. cause the axle is engaged by vacuum and the later styles are just always engaged.
rejeep Posted May 25, 2006 Author Posted May 25, 2006 to be completely honest I'm confused myself... I sold a Tcase to somebody with a 93xj The tcase was out of 88XJ He came back and told me it won't work because his is electronic and the 88 case was vacume... my question was what exactly are the vacume controlls if any on an early model 231 and what are the electronic connections.... I know the VSS is electric or manual, but that can be changed... are there any other ones that would prevent him from using this case in his 93?
pingpong Posted May 25, 2006 Posted May 25, 2006 NOPE. The vacum on the tailshaft housing needs to be changed over or just plugged. won't make a difference if the t-case works or not. The shifting is still done by the t-case shifter.

Bounty Hunter Posted May 25, 2006 Posted May 25, 2006 Likely the spline count on the input shaft won't match between those two transfer cases. I've been able to interchange nearly all parts on every 231J I've worked on. Jeep used the NP207 in AMC's before the 231J was introduced.
Bounty Hunter Posted May 25, 2006 Posted May 25, 2006 Novak site says the AW4 was 21spline up until '90, then '91+ is 23spline.
pingpong Posted May 26, 2006 Posted May 26, 2006 What bounty hunter posted is 100% correct. At least to my scientific research. Pulling my crap apart and doing my own counting
