slave cylinder external conversion
35 Dollars replied to 88mj34tsl's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Here's a writeup a guy did about converting to am external slave. http://www.bc4x4.com/faqs/yj.cfm?cat=6&faqid=98 Quadratec sells what looks like a metal one for a reasonable price... Scratch that... you want the one in the picture link. http://www.quadratec.com/jeep-replacement-parts/jeep-clutch/yj-clutch.php Ron -

Instrument Cluster issues
35 Dollars replied to 35 Dollars's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I suspected that the cluster should be from the 90, but I've not gotten any confirmation on it. I know ECM is OBD, so I wasn't sure about the gauge cluster. The donor is long gone, and was the type that only had dummy lights. I have a line on a cluster not too far from here. I may just go get it. -
Instrument Cluster issues
35 Dollars replied to 35 Dollars's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Gauges are from the 86. The wiring harness is completely from the 1990. Went through hell making sure the connections from the two halves of the bulkhead connector matched. View here: http://comancheclub.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=36244 I'm of the mind that maybe the cluster has blown it's top. Ron -
Okay, so I transplanted a '90 XJ EFI 4.0L into my '86 MJ, and the instrument cluster doesn't work. So, I replaced the senders for the temp gauge, and the oil pressure gauge, and they now work. What about the voltmeter, the tachometer, and the fuel gauge? Are there senders in the alternator, and for the tachometer? What are the chances the instrument cluster has gone bad? Any of you gurus have an idea about this?

Well... here they are! Easy enough to put in, and they seem to have made a difference. It's been a long time since I put these in my Oldsmobile. Note to anyone who does this: be sure to use the largest drill you have (3/8", or so) and drill out all of the corners. I didn't on the last one, and have a small opening at one of the corners. Whoops! Ron -
The best junk yard EFI fuel pump money can buy would be from a 1997-2000 ford explorer - it's a puller/pusher style: pulls from the tank, then pushes to the engine with up to 33psi or something like that.

Just saw a bench seat in an MJ on Tuesday... Check out these guys: http://www.montanaoverland.com. Chad and George run the place, really nice fellers. They ship all over the world; had a shipment going to New Zealand when I was there.

What about this one: 5. XJ '97+ doors onto older cherokees = one piece windows and better mirrors? The one thing I hate about the MJ are the side mirrors. Will this work on our MJ's?

Interior Bulkhead Connector Diagram
35 Dollars replied to 35 Dollars's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
That book was awesome! Got it all figured out. Just to let you gentlemen know: the bulkhead connector of the XJ and the MJ are nearly identical give or take the rear window wiper/washer thingy. and one or two others. The only thing that I think is wrong is that I have to replace the instrument cluster of the V6 with the one from the EFI I6 Cherokee. If any of you fellas happen to have a spare I'm in the market for it. Ron -

I'm glad that I'm not crazy about the heat generated under the hood. A lot of good ideas out there, thanks fellas. I'm gonna install the ones from the k-car then, and see if that can help it a bit. -

I guess you can't really see them well above. They're not for sale, you can have them for the shipping cost. Here's the pair I'm attempting to give away. They're gray in color, and one has a little damage to it, but not much. -
I find that WD40 also gets really sticky over time. It may work at first, but it becomes a glue later on. You may have lost a ground on your alternator, too. I had that happen on my LT1, and it really messed with the charging system - fortunately everything was new and it didn't hurt anything.

I fixed the problem they mentioned about the rainwater dripping down onto the engine by buying a couple of baking pans from WalMart, and affixing them to the bottom... and they're Teflon coated to boot! I built a strapping system out of aluminum that really clamped them to the hood. Below. I just so happen to have an extra set of the louvers if anyone is interested in them - just pay shipping... One of them is a little beat up, but can be easily fixed up. -
I've noticed a lot of under hood heat coming from the 4.0L transplant in 35 Dollars, and I was considering installing these: I had them in my Oldsmobile station wagon (Moby) after the installation of a '94 Z28 LT1, and noticed the same thing on it. They're from a K-Car with the turbo, and I built pans to go underneath them to direct water away from the engine. They really worked wonders on Moby to reduce heat - I'm wondering what you guys think. Yes or No? Other ideas?

This is the other thing I was talking about with regard to the 8.8, welding the tubes: http://www.4x4wire.com/jeep/tech/axle/ford8_8/ First hand experience from someone that has paid the price?: PRICELESS! -

Joe? What kind of wheeling do you do that you need to put 40" tires on your truck? Or are you going for the "LOOKS"... I'm still under the impression that if a D60 can handle 40"ers, so can an 8.8, 32-spline - look at the MOT numbers - they're just too close and you'll get more ground clearance with the 8.8. Well... I'll retract what I said above - this guy seems to know more about it than I: -

High Pinion 44's are hard to come by, and many people that know what they are want bank for them. I don't understand what you mean by "...which IMO would be a bad axle for 40" tires." People put 35's on D30's and 35C's (riskier) they still handle it with aplomb. I've got them both sitting right outside my garage door, and trust me the 8.8 is a lot larger shaft than the 44. Few people have ever broken the C-clips of an 8.8 unless they were too heavy on a really powerful or torquey V8 - even my local Truck Parts store took them off their shelves because they weren't being bought. -
97-01 cherokee buckets opinions
35 Dollars replied to ratrapp's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If you still have the MJ buckets, just take them to an upholsterer and have them redone. I have a lady that lives down the road from me that does that kind of work in her spare time - see if there is someone like that near you. Go into a quilt, or sundries shop and ask around - look at the bulletin boards, website, etc. For what it's worth. If you don't have them, contact: Scotty's Jeep 14349 Whittram Ave, Fontana Ca 92335 Phone: (909) 829-4823 Fax: (909) 829-7667 or http://www.montanaoverland.com/index.htm -
88 MJ Seat options
35 Dollars replied to 88SGTSlaughter's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Converting seat bracketry is a sketchy deal - I have experience with my Chevy pickup (I put a Dodge bench seat in it and had to make special brackets for the front). It also raised the seat up about 3 inches and made it difficult to get my legs under the steering wheel. Go with stock if you can find them.
