Headlights on with doors open ... no chime?
UNL1MTD replied to UNL1MTD's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
ok so I was monkeying around under there last night and when I pulled back the kick panel a red missile like plastic thing fell out. I have to assume this is from a GIjoe of the previous owner, but I figured I would ask anyway. Is there anything under the dash on the driver's side that is in anyway shape or form close to a small red plastic missile roughly 3"s long and a 1/4" in diameter at its thickest spot? -

ok so I pulled some other light blue box out of the parts MJ, i'll put that back and take a gander for this. But I'm figuring both are black because nothing else was light blue underneath either that I can recall. Thanks for the pic, thats a big help. -

Well I went to the '89 parts truck and sure enough next to the fuse box I found a light blue relay looking thingy. Pulled it and went to the '87 project truck. Its one was white, thought it was wierd and pulled it. Ended up only having three pins and the blue one wouldn't fit obviously. Am I trying to swap the wrong one? I'll have to take the kick panel off and look harder I guess. -

haha, yea, but normally I run my lights on the way to work when the sun is coming up and by the time I'm here its all bright, which makes the factory visual warning less than useful. :D -

Thanks for the info. I'll have to add list to my yard list. -
Now I know with my fancy '05 wrangler that if I open the door with my headlights on the jeep will sit there and chime at me until I either shut the door or turn out the lights. On my Comanche its never done anything, so I just figured it was the door switches. Well I took them out and cleaned them really good. Put everything back in and now I get the chime/buzz when the key is in the ignition and the door is open, but still nothing on the headlights. Is this normal or should I be checking up on some wire? Reason I'm concerned is because I killed the battery on Friday after leaving my headlights on. Still no interior lights either, figuring the housing and bulbs must be bad since I got power up to it. Confirmed it with a meter.

Figured I would wash the MJ since its up and running now ... the SporTruck vinyl decal came off way too easy. I guess I would be up for a Sportruck decal if it ever happens.

so no bumper or what? just wanting to make the slots extra long and lay the fogs flush? Might be cool. If you got the parts and time, why not?

i knew it, I've seen so many flop and roll right there. My LJ is way too pretty to take it on anything higher than the lowests of blacks there. That place is a place, wish I could go this weekend. We'll have to link up there for one of their rides.

So i lucked out, just no bulb. Without knowing what it was suppose to look like I was clueless. Thanks again for the pic and part number, my glove box will be all kinds of bright next time I open it.
-
Thanks for the pic, it looks like I lack the needed switch and socket. My MJ is optionless, so I guess I'll need to hit the yard to make this happen. Is this part common to XJs?
-
Makes sense, does the bulb plug right into the grey connector? Just to be 100% here cause I feel like I'm completely blonde, there should be a bulb in this and when the glove box opens it should illuminate?
-
you know what size or PN is for that bulb by chance?
-
looks pretty much identical, i think my plastic might be dark grey. I got an '87 and an '89 both have the connector but nothing else.
-
What is the deal with the connector in the glove box next to the latch with two wires going to it? I searched a bit, but couldn't find anything out about it. I'm guessing its for a light, but really I'm clueless. edit- stole this picture from another thread

Is that Crozet? The rocks look like Crozet's rocks. I agree with the majority that bolt on is the way to go.

summer badlands meet? now official!

If I know far enough in advance, I can make it provided I don't have another commitment. My parents live out in Indy, so I can make this my yearly drive out and add in some wheeling. I will bring my LJ though since its ready to go for anything and the MJ is 2wd. Is that ok? :D -

The 2wd leafs? Yea sure they are for sale as is the rest of the truck. If you're local you can come over and snag them for cheap. Shoot me a pm. -

I tried to make it happen last week and the stars weren't aligned. Going to have to get the grinder and cut off wheel out for taking the 4wd front out of the parts jeep. It'll happen, just need that magical free weekend. -

Its a 2wd  But the plan is still to convert it when cash is more plentiful. I have a lot going on in the next 2 months, so I figured that I wouldn't rush the conversion and just take the time to build up funds and parts. Probably start the grunt work of the conversion in July. Currently all I have is the front axle in my possession, need to grab tcase, trans, driveshafts, linkages, and whatever else. It'll be used though, probably split DD duties with it and the LJ. Make it a dump runner and wood hauler. I am figuring I can carry 1000 lbs in the back of it pretty easy. I am going to get a set of 31 MTs to throw on it here soon, the gearing is too deep to run at 65 comfortably. I got about 200 dollars left in the budget, so that should come close to scoring me a set of tires. I'll be a complete poser ... tow hooks, mud tires and 2wd! -

The new stance, its a slight difference. On flat ground with nothing in the bed its clear the 4wd springs have about 2 inches more arch to them. I think I got about 2ish inches or less out of the front. The front link living dangerously close to the coil. The rear and suspension. You can also see my Willy Wonka brake hardline on the left. The Windshield. No inspecion ... yet. The shifter, I think it looks money. Except for no Tcase lever ... thats a bummer. -

Took some pics of me and a friend installing the new rear and updating the 20 yr old front suspension. The sad 2wd front axle ready for coils. My newish D35 coming out of the parts truck I almost creamed my roommates Galant. Boy would that have sucked. We didn't have a lot of space to work with so we ended up picking up the axles and moving them in the air rather than rolling. I gotta get some after pics now. -

After a week of fighting drum brakes I finally won. ended up replacing every component of the rear drums on both sides and a bunch of hardlines. Parking brake is working great. With the 2.5L D35 gearing and 235/75/r15s on it as it is the speedo is way off. I was on the higway and I was reading 75mph but getting passed on a 55mph road, so I was probably doing 60ish. I will need to address this soon, in my TJ the speedo is a gear in the Tcase. With this being a 2wd truck, I'm guessing its in the transmission somewhere, can anyone point me in the right direction? I also got my shift boot and shift knob installed earlier this week which has cleaned up the look of the interior a bit. I also mounted up the sway bar and links, the links are pretty short and are really close to the coils. I have some spare TJ sway bar links, which are 3 inches longer, so they might be too long, but I'm going to give them a whirl. I got my new windshield too, Safelite came through and I got it installed in the driveway in 20 minutes for 148. Not to mention the guy came when he said he was going to come, complete opposite of the cable guy. I didn't get her in for inspection today because I finished up late helping my buddy install a rack onto his TJ, but I'm glad I did, the turn signal switch became very loose on my extended test drive today and now is tempermental about working correctly. It seems like its mount is loose, something to do tomorrow I suppose. The truck feels so smooth around 45 then the tires get the best of it and it shakes a little. All in all, I'm digging this MJ. -
I'm not trying to talk you into anything, but you stated the real reason..."I should cause I'm in there" wow, I got my @$$ handed to me last night as I was finishing up and the brakes on the driver's side didn't work. Everything was brand new except the wheel cylinder. Yup thats right, had to take it apart again. Didn't get lucky on the hardline this time. Got my parts today at Napa (3 dollars cheaper than Advanced Auto) and got the MJ's rear brakes working top notch. Parking brake works soooo good now. Anyways I wanted to give a big thanks to those posting in this thread  and no doubt in my mind if I ever have to do drum brakes again on an axle thats been sitting ... everything gets replace on the first go at it. I got a new skill though, I can take apart a drum in 5 minutes or less and put it back together in just under 10.
