87 MJ 4.0 auto running issues...loose dizzy? FIXED
JeepcoMJ replied to JeepcoMJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
DONE thanks everyone...I advanced the distributor by one tooth, and MAN does she run like a CHAMP! -
yes, but some people are what I title "Dee Dee Dee's"
-
Call me crazy but I thought I read he bought the new fenders as well. I could of sworn I saw him post pics of them... nope, you have to order 20+ fenders in order to get them...and he didn't need 20 fenders, even with the group buy. he got all four flares though :D i'm watching this closely...got a winter project... :brows:
-
you have to cut the old fenders to allow for the wrap-around headlights to fit in... and, remember you have 4 bolts on top of the upper radiator support as well

87 MJ 4.0 auto running issues...loose dizzy? FIXED

well, tightening it down in multiple locations (it spins a bit...) didn't fix the problem...although I can now rev to 2000 RPM instead... when I remove the vacuum hose from the fuel pressure regulator, it does nothing. -
you have a longbed or a shortbed?
-
do you have a longbed? if so, then yes just get a longbed 4wd driveshaft from a longbed which has the same motor as you are putting in. also, a 2wd shortbed rear driveshaft may work in the back of a 4wd longbed...but there are many variables there...I'm using a 2wd shortbed 4.0 auto dana 44 equipped rear shaft in my lwb 2.8 4x4 5 speed which now has a dana 44...no problems as of yet.

Questions about buying a rebuilt engine.

screwdriver into the flat part. i remove the cap, and twist and pull -
well, being on the recieving end of TWO accidents, one from a kid and one from a senior citizen (or close to it), I'm of the EXACT OPPOSITE opinion. the first time, the kids insurance refused to pay out the damage cost...and gave me half the value of the damage. second time (about a week after I fixed the dent in the 3800), they blamed it on me. then filed a claim AGAINST my insurance. I got the other guy a failure to yield ticket and yet they still fight...i don't like people who hit my vehicle, and literally every time that I get hit, I willcall the police. I don't care if it's $20 in damage, or $5000 in damage...if it's their fault, they can pay, and it needs to be reported. cause otherwise, you can't trust them to be honest and pay. I expect that if something is my fault, I get the same treatment.

air horns...always a good idea. my dad's buddy put one in his 2003 yamaha RX1 snowmobile with a foot button...scares the crap outta the people in front of him. gonna be installing one in both of my trucks too actually.
-
i assumed he knows about the transmission issues since he said he'd just buy a parts xj and swap it all over. only thing you should need made would be the rear driveshaft.
-
is your 4 cylinder an 87 and/or newer? if so, everything will bolt in. mid-87+ 4 cylinders use 4.0 radiator supports with an adapter for the 4 cylinder radiator...so, if you want to do the swap, you just need the interior and engine bay wiring harness, and all engine bay accessories including frame-side motor mounts. you will also need to swap out your fuel pump (the xj one can be put on the MJ sender) and perhaps the upper fuel lines

87 MJ 4.0 auto running issues...loose dizzy? FIXED

haven't had the time lol. I'll do all that tomorrow, and probably install a "new" distributor and re-time it to TDC on number one to be sure. just haven't had the time, and only just noticed this the other day...when it did run (a fusible wire broke so i've got to put a new fusible in) -
ok, I've got a 1987 jeep comanche i picked up a while ago and I need it done next weekend...this includes lifted, new brake hose, new rear line, bypass MJ prop valve, install interior, SOA rear, and 4wd swap. it doesn't run right. idles great. sputters at accel. won't accel past 1700 RPM without sputtering/coughing but it doesn't die out (just backfires like a mofo) so far I've replaced the fuel filter, put in premium gas, replaced the throttle body and it's sensors, plus MAP sensors, and CPS. none of this has helped. removing the vac. line from the fuel rail doesn't really do much. but, looking at it running the other day, i noticed the distributor bouncing around. (wobbles slightly). when the truck is off, I can turn it about 1/8" and wobble it back and forth. ...now i KNOW this has to do with my running issues, but does anyone know the symptoms that problems would cause? I haven't replaced the dizzy yet cause of the problems with the 3800 this weekend, but just wondering what everyone thinks of this issue.

Questions about buying a rebuilt engine.
JeepcoMJ replied to mfpdm's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
yep, remove the dizzy, take a flathead screwdriver and chop the handle off and put it in a drill. fill engine with about half the oil required from factory, and spin the dizzy rotor with the screwdriver tip. -
pics of the damage from the tire (yes, the dent is from the other accident...) GAH! :headpop:  the driveshaft, which was 1" too short before, is now around 3" too long! :hateputers: W00T :brows:  8) dana 44 installed i was going to have the driveshaft cut down tomorrow. BUT put the dana 35 under the 87 I yanked the 44 out of so i can move it, and found out the driveshaft for it was 3" too short :headpop: but... :brows: got to thinking, could I swap the shafts? YES. the shorter one is from the swb 4.0 2wd auto MJ equipped with dana 44, the black one is from the 3800 (2.8 5 speed 4wd longbed MJ equipped dana 35) now off to rebuild the "new" shaft...
-
nope, i got it slowed down enough beforehand the drop to the ground wrecked the backing plate, brakes, and brake drum. so, the sensible route is to just upgrade to a LSD MJ 44 rear with matching 3.55 gears, since i'm not gonna spend $$$ on an axle that i'll just break anyways
-
aaaand the rear left tire fell off. :headpop: the rim was bent in the accident I'm betting, and even though I retorqued all of the wheels, apparently it's wobble (there was a bit of a wobble) probably loosened the rim. anyways, all the brakes and axleshaft on that side are wrecked, so time for the dana 44 rear... moving on to axle number 5...
-
yep, late 80's/early 90's with the 2.5 litre 4 cylinder
-
yes. good luck finding one...i've been trying for awhile, but they're all out of my price range, or hard to find, or the good deals don't last long.
