...or does this mj have an extra frame underneath it? Link: http://springfield.craigslist.org/cto/3764458343.html It says it has a dodge 318 in it...maybe they stuck it on a dakota frame...?

Nah, put it in the MJ, it gets cool points!

Out in UT, its 16 hour shifts, 2 weeks on, 2 off, rig hands starting at $28/hr. Seems worth it to me?
-
plus ive got a truck ;) I'm thinking that if i go for 2 months, i can buy a good truck while I'm there, make sure its good to go, work the second month just to have some more $$ saved up, and figure the rest out from there. have 2 places in denver i can crash if necessary. Sounding more and more like plan

Honestly, with a little bit of ingenuity, i think you could make any two barrel fit. My dad has a motorcraft 2 barrel off of his old dodge 318, and I'm working on making an adapter plate to bolt it to the tbi intake that was on the s10 engine before i swapped it. I'll let you know how it goes..but for ready-to-go aftermarket, the 2se is all i know of...

Was talking to a family friend who went to the dakotas, the problem there is that because theres a huge demand for workers, prices for everything skyrocket. He was paying close to $2000/month for a small apartment. I am seriously considering this though, work just got slow again at the shop, and at the capstar rig in UT, they house and feed you. Work schedule is 16 hour days, 14 days on, 14 off. I think it would be good experience...and two weeks net pay is more than ive made the past 4 months...Biggest issue is getting out there. KC to Denver isnt too bad, its denver to Ft. Duchesne that may be a problem without a car

Thing is i have a good job, working in a structural steel shop, been here 9 months now. Only reason i asked about it is because I'm always up for new experiences, but it wouldnt be stable like i currently have. Id be moving across three states with no vehicle and no back up plan if it fell through
-
my mj was my first manual. Kinda taught myself on motorcylces. Its not too hard, just shift when the rpms sound high lol
-
about 5 minutes from ft duchesne, by the ute reservation

Anyone on here ever do any time on rigs? Cousin offered to get me on at a capstar rig in utah, really considering it. Current job is mind numbing slow, and I'm always up for a change in scenery. Just don't know what to expect on a rig, if moneys really worth the labor, etc

storms stayed mostly to the south of us, downed some good size trees, power about 2 miles north of me was down from trees taking out lines
-
honestly you can do whatever you want. yours may run better at higher rpms, may not. No way of knowing until you find out, but first gear for me tops out between 7 and 10 mph, id go check now for you, but my speedo isnt working atm, and I just recently swapped a full cluster in mine, so i've kind of been shifting off the tach, but still mainly by feel. 5th really comes in wherever you want it to, its your overdrive gear, and serves no purpose other than lowering rpms on the highway.
-
Shift points for mine are around 7, 20,35-40, and 5th is wherever after that. Just listen to your engine, itll tell you when to shift

check out my "bad night" thread in the pub, short story is, I rolled it and messed up my shoulder and started taking it apart as much as I can with 1 arm :wrench: can't thank my friends enough for what they did! As for structural supports I'm going to put some 1.5x3 .120wall box to the frame after I plate it. I'd use at least 2x4 from the pinch seam out to protect the sides of your rockers and bottom of your doors a little otherwise your just protecting 1.5" of surface under your rockers lol i may go up to 1.5x3, looking at other builds...its mainly to add some strength to the frame, and in case i drop down on something, it should catch on just the 1.5" tube..but thinking about wider now. gonna stick with 1.5 tall still, with 1x1 braces plus angle tabs to bolt through the pinch seam to, worked really well the way i saw it done. can't quite tell from the pic, but did you weld the tube to the pinch seam, or to the sheet metal on the outside of the pinch seam? edit, found a pic of kinda what i want to do, courtesy of detoursusa's xj slider/stiffeners something similar to this, but instead of the tube running the full length of the frame, i want to put 4-6 braces that bolt on...but need to do some more looking under the mj first...i'd rather use all stock bolt holes
-
How do you plan on attaching it to the frame?? My plan, as of now, is to use 1.5x1.5x3/16 sq tube, tuck it real close to my rockers since theyre still clean, make some foot plates to bolt to the frame, with some smaller 1x1x1/8 tube as connectors, and where the sliders are under the cab, weld tabs on and bolt through the pinch seam to the sliders. A buddy of mine did that on a built zj, and when he hit a bridge and rolled it ($*1tfaced drunk), the frame was still solid and straight, despite hitting the bridge guard rail head on...toying with your design in my head now though...i like it

top rear of engine sounds like the distributor. As for the idle...carb may not be adjusted right...vacuum leak could be anything..my brake booster has a very loud leak, only reason i know its the booster is the sound changes when i brake.\ And as far as the choke, i wouldnt know, mine has an electric choke that i don't have a plug in the engine bay for....can't help there

Read through shelbyluvvs build quite a few times now...remember seeing the new x member now. -
I used it on my old 91 chevy/350tbi. Put 1/3 can gas, 1/3 vacuum via brake booster, 1/3 in the crankcase. Smoked like a dual turbo cummins rolling coal for about 10 minutes...but it was also a 260,000 mile engine that had a rough life. cleaned it out, seemed to help with throttle response and stalling. Drove it about 50 miles then changed the oil. Seafoamed my 896 2.8 mj sunday, same way, changing oil tomorrow, havent noticed any differences...but the 2.8 was damn clean inside, no smoke either

I've been thinking about this, and i don't see much difference between an xj and a zj...and they came factory with 318's and 360s? Wheres the huge design difference that lets the zj keep a 5.9 cool? I believe a ZJ radiator is much taller than an MJ/XJ engine compartment allows, but never looked that closely at them. Even so, they had to install hood scoops to loose hot air on the 360 equipped models. Didnt think about rad height...Well at any rate, i plan on a 5.2 magnum for my 86...from what ive read any engine swap in an 86 is a royal pita...so go big or go home right? Planned on a hood scoop...maybe an electric fan under the scoop to help pull hot air out, similar to what pete has in his -
Looks like itll buff out. Glad your alright. Any broken bones?

I'll check...and mine sounds like it redlines around 3500 rpm..hard to tell with the trans whine and extreme amount of road noise...honestly it sounds like its revving too high at 2k according to the tach -
