1988 comanche 2wd axle swap
BrettM replied to project88mj's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I have an auto with a lockright (toyota 8") in the rear. It has never locked when I didn't want it too or expect it, and it has always locked when I want it locked. I've been very happy. -
correct. some recent decisions have been made that are not yet reflected in the rulebook. read these two threads for the details: http://jeepspeed.net/smf/index.php?topic=108.0 http://jeepspeed.net/smf/index.php?topic=185.0

check the JeepSpeed board. Longbeds and shortbeds are now legal in JS1 with the typical XJ restrictions. In JS3 they are legal with very few limitations, you could have a 120"wb, turboed Hemi, coilovers, bypass shocks, airbumps, linked front and rear, 37" baja T/As... etc. you can't go independant (unless you start with a Libby, new GC, or Commander), the motor has to be AMC/Mopar, front travel is limited to 15"... and few other rules. edit: there is some conflicting info on the JeepSpeed board about MJs in JS1, we'll see how it gets hashed out

i think Pete PMed me on NAXJA... that was quite a while back and the content here basically sucked, so I'd maybe check it out once a month. a couple months back I noticed the content has improved a lot, so now I check almost daily.

thanks for the pics, did you take any of the top side with the door open?

what motor? the AW4 is the only auto tranny the factory put behind the 4.0 in XJs. there are other auto trannys for other engines though.

get 3.5" RE springs and ACOS

Would you mind PMing me some pics? I'm looking for one, and curious just how well these fit. Don't wanna threadjack. i want to see it too, just start a new thread

how exactly do you get 10 points inside an MJ cab? 8 point cages are pretty typical and usually mean 2 under the hood, 2 at the base of the A pillar, 2 at the base of the B pillar and 2 somewhere behind the B pillar...

some closeups of the rocker replacement would be much appreciated, thanks!

$219 is crazy cheap for any cage, let alone 10 point. Rusty's single rollbar is $220. consider me VERY skeptical.

Easiest way to shorten a LB wheelbase?
BrettM replied to BARILLMS's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
it would be simpler to just build a new rear frame than do all that splicing. ditching the bed would make everything easier, or you could get a shortbox to throw on. if you're doing all that work, are you sure you only want to go down 8 inches? you could always go to 99(?) inches like MJ Dan: -
very nice. looks like you did the cut-out rocker replacement? Is that 2x6? do you think there's room for 2x5 for a more flush fit? I'm going to be doing that soon, any tips or better pics?

Easiest way to shorten a LB wheelbase?
BrettM replied to BARILLMS's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
it might be useful for that on the passenger side, but on the driver's side it's pointless for that aspect. i just had it lying around so I used it. -

any shortening done purely with a shorter leaf spring is a waste of time and money, IMO. if you go with an XJ spring you only loose about an inch, which you will never notice offroad. if you go with a much shorter spring you will loose a lot of flex. all this, and you still need to do something about the bed. I really only see 3 reasonable options; 1) leave it long and have fun 2) buy a shortbed 3) ditch the bed, chop the frame, and start from scratch. you might as well build a 3 or 4 link at this point also. -

shortening the wheelbase by just using a shorter leaf will only get you a couple inches, and at the expense of having a leaf pack that won't flex as well. It will work, but moving the front hangar would be a better solution. are you going to ditch the bed? your gas tank may need moving, depending on how much you take the wheelbase down. I shortened my shortbed 6 inches in the rear (and added 2 up front) to get 109" overall and it's great. http://lh3.google.com/llewxamtterb/RS19 ... 010142.JPG -
hardly tech.... replacement interior lights?
BrettM replied to BrettM's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I got them today and tried 'em out. They aren't real bright, and point straight down since they are liscence plate lights, but they will work for me. I'm going to order 1 more and run one near each factory location and 1 between the sun visors. pics some other time -

I've seen a pic of one on an MJ, it was either here or on NAXJA... I think it was in a thread about the 97+ front clips because it had one of those too. Oh, and it was white.
