SOA options.DIY CHEAP
NewfieMJ replied to coon.hunter_21's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Accually , it did . "It's going to be VERY hard to get ~4" of lift with SOA using MJ leafs. You'll have to use FSJ leafs or a Hybrid XJ/MJ pack (MJ main with XJ others). Even with a 2WD MJ pack your going to net 5"+ of lift." Motion Offroad BTW , note the last part of this quote , this man knows how to use a measuring tape :peek: -
SOA options.DIY CHEAP
NewfieMJ replied to coon.hunter_21's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
My 2WD sits in my shop , from the bottom of my spring to the top of the axle measure 4.5" . I could only gain a 4.5" lift if I weld the springs directly to the axle with no perch . It's 4.5 plus the perch height . What does it matter what springs you have . Moving an object a certain distance is moving an object a certain distance , no matter what the object . -
SOA options.DIY CHEAP
NewfieMJ replied to coon.hunter_21's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
This is wrong . there is a minimum gain of 4.5" (D35 w/2.75"tube diam) , then , it's plus whatever height the spring perch over the axle . Mine is 1" for example . My gain would be 5.5" on a SOA with a 2WD The SOA doesn't care if your 4x4 or not . Lift is from where you started to where the end result finishes . Yes , a 2wd is 1" lower than a 4x4 Comanche . But , you will NOT gain extra lift from doing a SOA because your 4x4 . I don't know who started all this , but consider it an urban legend . Measure it !! -
Motion , thanks for your input  OK , so with a spare XJ just sitting there , I could still mock up the springs to achieve my goal . I could get Rusty's 4" spring pack , but @88lb , shipping to Canada is $120 alone :ack: I'll give Motion's plan a whirl . MJ main plus XJ others . See how that works out . That would be fine for now until I can see my way to pay $400 for rear springs and do it right . Might as well try it out and see what I can get , I have the parts already :)

OK , so the XJ shackle is an issue with full flex , nice to know when I do the full conversion . This should work ok for me as it's a 2WD and just a street truck . Next winter gets the full 4x4 swap Mnkyboy , the inverted 'y' design on our steering defllects the toe-in on every bump . I know it can be ran at some higher lifts , but , I hated it on my lifted ZJ . I can't see how this will be different . I'll try it , no saying I'm gonna like it though . lol . My roads are about as smooth as some of your trails  I'm gonna upgrade to the ZJ steering anyways , I have it there , but it's just a stronger design to what we have now . 8" Garvin ??? Man , jeep worlds are so different . I got 7" on my ZJ long armed and you wouldn't believe how many ppl say that's too high . I don't think it's too high , heck , I love the way it sits , drives , and wheels . I can't wait to pull it out again this summer :D SW , thanks for confirmation  OK , so while on the rear suspension topic , another question . Hell Creek . There's a 4" spring kit on there for $160ish , is that just an add-a-leaf ? or full leaf pack ? BTW , thanks for all the info , I'm still adapting my jeep knowledge to the MJ , lol .

This is wrong, there is no 4.0l with TBI I thought the old Renix systems were TB , my mistake . Amen Eagle , there's no way 17 hp is worth the work in this case
-
4" vs 6" would require steering modifications , done properly . I'm hoping at 4-5" , the ZJ upgrade will do . I hate bump steer with a passion . I have the WJ conversion on my ZJ with a OTK track bar . On the rear I raised the axle mount for the track bar , no bumpsteer I do have one question though , what is everyone using for spring plates ? I never noticed on the XJ what's there , but , appears that's where mine will come from . Just thought I'd bring that up :)
-
That's a nice looking truck and in good shape for sure .$1800 seems high from the mechanical POV HO=High Output . Basic difference was the fuel injection . TB(throttle body) changed to MPFI(multi-port fuel inj.)
-
If I measure from the bottom spring to the top of the axle , it's exactly 4.5" . With the perch , that adds another 1" . It's 5.5" of lift no matter how you look at it , 2wd or 4wd . Maybe some variation in height due to perch choice . The 4wd just sits 1" higher due to the springs , they both gain the same lift . I'm doing a SOA with a 2WD , I'm gonna use the stock XJ shackles to lower it down a little more . I want about 4-4.5" too . I'll have an exact comparison measurment on that tomorrow .

I got the lights all wired up and working . Even the side marker lights blink alternately :D I was up late last nite so I also took on painting the grille and headlight bezels white . I think it's such a clean look , I love it . I'm gonna paint the steel on the bumper white next , I think ,lol . Every now and then a guy needs an inspiration shot , so , I pulled out the 32's and stuck em on at stock height . Looks real cool but would require alot of trimming for sure . I adjusted the height to see where the wheels would fit with the least amount of trimming , definately looking at 4-5" , 3" would be the lower max I would do . It would need lots to clear , well , too much for what I want . So , I guess the next plan of attack is to get the front end outta the XJ , and into the MJ with all the lift parts . I'm so close to pulling the powertrain I just refurbished out . I really antidisestablishmentarianism that cursed dash . I have my buddy checking out the wiring in the FSM to see if I could use the dash w/o the insturment cluster . Obviuosly , I'd do a custom one and have mechanical guages . There's a few factors to check out such as making a check engine light but because the heater controls only need a vacumn source and a 12v source to work , that part should work fine . The rest should also be able to be wired in with a little effort . If this does pan out or looks like it's gonna be more trouble that it's worth , I'm gonna pull the power train from the XJ . Swap it in with the rebuilt 4.0 in the 91MJ and go from there Doing this means an auto , which wifey likes , cause the XJ has the AW4 . Rant off , here was the painted grille , stock on 32's -
There were 2 sized 15" Canyon wheels , 7" and 8's . Spacers or adjust the driver's side steering stops like Mcenna said
-
Your track bar is already pushing the pass side out , so , it never helped . You need more offset on the wheels . The factory canyons I've seen used are accompanied with spacers for lifts and bigger tires . Have you had an alignment since the lift ? 2" with cause the toe to turn in alot but has nothing to do with your rubbing issue , that comes from wanting to stuff 32's where a 30-31 fits tight . I'd say you'll need to trim as well once the wheels are offset more

Lift ? Yeah , it's gonna be tough not to . 4x4 ? Absolutely . Usable to the build parts in my garage : IRO lower adjustable arms RE upper s/flex 2-4.5" OME springs RE HD track bar Full V8 ZJ steering , including new steering gear (depending on final lift height , I may go OTK with the steering and OTA with the track bar . A WJ conversion like I have on my 95OrvisZJ would be great) HP30-3:55 8.25-3:55 4 procomp hydro shocks 242 t-case driveshafts from the 91 eliminator 32x11.5 BFG AT's on Eagle wheels All I really need are some disco's , buy the $130 trans I found , move the 8.25 perches .75" each on the 8.25 , and install some rear discs , which I have also . Yeah , I had a pile of parts before even buying this truck . I want to keep it very streetable , I have 1 jeep with a big lift already , 7.5" F&R IRO LA's , Clayton spring and HD track bar , Bilstien long travel shocks , Trac lock'd D44A(still have to truss) LP D30 going in next week , lsd with electric locker . It went places before I thought I would never get , with the front lock'd ,this thing is almost unstopable , only the trans remains original "everything" else was rebuilt or replaced ie: the 5.2 has only 45k from a 2001 Ram rollover This is what I want , just a little higher on the 32's mentioned . Same paint scheme . I just love this truck  , mine's gonna be better , I have the XJ doors ;) I guess I'll never know the inconvienance of having a useless non functional side window  -

Thanks Mike Here's a few pics of the console . It's all fitted in now . Still need a touch up to the heating system and something to cover the gap . All in all , easy swap , very functional , and it's a clean look . Nice upgrade for anyone . -

There are very few changes to be made to fit the new parts . These brackets have to be swapped to mount the fenders/headerpanel This vacumn cannister has to be swapped out to the new bumper , which it bolts onto once the XJ's can is removered . Here's a pic of the inner fender . I ended up painting the upper area , and undercoating the wheel well area , sorry , never got a pic of the after shot The doors are where I began , they are a royal PITA . Lots of tweeking to get them right on the alignment , then , one has to deal with the door post anchor . Mine were welded for the easy solution . The fenders go pretty smoothly . I left the original hood in place to get the gaps correct . This worked really good , the header panel slipped right into place and fit perfect . All lines are good . When I changed the hood , it was a simple one time bolt on , no adjustment required process . Another shot of the interior with the new door panels . I also added the XJ's console which isn't in these pics . I just had to have cup holders  Yeah , they are 4 dr switches but I'll somehow manage to live with them , lol . Last pic of the weeks progress , all bolted back together  Tomorrow I'm hoping to wire up the header panel . No , the wiring is not plug and play . I wish ! I'll be cutting the plug in off the MJ's header panel , and then from the XJ's harness to make an adapter , after the multi-meter gets a work-out , lol . I'm gonna get a friend to tackle the power windows , locks and power mirrors . If I have to do it , the doors won't get tied together :fool: -

Engine is in , and runs great . I also ended up installing a new muffler and 3' of pipe too . Clutch works great also , it was my first clutch job , easy stuff . Took it for a quick ride around my block , all works good , the powertrain I am now happy with . The suspension and steering , well , it need a track bar and new shocks . I know that just from the ride , lol . The interior isn't pretty at all . 22 yrs has not been overly friendly to it . The seat did remain intact , just dirty . The carpet smelled like a 22yr old carpet would , phew .Here ya go Carpet had to go . Besides , every MJ owner wants to really know what kinda shape his MJ is in . After reading alot of build threads before starting , I was quite pleasantly surprised to find this I gave it a quick cleaning , scuffed what little rust was there , sanded and just hit it with some blue paint to cover the metal . I plan to undercoat the floor before installing some new carpet , but , the buckets found their home . Guess it's time to show you a donor for this project . Here's my 1998 XJ with a bad piston skirt knock . It's got 260K Here it is again , missing a few parts :D So is the MJ now too -
The name is dedicated to my late father-in-law . He was grumpy , stubborn , missing some parts , and even parted himself out (research) . When he finally quit , you couldn't have been more proud , or surprised he lasted so long . As you can tell , his charactor was quite similar to a Jeep  , now , on to the show Here's my $300 investment . 1988 MJ Pioneer , 2.5 , 5 speed SWB The body was in really nice shape . Bottom door corners where bad though . The PO had cobbled a fix with fiberglass , I have other plans :) . Here's a few pics after I trailered it to the car wash First order of buisness was to get it mobile . The 2.5 had been cooked from the story I got , so , I never even bothered to attempt a fix . I found a 1990 YJ with 95K and got the engine , plus a head gasket kit for $450 . I got the gasket set because I thought there was a problem . After several tests , it was discovered the YJ has a standard rotaion water pump , the MJ's is reversed . I got a new rad , water pump , t-stat , and lower rad hose , should stay cool now . The PO also installed a new clutch fan and blade :) . When I pulled the engine , it was no surprise to see the old clutch had seen better days . Although this powertrain may be temporary , I don't need the clutch to fail . Si I had the flywheel machined and bought a new clutch kit

Only shims are between the hood and hinge , none to the firewall . I just swapped my 88's hood for the 98 XJ's . I took hinges and all . Bolted it on , closed the hood , I couldn't have better lines :) I'm really happy with it . If the doors went on only 1/2 as easy :(

finally got fuel pressure, but still no run.
NewfieMJ replied to snacob14's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Have someone crank the engine , preferably 5 seconds . Screwdriver to ear , and on the injecter . You will hear it click if it's working . If you have long hair , tie it back :) I say 5 secs cause if this 91 is like the later modeled jeeps , the PCM will shut down fuel and spark if the signals are not recieved from certain sensors after 3 secs . I would certainly check every fuse , and possibly switch a relay or 2 out (ASD ?). I'll have to look in the morning at my 91 to evaluate which options are there , and then get back to you . Only other things on the list are the cam sensor(dist sync) already mentioned or bad capacitors in the PCM (a $5 radio shack fix) -
Pump is on . Everything is working as it should . Engine sounds great and the idle is smooth . Cooling system got a new rad , water pump , t-stat and a lower hose . The PO of the truck also had a new clutch fan , and blade . It washed up like new :) . Now I can continue on to something else , there's lots to do with this truck , I have plans

Screwdriver to ear , other end on each injector , you should hear them click when they fire while cranking . Can you ? -

My 88 has the sepentine belt too . The 1990 YJ engine I just installed had the v-belts though . There should be 2 brackets like the one linked . One front bracket , one rear . I can't recall but I think another small triaglular plate . I have 2 kicking about but I do know one is from the power steering . If you decide to switch to a serpentine belt system , make sure the rotation on the water pump is a reverse rotaion . The YJ belt system ran a standard rotation . It should be the same parts on the YJ . I have that bracket in the pic right in front of me , from the YJ . If your stuck for the parts , PM me . $10 for my trouble + about $20-30 for the :Canadaflag: > :USAflag: postage , crazy to get things accross the boarder :shake: . Let me know , these were being tossed . Maybe I should list them on ebay :rotfl2: -

NewfieMJ replied to snacob14's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
:agree: If you can prime it and it stays running , you have a fuel delivery issue . I would start with a new filter , but if that don't fix it , you need to "test" the fuel pressure . Probably need a new pump but before buying one , trace and check the fuel lines for kinks or damages . Good luck
