  1. ok brett...thats super. yes i did have the XJ in drive. it moved but very slowly. then when i put it in 1-2 it moved just fine. like i said, the MJ works in 1-2, and R. ive never tried it in D or 3 though. i have the MJ on jackstands now...so i think while its up there ill fire it up and see if D works. thanks again brett.
  2. 2 questions about my D44. I'm going to take it out of the truck in a few days, and i have a few questions. how do i take the axle shafts out? i want to clean everything and paint it and i want to paint the end of the shafts (not sure of the proper name). I'm also wondering whats the best way to clean/paint them? i have an angle grinder, wire brushes, and sand paper. thats about it. i might have access to a sandblaster but its not likley. whats the best paint to use? anything i can get at autozone?
  3. thats what matters. looks good pete!
  4. I'm still a noob at jeeps, but those seem awfully big to me. CW, is that the size that will go on your truck?
  5. cool beans guys, that pretty much convinced me to change the u-bolts. now i just need to get the right wheel to use with my angle grinder to get them off. :chillin:
  6. I bought my 88 MJ from a member on this board (BirchBomber). I read all of his old posts hoping to shed light on this issue. The issue is that R, 1-2, 3 work (i know that R and 1-2 do) but D won't. He said that it needed a new shift computer. I researched, and found that it was located under the passanger dash, and i looked and i found it. I pulled it out of my 1990XJ and went up to the MJ. to my relief this was missing from the MJ. I just wanted to be sure that this was infact the computer, so here are the pics. Then i moved my XJ, and D worked....but there was a ton of slippage somwhere. so i don't know if this is the right part. i didnt know where to put this in..so ill put it here. in a box of parts that he gave me there are about 5 of these boxes...some with red stickers and some with orange stickers. kinda peculiar i think. thanks.
  7. that sounds good. ill just concentrate on getting off the shock nuts, and ill have an excuse to use my new angle grinder. thanks!
  8. ive searched on JF for a while, and ive read many posts bashing RC...but none of the people owned them (and neither do i...but i wouldnt have a problem purchasing a set). the people who owned the kit loved them. if it means anything, the people on extreme 4x4 (powerblock on spike) used RC arms on one of the trucks they built (suburban gorilla).
  9. pics/sig?
  10. I'm taking the D44 off to clean it, and rebuild the brakes. ive been spraying PB blaster on the u-bolts and nuts for about 5 days and it just hit me, should i cut them off instead? i think they are origional. would it be better to get new bolts, or try to get the ones i have now off complete? thanks.
  11. brian thats super. gives me ideas for my new mj. (ps...I'm the dude that bought your XJ motor)
  12. well if its under the bed, thatn that can come off. i think there are eight bolts holding it to the frame. the gas tank needs to come off too. I'm really new to MJ's, so wait for somone who knows what they are talking about to respond. if its under the cab then i would just cut out the bad parts and try to weld in new ones.
  13. i like those seats!

That doesn't really mean anything. My 87 XJ said AMC on the keys, had the the AMC logo on the instument panel and seat belt buckles also. If its an 88 and has a 4.0L it is without a doubt a Chrysler Jeep. Oh yeah BTW.... don't feel bad about the oil filter thing, my boss did the same thing to his 04 Silverado. :D damn!! i was really excited about having an AMC vehicle :shake:

i might take the doors off of the XJ, but they are quite rusty at the bottom. if i can some how repair the doors then they might go in. and yes, the cab is REALLY dented on the drivers side. I'm definately gonna use a hammer and piece of wood. the stack will go...I'm hoping to get a flowmaster 40 series in there. and yes you're right there is no AC in there...just an empty pulley. one thing that ive recently discovered is that its an AMC jeep. not a Chrysler becuase the key says American Motors on it and there are parts that say AMC on it. I'm quite happy about that!

Hey all. Ive been lurking for a month or so, ever since there was a change that I would get my first MJ. Well about 2 weeks ago we (my dad and I) went to pick it up at some kids house about an hour (or 70mi) away. Then 2 days later I went to the RMV and got the title for it. I've started to take it apart a little...but havent done much. The most damage ive done so far was accidentaly completly draining the engine of oil (changed filter...didnt notice that the gasket from the old filter was still there, put new one in, didnt seat properly and then catastrophe...6qts of oil on the ground  please be nice, i tried to clean it up but most of it had already sunk in.) well w/o furter blabbing and embarrasing myself from stupid/harmful mistakes here are the pics. Here it is! Exterior Interior Under the hood D44 baby! And I will be putting the front end on from this... Image Not Found its a 1988, 4x4 (NP 231) 4.0, AW4, D44/D30, long bed. not too shabby for $125 + $50 for trailer rental. mostly just the hood, fenders, and bumper will be transfered from the XJ to the MJ, then I'm going to have it painted. i hope to spend more time here, making this neat little community 1 member larger. thanks! :USAflag:
