If the socket goes where the sport bar switch would be, you my friend have just inspired me to find a unicorn part someday. -

There was an optional one? Like a second one? Where would this one have been if you had gotten it? That's new on me. -

Hey everyone. Thanks to the electrical manual posted earlier I've fixed most of my electrical gremlins. As everyone can see in my first pic before I put the dash back together I'm tidying everything up, labeling for future reference and making sure the cluster is refreshed before I put the dash all back together. It's sprung a few wires that I'm still trying to find answers for. Pics 2-4 are to the right of the steering column. As identified earlier the orange and black are illumination wires but these 2 are strange. One is still orange and black but has a larger square connector. The other one is a single orange\black wire with a single blade. I saw above where someone mentioned the cigar lighter for the square one but the cigar lighter is violet and orange and there is no place on the plate for illumination. I'm wondering if maybe it's an ashtray light with a different size bulb? I don't see an ashtray light on my vehicle so it's sus. I also found two other unused connectors under the dash in pics 5 and 6. Not sure where to start with these. -
4x4 Conversion.. Is it worth it?
ExpatMJGuy replied to Eriko5000's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I'd like for it to be a bit closer but I'm retired Army signal Corp so I never "hate" a trip to Augusta. Need to see if any of my friends are still stationed there. -
I'm in the same situation converting 2wd to 4wd and am ISO a 4wd drive shaft. That or mine will need converted.

I'm about to undertake this same venture. I have a salvage title 99XJ donating all the parts including a butter smooth shifting AX-15. I used to be a dealer tech at Ford and Nissan so I'm not at all scared to do the work. The only part I haven't gotten figured out before I start is where to get my drive shaft modified. Any body got any good recommendations in the southeast specifically within driving distance of Atlanta? -
Jeep comanche trailer wiring harnesses

I love treasure hunting. What connector out of what Cadillac makes this or is this a trade secret? -

I decided to upload a pic of my bench seat. There is a rip on the driver's side but if your getting it reupholstered no biggie as the cushion is not damaged at all. How far south would you be willing to go south? If I can get it into a single day's drive each way that would be amazing.

Do you have pics of your black seats? I'm wanting to do a seat conversion. I live in GA but I retired from the Military just before COVID went down (great timing right) so I am free to wonder the country at my leisure. I just found some junk yard seats from a 95 XJ but the frame will need converting. I'm determining if I fully want to go that route considering I will be trying to get this Jeep though Australian customs in the next year or two. Pics of my seat are up with my Jeep as it's registered on the site under my name.

Hey everyone! I know this might sound like a dirty thing to ask around here but what is the average scrap value you guys have seen for a 4x2 shortbed in the Southeast? I've got the guy down to $700 and I'm most likely going to pick it up even though it's in real sad shape. But it does have some parts off of it I can use, and I figure what I don't use I can part out to the community here before I send it to its final resting place. It's been left in a field for about the last 15 years. It's got plants growing in the bed and one of the windows were left open and there is mold all up in the interior bad. But it has a complete sliding back window which I need and a good tailgate. I also need all the badges which are still on the vehicle, the coolant reservoir, the windshield wiper reservoir. There might be a few other odds and ends I can get. I'm hoping the taillight wiring harness is in good shape and not hacked up like mine. There's usable parts for others as well such as the front grille and of course there is a lot of trash because it has sat and then it looks like it had kids attack it. But it sounds like there is a possibility I might be able to get the engine to turn over, if so BONUS. He said it was running when his grandfather who owned it parked it and later died. I'm thinking between parts and scrap value I'll get my $700 out of it.

You sir are a life saver! It's strange that electrical is alone! Did they not put the diagrams in the FSM? I ordered MR 277 but it's not here yet. If so, is there any other essential sub manuals I need to know of? Besides the FSM, I'm accustomed to driveline component manuals such as the engine, transmission, transfer case, maybe a body manual and that's it! When I've checked this problem off my list, the next diagrams I will be after will be the vacuum lines for the HVAC blend doors. And now that I get a better look at them, and know what I'm looking at the orange wires do look like they could hold some lightbulbs. -

You guys are really awesome and have really shortened a lot of my work. Honestly you open the dash for the first time and see what I saw in that first pic for the first time its real intimidating and I used to work at a Ford and Nissan dealership about 13 and 14 years ago. Especially with the amount of electrical gremlins I need to hunt at once. It's got to be really easy to upgrade these older models with Junk Yard parts. They are even easier than my newer Jeeps models with changes in harnesses based in trim packages. They really all do seem to have the same wiring harness. I'm surprised the connectors weren't at least taped up to the harness like when there are unused connectors in more modern vehicles. The modern manuals have come a long way too from the few sketches I've come across online. -

In the 9th pic there is a cut wire coming out of the just below the vacuum line. When you refer to orange wires for lights are you referring to the instrument illumination of the switch? Auto TPS? Automatic transmission throttle position sensor? Were the options for buttons on the left bed (cargo) light and fog lights? I know on the XJ the rear wiper and defroster was somewhere. I wanna say on the right side. What button options were on the right? i have suspected I’m missing something as far as relays go. Any ideas on what the blue orange and red wired connector in the 4th pic? -
I'm new and I'm just getting started as I just bought my Comanche last weekend. I've delt with many XJs over the years and this is my first MJ and this is the first Pre 97 of either platform for about 15 years! I took these pictures and plan to do a manual hunt in the wiring diagram PDF but if anyone knows exactly what some of this stuff goes to I'd be really grateful as it would speed up my understanding greatly. I only have newer Cherokees to go off of as examples in person the rest I need to find online (like here!) Wires were hanging out the dash and I have no reverse lights, no turn signals, no intermittent wipers, So popped the bezel off and this is what I had only the gauge cluster was plugged in and semi working. It would be helpful if you guys with more experience can tell me where all these plugs go. I'm thinking things like flasher modules? Intermittent Relay modules? The actual service manual for the Jeep will be here in a few days. I'm hoping that helps even more!

I know I need a quartz one but right now I don't even know what connector I have. I just tore the dash bezel off for the first time today and this is what I inherited! It's a S%^& show in there and I have no idea what goes to what yet.

OK So I've had a weekend with my truck and spent some time with her. I was going to look at the brakes first but the previous owner left a wheel lock set on the vehicle and no key. Since the wipers only worked in slow somewhat and only in one speed I decided I have a few wiper blade racks around from Cherokees so I decided lets make a swap. And that's where owning a Comache truly slapped me in the face for the first time. The wiper rack had an AMC plug on it and the Cherokee ones all have Chrysler plugs. Oh well I modernized the plug in the vehicle to make all future repairs easier. Works but the delayed function is still a no go and we now have fast but both are still slow. I'm suspecting that ground issue but I was out of strength and daylight on the day. Getting a good look over I want or need to do all of the following: Finish fixing the wipers To inspect and adjust the brakes and parking break. Fix my turn signal (they don't work). Fix my Driver's seatbelt. (the washer is missing where it attaches to the wall over the shoulder) Fix my non-working speedometer Fix my reverse Lights Figure out why my taillights are in upside down and zip tied in Buy and install Driver's side quarter glass Latch Replace all my lock cylinders and find out why passenger door doesn't lock from inside. Replace my Gearshifter Knob (the one I have is ugly and spins) Seat Belt Warning Lamp Indicator is always on Needs a Front Windshield and weatherstripping Needs read windshild Driver's Door Pull needs repaired Inspect visible wiring behind dash Add a Radio Replace Missing Dash Pannels left and right of the wheel Add Missing Clock Add Missing Rear View Mirror Add Missing Sunvisors Add Missing Dome Lights Add Passenger Grip Handle Pedal Pad Replacements Revert Back to factory style coolant reservoir. Add Washer Fluid Reserviour Perform Bucket Seat Conversion in Grey and Add Center Console Replace Rear Tailgate Replace Rear Bumper Mount License Plate Bracket Lights properly Add 5 speed transmission body gasket Get shift light working again Paint Body & Replace Factory Pioneer Graphics Transplant 4wd components from my 99 XJ Find Red Stripe 4WD selector Move Parking Break to center console. As you guys can see I have my work cut out for me. I know things will come up along the way. As I'm just getting started do you guys have any recommendations for where you guys acquire parts? Thanks

I’m surprised to see the build date so late in 1988. You would think they would have started making 89s by this point. Still works for me! Importation rules for left hand drive in Australia with the least amount of paperwork is 1/1/1989!

9/10 chance it will in Sydney or somewhere or in the surrounding area. 1/10 chance there could be a last minute audible for Melbourne.

Here she is. She's all mine. I'll be headed to the tax collectors office to get the License plates when they open tomorrow. I'm aware she needs some work done, but it's an 88. I didn't expect to just pick her up and be a perfect turn key vehicle. Her brakes are a bit spongy and mainly her faults are electrical issues. And she has several electrical issues. But I'm a good electrical tech so I'm sure I can get it sorted fairly fast starting with the turn signals not working. The body is real straight, and there is absolutely NO RUST!!! I have a 2019 Nissan Frontier Pro-4x that is in the shop because her rear axle has failed ALREADY at 25,000 Miles! She's been there awaiting warranty repair since the beginning of October. Waiting on a rear axle for so long due to the global supply chain shortage. I intend to make my MJ a bit more road worthy and use her for a bit as I don't have a truck right now for doing truck things until my Nissan comes back from the dealership. Once she gets home, I think the next step will be consult with a shop about painting her before I put a ton of work into her mechanically. She may need to be torn apart to paint her properly and I don't want to do tons of work to just undo it. I just placed her in the Jeep registry. The guy that had her before me was a real Jeep guy that saved her from a guy that was going to cut her up, lower her, and turn her into a drift truck! Thank god he got ahold of her before then, and thank god he had too many projects already to take on another! Call it luck, call it destiny, call it whatever but today she's mine! We're hopefully moving to Australia in the next couple of years. I took this project on specifically because I have an 2001 XJ project already in the very beginning stages with a parts vehicle. The XJ cannot come with me as the XJ I have is Left Hand Drive. Australian Law says to register a Left hand drive vehicle it must be over 30 years old. I've loved Comanches for years. I've always wanted one. They are getting harder and harder to find. The Comanche is a North America only vehicle only and was not sold in Australia. I figured if I was going to do a Comanche now is my time and if I am going to spend tons of time on a project before I go, I might as well work on something that has a possibility of coming with me. And then once it comes with me it will be really unique and collectable as it wasn't sold there. My son is in love with this thing too, so this is it, my new primary project and hopefully a family heirloom and a piece of America that will hopefully follow me.

1988, Jeep, Comanche. Image, if available 4.0 inline 6 / Peugeot BA10/5 / 2wd Build date: Unknown, it's been painted over. I'd like to know myself. Current Location: Buford, GA Status: Actively driven headed for restoration pending arrival of some final parts, 4wd conversion, 99XJ driveline has already been acquired for restoration. Shipment to Sydney Australia is pending my family's permanent visa approval by the Australian government. Notes: The exterior was red before being sanded down for paint. The previous owner then lost time and interest and just put cheap primer on the vehicle to prevent rust. It currently has a grey interior with the standard bench seat. A bucket and console conversion will also take place as part of the future restoration. Current owner: I'm the current owner purchasing it today 26Nov2021

Hey guys. I'm a noob. Been an XJ guy for years but I pick up my 88 MJ on Friday if all goes according to plan and there is no rust as he says. Question is as seen in the title. Is MR277 or MR278 the proper manual for an 88 MJ? I've been looking around trying to find proper manuals and on eBay people advertise both of these as manuals for an 88-model year. Not quite as clear cut as the color change of the physical book and the big year on the front of the manuals. My oldest XJ has been a 95 so Renix is new to me and I know the first problem I need fixed is a broken speedo so info on connections and wiring are needed. Thanks
