  1. Yup the little metal tabs. Just clean them up and I also bent then a tad inward so they grab the bulb better too. Worked like a charm
  2. I had some crazy stuff going on with my turn signal and marker lights. Replaced the turn signal sockets with 1996 xj metal ones and cleaned the side marker lights with a small file and everything works great now. Plus the turn signals are brighter too
  3. The Chevy trans won't work because the CPS, at least it doesn't look like it. Also that would need some Fab work. Sticking with the ax15 would need different parts but it's all bolt on. Minus the driveshaft needing to be cut down. Looks like I will just wait for a Dakota ax15 to pop up. Tons of them with the 6 cylinder around me. Go figure. Eventually I would like to v8 swap it so if I get the ax15 now down the road I could use the trans and just swap bell housings back and forth.
  4. Yeah it's 2wd and staying that way. And that would be the best option but that Dakota trans is pretty rare from my understanding. At least the bell housing that is.
  5. Yup street use. I have 225 50 15s on it so quite small tires. And yeah I know about the Dakota bell housing. In the long run I would rather have a ax15 but I just got to driving it and really don't wanna tear it down for a lot of R&D now. Definitely later it will be a project. As for the ax5 finding a 2wd one is kinda tough...
  6. So finally got the Comanche running and driving and now that all the maintenance and broken stuff is outta the way, I can look into upgrades. It has 210 thousand on it and the engine seems just fine. In the back of my mind is the ax4 though. I know they aren't the hardiest of trans so I'm looking to getting another. An ax5 will be a direct swap I know, but the ax15 will be stronger but also needs a lot more work. I've found a ton of resources on it and can definitely handle it. Hardest part will be tracking down parts though. My Jeep is a 2wd and will never see dirt ( hopefully the occasional race track soon). Question is should I bother with the ax15 behind the 2.5? Or will the ax5 suffice? Will be swapping in a 8.25 along with the trans when the time comes.
  7. In my quest of doing a tan interior swap I came to the point of recovering my sun visors. Well the 30 yr old cardboard material basically disintegrated in my hand and I have nothing for fabric to stick to. Do Cherokee visors fit, like from the newer gen ones? Those are plastic so no worries about those. The only thing I really noticed was that the shape is different of the visor itself, but I think it should work. Any input?
  8. I wasn't a fan of the in hose coolant bung adapter thing. It may work fine but seems like another spot for a leak to occur. I ended up drilling and tapping a new thermo housing I bought just like jeep driver did and should work great. Thanks!
  9. So I am installing an electric fan in my Comanche, and I want to avoid using the radiator probe insert. I'd rather use an actual temp sensor in the coolant flow. I bought a simple switch and was going to put in the plug spot on my thermostat housing, but found out it's a very uncommon metric size. I thought about drilling out the factory plug and tapping it for my sensor but I'm worried that because it's steel the heat transfer won't work as it would with brass. Anyone have any insight to this? I'm trying to find a metric to npt adapter but haven't found anything so far. Only things I've found with the thread are oil drain plugs.
  10. Pretty sure it's the dark tan. But not 100%
  11. Looking for a set of manual tan door panels to buy. located in central NJ but willing to pay shipping. I have a set of grey door panels willing to trade if that works too.
  12. perfect thank you. its funny i found a picture of your engine bay on google and was zooming in super close to see the brackets. Appreciate it. I had upgraded to a different alternator so I had to modify the bracket a bit but I took it apart so long ago I totally forgot about it went together.
  13. Hey guys. I recently took off my alternator to strip down the engine for cleaning and such and I can't figure out the two bracket system. Seems I forgot to take a picture. Anyone of pics of the alternator setup? Everything I can find online has that idler pulley set up which mine doesn't. Thanks.
  14. So just like the title says, I have this shock attached to the front of my 2.5. Never seen anything like this before but it's old and I want to replace it. Any body know the part? I've tried searching it with 10 different names and never could even a mention of it
  15. trying to get the interior on this thing buttoned up so brakes will have to hold for a bit. I did get knuckles and a booster off a WJ this past weekend so it will happen. Also ordered a s10 front air dam and will try to make it work. The entire cab is filled with parts and I got more on the way, but no time to work on it sucks.
  16. Hmm I'll have to keep that in mind if I do the shackles. Scored some wj knuckles and booster this weekend along with a full gauge dash, dash clock, and other interior bits. I'm gonna be working on the brakes in the near future so I'll post up about it
  17. Wow a lot of information here. So it looks like I have options for the brakes. Either way I'm getting new knuckles because I have the 2wd spindles. I'm hitting up a couple of yards this weekend and they do have older stuff so I guess my first plan would be get some 88 to 89 knuckles for that GC/gt500 set up just ease of using the stock steering, if I can find any. I work at a parts store part time so I can get the rotors and calipers pretty cheap either way. The GC/gt500 stuff isn't that much more expensive than WJ Also looking into shocks too. Found an old article about a lowered Comanche and it said he ran f150 shocks. No year given though. Guess I'll have to check lengths and stuff.
  18. Is that for a Jeep specifically? I'm pretty sure the spacer is just for the u joint ball joint alignment so I wouldn't need it. My next question is steering. I'd like to not have to mess with it just yet. I know the wj knuckles have the high mount. Could I just use the lower tie rod mount with the stock steering?
  19. I'm gonna be running 16 or 17 inch wheels so I'm good in that department. Also, for the conversion. Part of it is running 00 to 01 hubs so the pattern stays the same. I'll have to check out a wj when I go to the yard this weekend. The coils on Rock Auto are only like 50 bucks for the zj so I'll give them a shot relatively soon and report how they work. Before I do the rear conversion I want to swap axles so that's gonna be a bit down the line. I gotta decided what axle I want unless I come across a sweet deal for something in the near future and just wing it.
  20. I kinda figured it would be the same but my main concern with the wj swap is the bearings. Don't they use the axle shaft to hold preload on the bearing? And did not know they even made 2wd wj I'll have to see what bearings they used. As for lowering yeah I gathered that before I even had this Comanche as I research a bit before finding one. I was planning on using the rear coils out of a zj for front lowering. Rockauto has heavy duty ones listed which I hope means spring rate not height. Rear is gonna be blocks and xj shackles for now. As for shocks what did you use? I don't want just cheap gabriels. Maybe kyb or even belltech has some nice ones. Just gotta know what vehicle to get them from. And I'll check out your write up. Thanks.
  21. Yeah that's the goal haha. I have the xj for my off-road fix so now it's time for some street. I did the disk brake on my xj with the 8.25 which was not bad at all and helped greatly stopping my 33s. Having a 35 now I want to swap in either an 8.25 or 8.8. so for the front though, is the wj knuckle swap the same as a 4x4 axle? I have no issue swapped knuckles if it all fits. I found some 2wd stuff where people started but it kinda fizzled out on information with specifics. I'm heading to the junkyard this weekend so along with the booster/mc I wanna grab what I can as it's not exactly close by. I'm also working out the lowering thing as well. Way more used to going up lol not down
  22. Hi guys, new to this forum but not to Jeeps. Just picked up an 88 2.5 ax4 2wd. My plan for this thing is get it good for DD duties as I want to work on my xj a bit more. But at the same time I want this to turn into a possible autocross vehicle/fun street driver. Engine and trans will be swapped eventually but right now I want to set up the suspension and brakes. As most of the stuff needs replacing I want to upgrade from the get go. My main focus right now is the brakes. I would like to do the wj booster and also knuckle swap, but pretty much all info I found is for 4x4. Is the 2wd much different? Mainly the whole spacer system that 4x4 use for the hub. Any info would be great as other recommendations if there are other brake options. Thanks!
