I'm in Waterloo, about two hours from Dubuque, and pretty much willing to travel to the ends of the earth if it means being able to finish my truck.

Would you be able or willing to part with the whole head?

Parts Q's (and hopefully A's)
Comanchejess replied to Comanchejess's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
turns out the reason the parts I bought from Jegs don't work is because they're for a totally different inline 6 jeep motor, not the 4.0... Jegs doesn't sell valve parts for the 4.0 -
Need help finding parts

It's an 87 4.0, and I'm keeping everything on the valve train stock. -

hey everyone I need some help finding valve spring retainers. I've posted an ad in the wanted section. I can't seem to even find a part number on the retainers, and I've bought three sets of keepers on accident. if anyone can help either by posting where yours came from, or a part number, or if you happen to have any extras I'd be eternally grateful. This is holding up my head being completed.

Hey guys I am rebuilding my 87, and I can not for the life of me find valve spring retainers. I have been sent three sets of keepers. If you're selling parts off of your head it would be great if you'd let me know. I'm willing to pay whatever for a half decent set of retainers.

have any of you fellas or ladies bought valve stem keepers from quadratec? I just ordered 24 for $70, but they had no info. did I buy two sets? will they *actually* fit? (the set I got from Jegs wasn't right for MY valve stems) will they be decent quality, or will I be redoing my head/engine again minutes after I get it built? This is my first solo engine build, so I'm super nervous about every part I order, and I apologize about that.

When I was in college myself and six of my friends folded ourselves into a 1960 Nash Metropolitan that my (college and current) roommate owns.

I don't know if you've made a decision yet, but I've had a lot of success with Toyotas. Camreys and corollas are fuel efficient and inexpensive, and also very reliable, and if you're looking for a truck, the 22RE Tacomas are also stupid reliable and fuel efficient (for trucks).

I'm back and full of nonsense again. I've bought a donor engine and transmission, which I just got back from being bored, honed, decked, magnafuxed, new cam bearings and frost plugs.. The works. I've decided to try to tackle the carb swap, and I am looking for my distributor right now. If anyone has done this with a brand new stand alone setup; how did it work? Was it a pain to build, any tips, and any links to specific stand alone distributors/ignition setups would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

I'm looking for a *mostly* complete Comanche for a project idea I have. don't need motor/trans as I'm intending to swap in a 4bt. doesnt have to be in any great condition. hoping to stay under $500, but would be willing to go higher. I'm in no hurry to find one at this exact moment either. Thanks.

I might be a *little bit* insane, but I'm wondering if any of you guys have ever seen anyone do or have done a few things... I have some ideas for my girl if I start getting some money rolling in again 1. Has anyone ever changed from the stock throttle body to a 2 bbl carb? I want to do this for reliability and being able to easily swap it out, also seems cheaper than replacing the actual throttle body. 2. Has anyone ever TIG welded their own intake? I have a *fairly* cheap source of steel, am a decent TIG welder, and again, am looking to swap the throttle body for a carb. 3. Is it possible to delete sensors, even as far up to the cpu? if I could have it all be mechanical and a lot less electrical with the nonsense wiring and such, id like that and my most ridiculous question in this thread... 4. Has anyone ever successfully swapped the auto trans for a 4 or 5 speed? Is it feasible without literally dropping thousands of dollars? Anything you learned from doing this? This is also a reliability thing, as well as I just think it would be a way more fun truck to drive... these are all hypothetical situations that Ive been thinking about and may or may not look more into sometime in the future. it depends on how froggy I start feeling I guess, because id really just like it to be in good enough shape to be a daily again, on a commute of about 1hr/1:15hrs

Hey guys, I am having quite the confusing issue. My beloved 87 MJ has had a misfire for quite a while and I've been trying to run it down. After replacing my fuel pressure regulator, I thought my next issue was my MAP sensor. I replaced it, only to end up cleaning connections and putting the old one back on, as it wasn't the MAP sensor itself, but a vacuum line that ran to it that was cracked and split. After I tracked all that down, I noticed that when I plug the vacuum line at the back of the intake it seemed to run quite a bit better for a few minutes, but then she'll die. She also seems to be idling a little high, and even with the new pressure regulator is still running very rich. I have a Buddy who had similar problems in his tacoma. He changed the plugs and o2 sensor(s) and that seemed to help his truck. My exhaust is rusted through in several places, including right at the manifold, so I'm wondering if it could be an o2 sensor/exhaust issue or more of an intake/air fuel ratio issue or an issue with some different sensor or maybe the throttle body? I'm almost out of ideas here and anything can help. Thanks to everyone on here who reads my page and helps to track down these issues to keep my (mostly) stock Renix on the road. It's a cool truck and hopefully will be cool for years to come...

trying to find a fuel line
Comanchejess replied to Comanchejess's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The parts store genius told me that the white plastic insert doesn't come separate from the fuel line. that insert is what broke. -
Does anyone know where to get the fuel line that goes to the fuel pressure regulator? The plastic clip on mine broke when I replaced the fuel pressure regulator, and I can't seem to find the lines through any online retailers, and my local auto parts store says that they don't carry them and can't even order them. if someone knows where to find one and could get me a link I would greatly appreciate it. also if this post needs to be moved that's fine.

Relocation of Renix 4.0 vacuum canister
Comanchejess replied to meljr's topic in MJ Tech: DIY Projects and Write-Ups
Out of sheer curiosity, say someone's vacuum canister wasn't all there, like it had gotten into the tire and had a giant hole rubbed through it, would that cause major issues like stalling and a poorly running vehicle? because it looks like that is what happened on my 87 4.0. -
I work for a gun cabinet manufacturer as well as being a bartender. I haven't had a day off from making cabinets since they closed the bars in Iowa a month ago. the stability is reassuring for me that I can at the least pay rent and put gas in my car. I am making time to do more work on my 87, especially as the weather gets nicer. My truck is one of the things I don't want to be without if $#!& really hits the fan. I did make a run to Illinois with my roommate today to stock up on a couple gallons of rum and whiskey.

I hadn't quite gotten that far on the list. hopefully I'll have a minute this weekend to be able to look into that a little closer.

Only thing I have ever had problems with, with harbor freight tools is their ratchets. Pittsburg ratchets are not something I trust under any circumstances, but everything else I use usually comes from there. Except the welder, my roommate and I have a nice Lincoln set up that we got when we got done with college.
