Allow me to clarify, instead moving left and right, I meant turning the axle left and right theres a bit of play in changing direction. From what I hear a little play is OK. I'll gotta check what's up with the proportioning valve prop rod. Far as I know it's been like that since I bought the Comanche in 1990. Thanks for the input. Peter

Took the drums off today, looking for a mystery clunking. I get a half dozen clunking knocks usually starting out in first. I'm thinking maybe axle bearing. Right rear axle leaking a bit. Left rear axle leaking a bit more. Moved the axle left and right, a little play, I'm guessing play in the pinion gear. In and out movement is a bit, didn't seem bad. No grinding, usual noises turning the axle. The diff has 300,000 miles on it. Replaced the front u joint a few months ago, rear u joint seems good. The mystery noise continues.......

Grabbed a rug out of a 88 at picknpull. Kind of a shame to see a Comanche heading for the grinder that's in pretty good shape. ___ Checked my wheel alignment, We're good.

Removed the TPS (throttle position sensor) and idle stepper motor.. The engine was reving around 2k rpm's, it took 15-20 minutes for it to kick down. So I cleaned the brass tip on the stepper motor for no particular reason and put it back together. And now (so far) it's running at a smooth 500-600 rpm's at idle. :clapping:

Did some touch up painting, using brush and rust paint out of a can. Gotta get'er done before the cold weather arrives. Having some issues with tail lights. Sometimes the left brake light doesn't work sometimes it does. Sometimes the right tail light parking light doesn't work sometimes it does. After some poking around, looks like the switch in the steering column is going bye bye. Time for another pick n pull special. I don't like taking the steering wheel apart. Took some pic's of what looks like a crack in the bell housing. I'm hoping it's not cracked.

The whiny noise while driving, it is still pretty faint, but I don't recall hearing it before. I was figuring the rear end, but while moving and stepping on the clutch the whiny noise goes away. I checked the tranny( BA10 whatever) and it's got lots of fluid. Rear dif's got fluid. I noticed on the bell housing what looked like a 6 inch crack, couldn't tell for sure. I'd appreciate if someone has some ideas what causality might be heading my way.

This Comanche was in pick n pull Calgary Alberta. Not sure what year it is. Thought I'd just post it here, now that is gone forever.

Lately, Put speakers behind each grill for the CB. Replaced the drivers mirror with one that actually has the adjuster working. Pick n pull special. Replaced the rubber trim around windows. New muffler and pipe, the harder part was getting the old one out. Put some blue accent lighting under the dash, and red lights by the instrument panel. Did an oil change, with a Fram oil filter. Greased nipples. Changed the fuel filter, about 2 tablespoons of water came out of it. Ummmm. Took in the view while working on the Jeep. There was another 2 cruisers to the left of the picture. They stopped a pick up with a bunch of natives riding in the back of the pick up. :Canadaflag: I think there's more...... oh yah, touched up some rust spots, used POR 15 and replaced the stick shift knob.

bought a tail pipe 7', muffler, fuel filter, 3 x 2-1/4 clamps and one can of grey high heat spray paint.

Bought my Comanche back in 1990, hasn't left me sittin on the road yet, except for when I took out a street lamp back in 93. I would of made it home with busted up front end and rad, but when the 2nd tire went flat after leaving the accident a few miles down the road, I was houfing it after that. I always managed to limp home or whatever. I've found sometimes you have to hit the part in question a couple of times and yer up and running again. :Canadaflag:

A month or so ago I changed my oil with Shell Rotella T 15W40. I've had the Comanche for 20 years, it's got half a million k's on her and I decided to treat the pick up with better oil. What I have noticed so far, 1. The engine is more peppy, get's up to 4000 rpm quicker than usual. 2. I used to be able to see blue smog coming out of the exhaust at 3000-4000 rpm's, now I don't see it. 3. Sensor's indicate the engine is running cooler than usual. 4. I'm not adding oil as often as I used to, plus I don't see the usual oil drips on the ground under the engine. I was planning on changing the head, but I think I'll wait till next summer if it lasts. I've come to the conclusion that Shell Rotella T 15W40 is freakin' awesome stuff.

MJ studdenly won't start...please help.
2360 replied to Disturbed's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I'd check your fuel filter, might be plugged up. About a month ago my truck just died driving home from work. It started for a few sputters and died again. Did this several times. I was figuring the fuel pump, got under the fuel tank and banged on it hoping to give it enough life to get home. Truck started after a few tries sputtered a bit but then off I went home without incident. Next day or so I pulled the fuel filter and all kind of orangee yuck came out. Put it back in haven't had a problem since. I wouldn't want to change a CPS, doesn't look like fun. I'm a bit worried my CPS will go some day with 502,000 km's on it. -
Recently I hooked up a new CB antenna. After all was said and done the SWR was 1- 1.35 on channel 19. I also installed Bilsteins front shocks (for the 1st time) that I grabbed at picknpull. Going see these babies are all what people say they are.

Engine remanufacture or rebuild the head
2360 replied to 2360's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
My Comanche is an 88, however the parts I took were off a Cherokee. I got my 4.0 L head of this Cherokee with this sticker on the door. Grabbed the front shocks also, turned out they were Bilstein shocks. Went back the next day for the rears but they were gonzo. -
Engine remanufacture or rebuild the head

Ahh, If I remember right that's what at picknpull guy wrote on the rear quarter of the Cherokee. Everything under the hood looked pretty identical to my Comanche. I almost grabbed a electrical radiator fan that was located next to the prop. There was a date painted on it, I think it said Sept 21 88. -
Engine remanufacture or rebuild the head
2360 replied to 2360's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Well I decided NOT go with the remanufactured engine. The estimate to remove and replace was about $3700 without tax and could be more depending on what they had to fix or replace. Went to picknpull and pulled a head off an 86 Cherokee. I started on this Cherokee, but once I took off the valve cover everything was coated with a thick layer of black yuk. I figured this isn't right. It was like it was burned on or something. There was a blue 86 Cherokee (240,000 km's) in the next row which I took the head off. An interesting learning experience taking all that stuff apart. I also grabbed a couple of front shocks and the exhaust manifold. All that came to about $90. So far so good. A quick question, if you're exhaust manifold is cracked what are some of the tell tale signs that it's cracked apart from a visable crack. I'm guessing it makes a certain noise. Thanks for the input guys, -
I got a $4000 quote to remanufacture my 4.0 L Too much cashola for my tastes. I'm thinking I could get away with rebuilding the head for a lot less. My question is will a rebuilt head keep the engine going for a few more years? Engine got 500,000 original kms. Pushes blue at about 3-4000 rpm's and sometimes when I first drive away.

Road trip through BC, Canada – where should I stop?
2360 replied to 1990 Pioneer 4x4's topic in The Pub
If you're looking for a touristee thing,Barkerville Historic Town might interest you and your wife. There are various commercialized hot springs in BC. If you can find one that isn't commercialized, bonus. If you're going near the coast I think the salmon runs are happening this time of year, that might be worth a look see. Taking the ferry from Vancouver to Victoria (tourist town) and then taking the Coho ferry from Victoria back to Port Angeles USA might be a good route. The ferry rides are a few hours. -
what kind of cap is that? is it the softtoper I made the "cap" back in the 90's, a wooden frame from 2x4's, 1x4's and I sewed a canvas cover for it. I've gone through a number of coverings. My favourite was a blue camoflauge material. http://basmith.shawwebspace.ca/ :Canadaflag:

My 88 Comanche died driving home tonight.
2360 replied to 2360's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thanks for the input guys. I changed that resistor not to long ago with a used one. I'll keep an eye on it. I checked the connector for the fuel pump, looks great. Did a resistance check on the wires, to ground good and about 80 ohms through the pump. Pulled the fuel filter, it's not that old but lots of junk came out of it. I'm hoping maybe it was plugged up enough that it choked the motor last night. Pump sounded better on start up, maybe I got a better connection by pulling and putting back that connection. I'm heading south out of Calgary to Brooks tomorrow, hopefully I'll make it there and back without incident. Thanks again, :Canadaflag: -

Turns out pick n pull didn't have that Comanche. I'm not sure if a Cherokee pump would work, I went with, I don't think so. -

This morning turned on the ignition, heard pump cranking up. I've got trip out of town tomorrow, hopefully I'll get this figured out today. 1988 Comanche over 500, 000 kms E'gad I'm using a FRAM oil filter! Got a full tank of gas to boot. -
Perhaps someone could give some advice why my pickup died. I was just driving home and the engine died out. Started it again it rev'd up about once and died again. Did this about 6 to 10 times. Managed one time to get it off the road. I was thinking either fuel pump or that cps thingy. I crawled under and gave the fuel pump line connected at the tank a couple of whacks. After a couple of tries the engine sort of start then as I sort of drove off, the engine perked up and off I went. Managed to go all the way home ( 5miles) without incident. I turned the engine off then turned on the ignition to listen to the fuel pump whining up at the tank. But I didn't hear it, just light clunk under the hood. I have noticed this last year sometimes the after turning on the ignition the pump makes a nice continuing whur, sometimes choppy sputtering noise. If someone would like to give there opinion, I'd appreciate it. Once again the Jeep got me home. Thanks.
