Project: Scrapyard Save
Lthompson741 replied to Lthompson741's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
Hmm, I'll have to try that. As far as adding pictures, It's easy on an Iphone by on a Macbook I have yet to figure it out. Apple has this arbitrary photo software that syncs with my phone and it has it's own gallery. I can "drag and drop" but It doesn't seem to do much of anything. Hopefully someone with a mac will chime in. Yeah I know, I've got 4 total projects and swap them when I get tired of one fighting me. It's fun but daunting. I figured it was the MJ's turn for a while in the garage. -

Side note: How the heck do you post photos from a Macbook? I can do it from my phone, easy as pie. Also I hate them all being clustered on the bottom. -

Finally brought her out of storage. Started tearing out the blown radiator and gathering the parts for a open cooling swap. I swear every bolt is fighting me, two nights later and the only thing holding me up now is the lower trans cooling line. Things to do: brakes (soft pedal) windshield figure out why drivers window will not close all the way radio plates and Insurance. -

Driveway Ornament To Daily Driver: 7 Years!

Yeah, one lunch break. I read fast. You rambled enough! I’ve thought about transporting XJ’s and MJ’s up here and selling them as $2500 buys you one here with no rocker panels. I’ve got any Arizona XJ in storage now that hasn’t seen snow to my knowledge, and will stay that way while I own it. -
Looks good! Glad you got it on the road. I finally started working on mine getting it on the road and mine is in similar shape as well. Glad it made it to work and is dependable for a $700 truck.

Nice build thread. Just read thru it on my lunch break. Beautiful truck. I could only wish to find something that clean in the rust belt. Heck half of the junk yard pics you posted contained cleaner trucks then whats on the road up here. -
Looks like a fun project. I’m not so sure about working outside with the temps you posted but I suppose wouldn’t be too bad. Looks like a pretty decent MJ otherwise.

Rusty and Boring 1987 Sportruck getting fixed

Any updates? I enjoyed following your build. Looks like you were making some progress. Did you get to use the plow yet? -
I had to go back and look at the pictures, I didn't catch that it was all manual, non power anything. That makes me like it even more!

I've always wanted to get one of those lightbars and adapt it to fit a XJ. Don't see many liberty's on the road with them anymore. Hell hardly see any Liberty's period.
-
Love the ZJ! I don't think i've ever even seen one for sale. I would probably jump on it if I did.
-
Well a little update, I sold my 92 XJ. I ended up listing it for $900 bucks thinking I would be sitting on it for a while, being it's a rusty beat up 5speed and it sold in 24 hours. So now I am down to my 85XJ and the 88MJ. I spend some time on the 85 cleaning it up, reattaching badges, cleaning the interior, and maintance. I really didn't drive it all too much as it's needs tires. I am on the fence on selling it, and may just sit on it for a while, but I'm still trying to figure it out.

Project: Scrapyard Save

Actually there were probably 3 or 4 2doors there. 2 ran and drove and were sold off to someone who was going to build them up. The other two were so rusted that they barely made it on the trailer and were parted. The 2 door in the pic with my comanche sold for $300 bucks, 4 banger 5 speed 4x4. I would of jumped on it if I knew, but the owner sold everything but the Comanche. He also had another 2wd 6cyl comanche that he sold for $800 that drove home. -

Your a lot farther then me at this point. I did the injectors and Alternator and ran out of time and money. Good score on the bedsides! -

Dang, how far away from the rust belt did you have to venture for those? -
the pictures I posted are older. The steps and flag stickers are gone. All the is left from the P.O. is the tow lights under the rear bumper, and the flat tow hook ups, up front. It has no rust at all on it. It lived in Arizona it's entire life and I'm pretty sure it's never seen salt. It's spent two winters in storage now with me owning it, and the P.O. was in Arizona every winter since new. I appreciate the advice and I may do that. Maybe this one will be the first to go.

It's a factory tire carrier. It believe it's got AMC markings on it.
-
I don't have a price I would sell it for a decent price to someone who would appreciate it. I don't have much in it, and am not trying to get rich. Thanks for the comments guys I also think it's a very nice Jeep and way to nice to cut up. Its about as loaded as 1985 can get: - factory tire carrier -Jeep sentry system -power locks, power windows and seats. Power mirrors -Keyless Entry (Remotes MIA) -Fog lights -Dealer added AMC/Jeep splash guards (1 is a repop). -A/C that still works -Tape Deck It's been repainted, as I was told the Arizona sun killed the clear coat. It is by no means a good paint job, but it looks decent. I love it, just wish it had any other motor besides the 2.8L

Here is a couple of pics of the 85. It's a Arizona Jeep it was repainted because of clear coat failing at one point, but is the factory color. Everything works on it, even the A/C.
-
I've thought about it, but it seems that it requires major surgery to complete. I'm kinda looking towards the 3.4L swap as that seems the easiest. I'll load up some pics of the 85 here in a little bit. Yeah there are all kinds of threads on engine swaps, I just don't know which way I would go. And I need another huge project like i need a hole in my head.
-
It's funny you should mention the swap as i'm researching it right now. It seems like it would be a lot of work, but I do have a complete donor sitting in the back of storage unit. As far as storage, I've a very nice storage unit that I can fit 4 jeeps in currently, and they are currently costing me money per say, but obviously I'm paying a storage fee. The 85XJ is the only one that has plates and I do make it a point to drive it in the summer. I have friends that have all stated they would love to go halves with me on my storage unit, and put a four post lift in and make a mini shop so cleaning the unit out would save some $ for me in the long run.
-
I've also got 2 CJ5's but those are with my for the long run. Yeah I know they are nothing special, just figured i'd give insight into them. Apparently 5 jeeps is too many according to many people. I had the 2.8 listed last year, and got a a lot of calls about it, and as soon as they realized the motor, it was a no-go. It seems like I would have to find someone who understands that it is a decent stock XJ that is rust free in the rust belt.
-
Ok, long story short I've got to many toys. The storage area is getting full, and I'm starting to feel like a hoarder. Not to mention, the wife, friends and family have all made comments about my collection. I'm trying to figure out which if any of my jeeps should be sold. I kind of know which one I would list first but wanted to get a second or third opinion. So I will list them out in no particular order and see what others think I should get rid off. I'm not trying to sell anything thing here, just seeing if anyone has insite as to what they would get rid off. 1) 1992 XJ, 5 speed 4.0 4 door. - Good: All new tune up parts, new gas tank, exhaust, ECM, battery. Starts and runs like a top. Would be an excellent candidate as a donor drivetrain. Lifted 4.5 inches with newer tires and a newer clutch. - Bad: The rust, it was a snow plow for a good part of it's life, and the rockers and floor pans are going. It is still solid and could be fixed. I've acquired 4 matching rust free doors, and I have the ability to fix the rust. The rear end is welded, and the rear leaf springs are shot. It is not pretty by any means, but given a good wash it could look decent. There are also no sway bars. - Notes: The is the first jeep I owned, i've had it for going to 15 or 16 years I believe. It in part started the sickness. I haven't driven it on road in almost 10 years. It's been trailered to off road parks mainly because of the above mentioned problems. I hate the thought of finding it in a junk yard or seeing the roof hacked off and the subject of some you-tube video. Hopefully if i would sell it, it would be to someone far away. I know rusty XJ's aren't worth much, and it would most likely be beat to crap and junked instantly. 2) 1985 XJ 2.8L Auto 2 door - Good: It runs good, the A/c works and it's a rust free fully loaded with every option. It is a unmolested survivor that is pretty neat to see. - Bad: It leaks oil, the motor is a dog, and it doesn't like to sit. - Notes: I bought it a couple years ago, off of an older man, and bought it appreciating that it is a unmolested survivor. It will never be taken off road or beaten on. 3) 1988 MJ elimiator, 4.0 auto $X$ - Good: Its an MJ. it runs awesome, had new gas tank, and fuel injectors. Everything seems to work. Has a factory roll bar. - Bad: Rust, it needs rockers bedsides and a paint job. It cleans well, but you can tell is borderline a rust bucket. - Notes: I've owned it about a year it was a deal I couldn't pass up. I re-did the fuel system, and got it running, as it was bound for the scrap yard. You can see my build thread i've started here. "Scrapyard save". I've owned it about a year now, and haven't had the time or the funds to get it on the road yet. Sorry for the wall of text. Hopefully someone will chime in.
