I can't remember off the top of my head but will test after work today. Does it being magnetic or not determine something within the construction? -

That is very interesting! I will post picture of the shift knob because there was definitely no fifth gear in the transmission.. -

Pete M below is the set of numbers off the AX-4. I am assuming that is the part number you are looking for. (not sure how to tag you so hopefully you see it) The numbers in the second picture are on the silver rectangle forward and left of the duck tape. If that is not what you need I will take another look. ► ........... Wrenching Update .......................◄ The AX-15 transmission is installed! Did notice an issue that I didn't check when out but the front drive shaft has a different style U-joint then was the transfer case will accept. Good news is the front drive shaft U-joints need to be replace so that should correct itself. Began hanging the exhaust to get it in place before lift the skid plate. Also had to drill out the lock cylinder in the wife's Cherokee as both keys have been lose for a week now. Thankfully that didn't take long and finished up the night there. -

I will take look for it when I get home after work for you. -
Here is the link that contains my post regarding the AX-4 being removed. I was able to canniblize part from it to be used directly on the new AX-15. The two transmission look similar in how they are constructed with the different plates bolted together along the transmission's length.

►............ WRENCHING STATUS .....................◄ Well it was a long night but the four speed AX-4 has been removed!!! Used a ratchet trap to help with the disconnection pull then man handled around on the motorcycle jack to slide it out from under the jack! Cannibalized a few parts off it [reverse light sensor and intermediate shift handle] for the AX-15 re-install. Had to make a quick modification to the bellhousing for the crank sensor as it came off my 88 Wrangler that has a carburetor . Started to just cut out a section for the sensor to fit through but was getting issues with the attachment bolts alignment, so after cutting the whole out for it, I just rip the plate off. The AX-15 and NP231 all bolted together and filled up ready to be installed. External slave cylinder was also cannibalized from the wrangler as well and installed into the engine bay. Tomorrow should contain pictures of the transmission back into the truck. Until next time have a great day / night everyone. -

►............ WRENCHING STATUS .....................◄ With the dead line approaching for the trip this weekend, I am still fighting with the last bolt to release on the transmission. So with resisting my initial frustration of just using the logic of "Can't be stuck if liquid" by cutting the bell housing, I got myself a die grinder and have been trying to grind the bolt head down to allow removal. However, my portable compressor is not suited for the continuous task of running the tool so I have to wait for the tank to refill. Therefore, in that time I finished up the work on the AX-15 transmission that will be going back into the truck. The version of the transmission has an internal breathing vent which I didn't want to use as he has to vent through the shifter cover so I instead tapped it for a 1/8" NPT hose barb for a 3/8" hose. I forgot to take a completed picture before installing on the transmission. From there I wanted to double check the transfer case I had was going to mate up. Everything aligned and the transmission was having no issue shifting. With the time deadline I didn't try to clean the transfer case any, don't get made. From there some new headlights came in to replace the factory lights that finally died on me. Only the driver side went out on me but the they were terrible in my truck to the point where my wife would consistently ask if my lights were even on. Before anyone ask, no I have not installed the relay system yet but that is my first thing to do after this weekend. Been working on my wiring diagram to ensure everything is right and that I have time to not rush before tearing into that. But here is the new headlight installed. I enjoy the old factory look so I just ordered some cubie replacements with 60/55w H4 bulbs from Daniel Stern Lighting. Shall see how they work before the relay install and compare afterwards. From there that is what has occured last night, in between spending more of the time with terrible grinding wheel eating away at the one bolt holding the entire swap up. Here is to hoping that today allows the transmission to be removed and swapped. Util next time. ► .......... WRENCHING STATUS COMPLETED .................... ◄ -
The Comanche has a puegnot BA 10/5 five speed in it currently which will be replaced after the gears finish going and my wife learns to drive a manual on it. She like the size of the truck as the dually for the horses she feels is to big to drive. But once I can convince her to learn she will enjoy driving it around. Perfect size for her to drive.

Emergency Brake Trouble

Where did you get your E-brake lever? I haven't had the time to figure out how to repair my hand after the wire snapped. -

Apparently, it blinded and confused me when I first opened it. Now the real question is how look with the shiny last? ►.......... WRENCH STATUS TRANSMISSION INCOMING .......................◄ Today should be the day to find out how easy the transmission is going to come out. The 4x4 shifter and clutch line are the two remaining items left to remove before transmission process begins. The afternoon wrenching was delayed due to errands and helping the wife. But once in the garage the transmission mount, rear drive shaft, and exhaust came out smooth with little to no problems. Only problem was the bolts for my custom exhaust mount behind the muffler has some unnecessary long bolts that were annoying to remove the nuts from. (Will get a picture to show the bracket picking up the double hanger mount) From there had a little oh and moment. I was not paying much attention to the whole system when I started to remove the front drive shaft. The long arm front suspension connects to the skid plate so forgetting to reduce the pressure on the coil springs I began remove of front drive shaft. Well once the tension was loosen, the front u-joint slide out of the yoke and the front axle began to rotate forward to release the pressure stored in the springs. So my wrenching buddy (CapitalCityPinoneer) had to hustle to get blocks, boards, and a jack stand piled up to support the front bumper to keep the truck frame from falling while I'm using the long arm to keep the axle from rotating more. After some hustling and scavenger hunting, we got some saw horses and board to a height the remove 90% of the compression force within the springs. From there the front drive shaft was removed from the transfer case and stored with the rest of the parts. New u-joints are on order to replace the worn front drive shaft units. Other than that, the front bearing retainer for the transmission was sealed up and secured to the transmission and the new breather value is getting tapped today at work. Pictures for that will be shown in the next update. ► .......... WRENCHING STATUS COMPLETED .................... ◄ -

►.......... WRENCHING STATUS TRANSMISSION INCOMING ....................◄ Alright got the Trailbreaker into the garage and started wrenching to swap in the rebuilt AX-15 with modified counter shaft. Additionally, the final parts for the transmission arrived to finish the external slave cylinder swap and new shift cover. Had a nice scavenger hunt to find enough blocks to reach and support the transmission and transfer case during skid plate removal. Removed the long arm bolts to the skid plate first followed by the transmission attachment bolts while a motor cycle jack head up the skid plate so I didn't strain or crush myself. Now with the skid plate, out time to start disconnecting electrical lines and draining the fluids so it doesn't leak every where again this time. Also did a sight inspection for future lights to be mounted on top of the truck once my supply rack gets completed in the future. That is all for now till more work gets completed tonight after work. Have a great day everyone! -
My other Comanche has a four speed and it looks like the AX-4 bolted to the 4.0 engine. So therefore wouldn't the AX-5 bolt to it? I might just have to get a picture when it comes out to double check that. As for my better half she is doing much better and pretty much back to full strength. She felt a little windy the first part of this week but that is no longer bothering her. Now she is just sore from getting back into shape for riding the horses we have. I am still surprised while blinded keeping your eyes closed you were able to replace the wrench and close the line before it bleed itself dry. Went for little joy test ride to deliver horse supplies to the farm. Going to need a nice cleaning once everything gets buttoned up.

So during the swap I discovered that the Eliminator has the dreaded BA 10/5 transmission instead of my previously thought AX-5. So that will be swapped out at a later date after if eventually dies or my projects list is reduced. Pictures will be upload at a later time but last night was the test drive for the Comanche. Started and idled rough the first few times but took it out on the street and it drove great. Truck is about 90% complete now. With the new slave cylinder discovered the clutch line has a small slice in it causing it to leak and the gas gauge needs to be messed with still. Other than those mechanical issues the dash needs to be put back together to clean the interior up. But that is one project down. Now back to Trailerbreaker in the garage to do the transmission swap, hopefully in a week and half.
-
After returning from my trip I began work on replacing the clutch slave cylinder. My normal wrenching buddy CapitalCItyPioneer was down to help who ended up removing all the transmission supports and bolts while I had to take care of my new wife who tried to die on me with a serious virus infection. Well with her stuck in bed I would rotate between the garage and checking on her but we still managed to get the transmission out after a bit of fighting. With her now 95% better I had the ability to return to the garage and swap in the new slave cylinder and reinstall the transmission. Now to reinstall the transmission support and cross member and bleed some lines. So hopefully a little test drive will be achieved today after work finally.

Vakarian's Comanche 'Trailbreaker'

Pete M, they are indeed the best and not back to work in the garage. Here are some pictures from my trip in paradise. It was a nice trip but now its time to catch back up on the projects and remember how to be productive at work. Been working on getting the junkyard gem back up and run only to have Trailbreaker blow out its clutch slave cylinder on me as well now. So once the Junkyard Gem Comanche is completed time to swap out the AX4 for an AX-15 transmission. Only have a weekend and a half before I need to drive to North Carolina for a paintball event so no time to waste. -
Thank for the video! We could not get the Comanche to roll by us just pushing it. Had to use the red Comanche to drag it out from the wooden car port and the tires just dragged on the gravel until it the asphalt where it jerked and started rolling. However there was still enough friction and resistance that the blue Comanche didn't want to roll for us. So with the red Comanche bumper way to high, I borrowed the keys to my fiance's XJ to push it.

Anytime man! ComancheClub members stick together and help each other out! So my red Comanche was running a bit warm the entire trip but never got to the point of over heating. We stop because we were hearing a loud grinding noise coming from somewhere. Upon stopping the temp gauge started to creep up so I popped the hood to make sure nothing was wrong and I had fluid. Turns out a gasket around either the thermostat or water pump decided to start leaking again. But from there on out I just make sure there was extra fluid in the tank and only reached 230 when we entered the city and we'er stuck with standard city slow driving. Under normal driving condition it was warm a bit but started at 215. All and all it was a fun little trip. -

Thank you very much! Look forward to it and I will provide some pictures for everyone. Just wish I could take the Comanche for better pictures.

Only have two (2) MJs, just had three at my place. The gray / primed Comanche is Capital City Pioneer's on the club here. Just had it at my place to do the suspension and transmission mount. It just got moved back to his place so he can work on the easier stuff plus I'm going away on my honeymoon next week. For the Junkyard Gem, got the rear brakes and the new single line I needed to replace all taken care of this weekend. With the brakes seized before I started, I took the drums and a wire brush wheel and touched them. Only focused on the inner and outer surfaces that touched the brake pads and the rim mounting surface. You can see where I started to clean before taking a picture of getting all the rust and crap off. Other than that just put the wheels back on and got Capital City Pioneer ready to move the following day. Won't be much of an update for a while but the next step is to drop the transmission and replace the slave cylinder.
-
A new battery has been installed to fix the non-starting issue. Then after a few scavenger hunts over the past few days from some springs launching out the rear brakes had been replaced. Only things left is clean up the drums and replace the passenger brake line. Both end fittings were completely rusted and round to the point you couldn't see any shape of a hex. Driver Side Passenger Side Next on the list is removing the transmission to replace the internal slave cylinder and mess with the internals.

Thank you kind comments on the Eliminator. Yeah I was amazed at how clean the truck was. The entire underside of the truck was lined with something to protect it as was as the bed with only the top of the tail gate lining loose with a little rust there. I agree with you there Pete M as I have only found a total of two other MJs in the junkyard besides this one and they were in ruff shape. Never thought I would be uttering those same words of bringing her home from there. Thank you on the truck and I can't wait to get it back together to just cruise around in it with the soon to be wife. Maybe she will finally be able to learn how to drive a manual since she can reach the petals in this truck and my knees aren't in my chin since it has bucket seats. Additionally, within 30 minutes of joining a Facebook group for the Comanche someone was asking if they could buy this truck. Eaglescout526 it is a shame indeed. I may be of this newer generation, not by choice as I just miss the cut off, but I rather try and fix it over just getting rid of it. It is ridiculous what people with throw away instead of just trying to fix a simple issue. Also, thank you for reminding me to go register it. I will do that tomorrow after I get the VIn number when I get home.

Here are some pictures before pushing into the garage to begin work after getting a quick hose off to remove a bunch of pollen. And here is my 8 month old shop dog Riddick guarding (hanging out as it got late) us while we work.
