Yes sir. Sorry sir.

Crap! I'm a liar. Rechecked the tips list and I haven't done 5. Just 1-4. I guess that goes on my ever-growing list of troubleshooting.

I haven't had a sec to troubleshoot. After Dec 6, I'm hoping to carve out some time. I don't have a garage, so that doesn't help. My latest symptom to add is an odd cranking pattern if I start and stop a lot. Yesterday's example: Stopped at Dollar General, shopped a bit, started no problem. Stopped at Lowes, shopped a bit, started no problem. Stopped for gas. Turned over about four times and then started turning VERY slow. Like it was freezing cold or something. I gave it a rest, tried again and it was fine. Stopped to pick up Chinese food. Turned many times before catching. It seems to not do well with a lot of restarting.

I've done 1-5 so far.

Rotors and Pads recommendations
NC Tom replied to NC Tom's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Unfortunately, I'm not finding any brand name ceramic pads to fit an 88. The Centric posi-quiets may be my only option. They have some extended wear versions that may be better for all my hilly mountain driving. Rotors are even more frustrating. I'll just try NAPA Premium Pads and Rotors and see how it goes. Thanks for the suggestions. -
Well, I have no helpers. I'm jealous. 🙂

Is the small child who knows how to use it included for $6? I could use a helper.

Rotors and Pads recommendations

Thank you. I actually read this post earlier. However, Black Magic doesn't sell a pad for an 88. -
Okay, but that sounds expensive.

Recording was outside the cab. I'm near Deep Gap. A little over 2 hours from York, SC.

I have uploaded an mp3 of a squeak/squeal I get when it's cold outside and louder when cold and damp. No noise when it's warm outside. I know it may just be a belt, but I figured I'd upload the sound in case it's a squeak that is specific to a part. MJ Squeek.mp3

Was told recently to use "premium rotors and pads" on my 88 MJ. Premium? As a cynical former Art Director to me "Premium" just means they are shiny or the box is printed in four colors. I've read good things about Black Magic pads, but they don't make pads for my 88. I'm open to brand suggestions. Please suggest!

I know there are many, many posts about stalling and many, many posts about high idling. If these issues occur at the same time, does that help with the diagnosis? (88 4.0 Pioneer Auto, Renix) I have been dealing with an intermittent high idle on startup for some time. Only at startup and mostly on warmer days. Opening and dropping the hood seems to correct the idle. I know, VERY technical solution. Recently, it stalled while sitting at a light. (First time stalling, BTW) Started again, ran a bit and stalled. I had some nice folks push me out of the way because it would not restart. After many attempts, it did start. Seems like it may stall while sitting at a light, pressing the brake, but no stall if just idling in Park. My work around has been to shift into Neutral if I have to sit for awhile, then back to Drive. I have already done the ground refreshing stuff to no avail. Again, does experiencing both the conditions mean something specific?

Help diagnosing steering woes.
NC Tom replied to NC Tom's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Oh boy. This sounds like money leaving my wallet. Thanks for the help. Guess I'll be getting dirty soon. -
My 88 4WD Pioneer is letting me know something is amiss with the front end. I am hearing/feeling clunks and pops when turning to the left. Also noticing vibration at hwy speeds and VERY stiff sharp-turn steering. The only new component is the 4 yo power steering pump. Before taking it to a pro, are there some things I can check on my own?

Glad to know there are a few of us rambling around the NC mountains! I love my truck. However, it's starting to show it's mechanical age and I'm getting nervous about the cost to keep it going. The biggest issue now is something ain't right with the steering. I get clunks and pops and vibrations. Anyhoo, that's for another post.

Agreed! I'm driving one-of-two MJs in Watauga County. That I am aware of, and I haven't seen that other one in a long time. There are more parked and rusting then on the road here.

Haha!, yeah, I did that last year.

Will do. Thanks for the starting point.

After suffering a third winter with a struggling blower motor, I decided to replace the motor today. It's all in and working. However, it's only really blowing from the defrost vents. I'm reading that is a vacuum issue. True? If so, what's the fix?

Thanks for all the replies. I went with new items instead of replacing with old parts. Runs much better now!

Perfect! Thank you!

Sure. If I had the truck with me, I'd go looksee. But I don't. I'll keep looking online.
