I really like an engine & tranny with the proper attitude
mythreesons replied to mythreesons's topic in The Pub
I don't know what gearing it has. It is 4WD. We are working on the list, slowly. This morning, before it got stupid hot, I fixed the used to work now don't turn signals. Turns out the PO forgot to put the hazard relay back in and the hazards got turned on so the turn signals quit. Makes sense, right? Yes, I'm scratching my head at some things. People are funny. -
Son #3 bought a 92XJ as his Olds Cierra just wasn't fitting his needs. I spent some time driving it Saturday and more today. I gotta say, I LIKE the 4.0HO and the AW-4 in that thing. I stuck my foot in it from 65 mph, at 80 it was still accelerating like it wanted lift-off speed and the tach was about 2500 which is a long way from redlining. Son #2 said that when he drove it, it was always dropping down a gear coming out of a corner turn. Sure enough it just seems to want to git-up-and-go. (I might adjust the kickdown cable a tad just because it seems a little touchy.) We've had a 2.5 with AX-4, renix 4.0 with AW-4 and the whatever-it-is4.0 with whatever auto tranny in the 2002 WJ. None of them accelerate like this one. Sometimes attitude is nice. :D

Let's see......... It used to be that you loosened a screw and rotated the distributor to retard or advance, right? So what you are saying is that you have a screw loose? Welcome to the club! Grey hair and forgetting are next. :D

You don't have to have the fancy add-ons to do some serious testing. Key off, lights off, doors closed, hood lamp unplugged (if it works at all) ---- Measure battery voltage This will tell you first if your even close to having enough to turn on the electrics and spin the motor. If it was to start, you do the same measurement. At idle, the battery voltage should be higher (than the off condition) if the alternator is working. You have indicated at least two different problems (maybe more). I would get the truck running first, then wonder about all the add-ons that will drain your wallet.

Tell me if I got this right: You started your 87 MJ to charge the battery and move it to a different parking spot. You shifted into reverse, left it in gear at idle while you talked with a friend. After some amount of time, the radio blinked, you heard gear grinding noise and the engine started to splutter. You then turned the engine off and scratched your head for a few minutes trying to guess what just happened. When you try to start it now (as in every time after last turning it off) you hear very quick "tap, tap" noises but it doesn't sound like a "click". You know that you have some voltage from the battery because the headlights turn on. If I got the interpretation correct, then yes, you definitely have a problem. Is this a manual or auto? Which engine? Were you sitting still when this all happened? What have you already checked? Yes, I know. I have questions and no answers. I could only give a wild donkey guess without more information.

So what your saying is you belong to a neighborhood swingers club for Jeep's? Just throw your keys on the coffee table and whatever you pick is what you drive till the next meeting? :D Better than wives, I guess.

Good info for a starting point. I don't have a schematic in front of me to tell you where to look, but from your description your not getting electricity to the engine components. I would start at the battery and follow the wires (both). Check for loose connections, blown fusible links, blown fuses, wires shorted to engine/body, etc. Armed with a test light, you will be ready for a treasure hunt. Good Luck!

Since I've already made a fool of myself elsewhere today, I'm not going to assume anything here. - So it's an 87. Which engine? Which tranny? - Done any work to your MJ recently? - When you say it died after you drove into the driveway, describe how it died. Sudden off, that's it or sputter, cough, kick, gasp, off or something else? -When you say the lights work fine, which lights? - Pardon my question, I don't speak easterner very well :D .....What is jumping off and rolling off? (See my first statement above about my actions today.) There is a quick and easy test that you can run without getting any tools other than the one in your pocket. Insert the ignition key and turn to the on position. Any lights in the dash that should come on before start up should be lit at this point. The fuel pump should prime. The blinkers should work. This tests your ignition switch and gives an indication in another couple of areas. It is NOT a definitive, 100% test, but rather a quickie test to help narrow your search. Scott

Until this last paragraph, I would have suggested that you inspect the brake switch and it's associated wiring. Now, I'm not so sure BUT it wouldn't hurt to check anyways (well if you're flexible it won't hurt, too much, probably, maybe). Scott

help request with dash power problems
mythreesons replied to STERLING STINGER's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
A couple of those seem a little funny (not haha funny). I'm not real clear how the ignition tumbler could keep the headlights, marker lights and dash board lights from working when you don't have the key in. Maybe it's my lack of understanding the internal workings in the column? At any rate, glad your running again. Scott -
help request with dash power problems
mythreesons replied to STERLING STINGER's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
When you say everything is "fine", what do you mean? You traced power from the battery to the fuses and through the fuses? You pulled the fuses and they are not blown? When you pull the head light switch to turn on the lights (without key in ignition) do the dash lights come one? Do the headlights, marker (parking) lights come on? When you put the key in and turn to the on position, do the idiot lights, check engine light, e-brake light, whatever you have come on? Does the truck start when you turn the key to start? Have you checked the various ground wires for good solid connection? Did this happen while you were driving? Scott -
Dozer, I use a 50/50 mix of Acetone & ATF. I put the mix in a old gear lube bottle that the spout had been trimmed just a little. The mix is very thin. Skake up the mix before using, it likes to separate. It had seemed to work well the few times that I have used it. I have even put some in a mason jar to soak small parts in to ease clean up. Good Luck! Scott

Pete, if you need your TomTom in the house, the MJ addiction is the least of your worries. :shake: :D :wavey: Scott

low idle and oil pressure idiot light.....
mythreesons replied to rnobles's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Ok going from very vague memory here............. Did this problem just start after running the seafoam through it? If not, is the low idle why the seafoam or were you working on something else? If so, then I might say that it has loosened some gunk and at low idol there might not be enough fuel flow. Did you change the fuel filter? If I remember correctly, the 2.5L engine on a 86 has one injector so any fuel system blockage will be a big factor. Fuel pump pressure I think is fairly straight-line, so I might look a little farther down the delivery system line. Others are going to have to chime in with any other suggestions. There are a couple of members here (whom I can't remember right now) that just love those 2.5L engines.......Maybe one of them will catch this and straighten us out. :D -
:teehee: :teehee: :teehee: Just good natured ribbing fellas, please don't beat me with your canes!!! :D :D Scott

It's raining cats, dogs and small furry animals right now. I can't go out in that, I'll melt. :D I'll check tomorrow and let you know. Edit: I forgot that I parked the GC under the porch. Don't worry I didn't get wet. Tag on the door calls for 225/75/16. Tires on it are 245/75/16.

Anybody know this fella? http://www.lunghd.com/ I've seen his site referenced here several times for the great info it has. It would be a shame to lose that information. Scott

Earlier this year, I was looking for an XJ for my wife to replace her Suburban. Long story short, ended up with a 2002 GC Laredo. Burgandy with the grey wrap panels. Cloth seats and the single manual temp control. It has the 4.0 and the Selec-Trac (I guess the NV242) and I haven't even guessed which auto tranny. The 4.0 does fine with us on the highway. At 70 mph, three or four adults, the rpm gauge shows almost 2K. I could get better gas mileage with it if I ran a little slower, but I don't like getting run over by OP people going to/coming from the lakes. :D (inside joke for those reading) In all seriousness, I really only have two complaints so far and it's early to call them complaints: 1) The rear wiper/glass angle SUCKS! Any amount of road mist and the window is covered. The rear washer works and the wiper wipes, but it's not the whole window. When I turned 16, I had a job as a delivery boy and learned to use the mirrors and not turn my head so I'm used to being able to keep track of others vehicles, thus my frustration. 2) I forget......must not have been very big. I can give complements on several features: 1) The steering wheel is pointed in line with my body when I sit in the seat. To me, it's a big deal when the angle of the steering column is off perpendicular to the body it wears me out faster on long drives. 2) While the 4.0 engine might be a little under powered, when our road to civilization was thick with snow, mud, muck, potholes, ruts, etc. It had no problem putting enough power to the wheels to get through. The last snow we had drifted on the road about two feet deep. When that melted onto already saturated mud, it got a little messy. 3) The longest time I spent behind the wheel was just the other day looking for an XJ for son #3. After about 2 hours, my back did not hurt. That is a very good thing to me. Here is a picture of it when it was "clean". Keep in mind that it's a minimum of 2 miles to pavement. The dealer I bought it from had put these tires on it. They are about 4 sizes up from normal (according to door sticker), but they don't rub the fenders and they do clean out the mud that gets caked up in the wheel well. :D :D

Good Grief!!!!! I had you pegged for about 40-50 like me, but your WAY older almost like Eagle and Jim. Boy, was I wrong!!!! :D :D Scott

low idle and oil pressure idiot light.....
mythreesons replied to rnobles's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
From your description, the oil sender is telling you that oil pressure is low (turning on the oil light) which is caused by the low idle you are talking about. The bigger problem is why has your idle gone kaput? Before we all start to tell you our experiences with idle problems with MJs.......How about you tell us what you have. It will help a lot in trying to help you get the monster running right. The easiest way would be to add the year, model, engine, tranny info to your signature from your user control panel after login. If you are one of those kind of people that hordes MJs, then you will need to specify which one your working on with which problem. You can see how that could be confusing. :D :D Scott -
replacing cracked coolant bottle
mythreesons replied to jeepcj11's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If you get a new plastic one, check the cap height. I have seen one that had a taller cap that caused an interference hit with the hood. It ended up causing overheating as the system wasn't closed anymore. May have just been that MJ, that hood, that mounting shelf bracket, that new cap........ But I check things now after that incident. Scott -
Let's see if I get this straight........ If not, I'm sure someone will correct me. :D The only manual trannys for the 2.5L were the AX-4 and the AX-5. The only difference was the added 5th gear in the AX-5. It will not bolt up the the 4.0L engine. The only trannys offered for the 4.0L engine were the AW-4 (automatic w/overdrive), the BA-10 XXX 5 speed manual and later the AX-15 5 speed manual. The AW-4 is a decent tranny, but it is automatic. The BA-10, commonly referred to as the pukegoat, was phased out and replaced with the usually preferred AX-15. For your situation, if you swap in a 4.0L engine, you will need a few extra parts from the donor vehicle to complete your swap. Basically, you take all the insides from the donor vehicle that relate to the operation plus a couple of new parts. There are LOTS of write-ups in the DIY section that will help you to see the road ahead. I still haven't read all of them myself. Also, Pete has worked on the search engine some lately so it works a little better. If you limit searches to one forum, like Tech forum only, you'll have a bunch of info to read. Hint: search doesn't like AX-15 but it does like AX15, so try different combinations if one term doesn't work. I guess the question I still have is why not buy the BIL's MJ, fix the tranny or replace it and have two trucks? You would end up on the good side of the situation. Scott
