I'm a little confused...... You stated that your MJ has a 2.5 with a 5 speed but you don't know what tranny it is yet your signature states you have a 89 2.5 with a AX-5. Not enough Pepsi today??? :D As for the important stuff..... Your BIL's 4.0 engine will go into your truck. Your tranny will not bolt up to the 4.0. What is wrong with his transmission? Why not fix it and have two MJs? Scott

Off the top of my pointy little head............ Old plug &/or wire "slightly" shorting a little to ground causing the funny reading on the tach? By changing the plugs, which of course means the wires are moved/wiggled you might have gotten rid of "slight" short. It might have been just enough to barely cause a problem with the tach, but operate "OK" / not noticable until in overdrive. Or in the same arena, cross arcing from one plug wire to another causing the tach signal to go funky? Hmmmmm, electrical problems, gotta love it. :D :fs1: :D :fs1: :D :fs1:

Brake light switch

It's available at most parts stores. About $10. Make sure you get the right one, if I remember right the variance related to cruise control or not. -

Somebody needs to go make-up with their truck. There was a LOT of name calling going on recently for a problem that WASN'T the trucks fault. If you don't, she will turn loose of her mean & ugly side just when it hurts you the most. :smart: Scott Old enough to know better, not act better. -

Just curious enough to ask............ Don't worry, it doesn't involve buying a part, yet........... What happens if you unplug the O2 sensor and then start it up? Yes, in most systems, that means open loop mode, but I'm not real sure what limitations are under open loop mode. Scott -
Try carquest, autozone, o'reillys, whereever autoparts-r-us for a CPS. Carquest sold us one for $35-40. Yes, it's not from a Chrysler/Jeep dealership, but your truck is dead and it needs to move, right? Scott

Ok an update on my electrical problems
mythreesons replied to livinginh's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Maybe it's had a little fluid leakage problem on the fusebox? Is the fusebox nice and tight to the firewall on both sides? Strange problem. I don't have anything else that it could be right now. Scott -
Oh to be young again and handle those kind of hours.......Wait?!?!?!? What am I saying? I remember that time in my life. It was _____! Scott Heading to take a nap before supper

I see. Seemed like he was heading to the finish line then got quiet all of a sudden. We'll just have to keep an eye out for another one for him. Scott

Weird Electrical gremlins
mythreesons replied to livinginh's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
:waving: Hi neighbor! Couple of things come to my mind: 1- You mentioned that the Generator light stays on dim. Did you check to see what the alternator is putting out? Not enough voltage out will cause some weird happenings. 2- How flexible are you? Speaking for myself, I am getting a little beyond the point of laying upside down on the seat, head at the pedals, feet in the pass. window. I can get there, but getting out isn't fast and it's uncomfortable. If there is a lot of work under the dash to be done or a lot of time to be spent, pull the seat out. Makes it a lot easier. :smart: I say all that cause it sounds like your going to be in the dash checking wiring all over. Is that lifted XJ of yours dark blue? Scott -
I remember that we looked at one like that on up the road, but I don't remember the name of the place. We didn't drive the XJ because they had a 2000 WJ Red with black leather at that time that had just been washed and pulled outside as we were getting out of the truck, which is the trigger that caused my search parameters to change. ;) Scott

Comanche trouble . . .1988 2.5L TBI.

A can of air duster (for cleaning your keyboard) when held upside down will spray a freeze spray. Cheap way to find heat related problems. Scott -
6 Inch pipe approx. 20 inches underground holds the water lines to/from the pump at the back of the stove. The pipe is regular thin walled PVC. Inserted a copper "radiator", that the hot water is pumped into, into the ductwork of the house furnace. The furnace blower kicks on in the house and just circulates air through the radiator. Water temp is 160-180 degrees F so the air is still warm on the longest duct run at the output. Ends up with electricity to run a 1/8 hp pump, furnace blower and a little squirrel motor to fan the fire to heat the whole house.......About 2200 sqft. I also have the water heater piped into this system so that it fills the WH with water that has run through a pipe in the water jacket in the stove. Essentially, the water heater is now just a storage tank that occasionally has to heat the water once it gets cooled down. BELIEVE ME when I say, nobody gets a cold shower whether your first or fifth in line. Scott

TerraWombat: Yes, it's common. We live in the sticks. It's a minimum of 1.5 miles gravel/mud/pothole/snowdrift/ice sheet/whatever road condition you can think of before you get to asphalt. We do have trash service that comes through our area, but I (like a lot of folks) don't want to pay what they want for it. Collect glass and metal cans and take them in to church. Standard policy that I have is donate for one month of trash service and use their dumpster for what I don't burn. Paper, junk mail, old catalog, etc. goes in the stove outside to heat the house. It likes stuff like that, cause it is a hungry bear. This is it's normal diet: aemsee: Got the FOB cleaned up, don't think I will need a replacement. Thanks again for the offer. Scott
-
aemsee, Thanks for the offer. I will take a look at it tomorrow. Might just clean up the housing and sand down the rough spots. Might take the opportunity to fab one out of wood which is what I normally work with. I'll let you know in a couple of days. Thanks again, Scott

While your checking the easy stuff, check the brake pedal switch. If that is actuating good, follow the voltage and see where it goes. :dunno: On the 88 we have around my house, the connector was in bad shape. I fixed that. Then started having weird tranny torque converter problems. I went to looking at the brake switch and it seemed to be acting kinda funky so I replaced it. $10 part, 10 minutes (most spent finding something to kneel on in the mud while reaching inside the cab), no problems since but I'm waiting to pronounce "fixed". The wife is getting used to it. Big difference from two suburbans in a row. I had all four wheels rebalanced yesterday but that's the only big thing that I feel I should do for this new-to-me vehicle. Standard items such as oil change, hose checks, etc. are going on, I just consider them as normal little things. I have to keep reminding myself that it's her toy and I shouldn't "play" with it.

Son # 3 was burning trash this morning and luckily saw the extra set of keys for Momma's GC IN THE FIRE!!!!! Must have gotten knocked off the wall keyboard and fell into the trash before it went outside. We were just telling Mom about it and son #3 says the key just needs to be cleaned up but the FOB is probably fried. Mom pushes buttons and we hear the horn honk when it locked the doors. The response in the room was "Hey, it's a JEEP."      Scott (not willing to push that with Momma's Jeep too far)

Ask the nurse to attach it to another appendage, like a toe? (What? Do you really think that a nurse would even consider THAT other request?) Tell her you got to have your fingers for typing. I'm surprised they let you have your communication devices on in the room, or are you "undercover"? Scott

So you saying that when this happens it's NOT because the battery is dead, right? If so, then your problem is not with the battery or a drain on the battery but a connection that is/is not stable. It would almost certainly, most probably, very possibly........ well, I would check the first wires from the battery. The positive goes to the solenoid and to the start relay connection where a bunch of fusible links get their start to various places (lights, fuel pump relay, etc). The ground wire from the battery goes to engine ground down by the starter. Other grounds for the system should be checked. Might be easier to have it happen and start checking where the power goes and where is doesn't just follow the wiring diag. and check for power. Easy to do using a test light, but pay attention to where you ground the light to. If to the battery or the engine. Might help to identify the problem. May also have to use a meter to test continuity of your battery cables. Weather conditions, driving conditions, holding your tongue wrong can make "going bad" cables take a quicker route. If you have ANY questions about your battery cables, replace both of them. Let us know what you find. It's the easiest way for the rest of us to learn. Scott

Yes, 4.0. I flat refused to even consider the V-8's. I really do like the the 4.0 engine, sure it has it's quirks, but they are well known and time has proven the design. 113K miles which I didn't feel too bad about considering it's 8 years old. She seems to be pleased with the choice and it's easy on the driver so that leaves me with one little problem.......... Side view Hmmmmm, this looks suspicious....... Ah ha!!!! We have found the dirty evil doers!!!! May be time to thin the herd some.......... :shake:
