Well in that case its a 96
-
I've never been able to find a good way to determine years on tcase or aw4's maybe you could help with that but it did come from a 96
-
No 96 but it could be a 97 tcase
-
Hi guys recently made my 91 pioneer 4wd, but had tcase issues so off to the JY I went. Pulled another np231j with aw4 just because it was there and cheap but got the tcase home and noticed it was different than my other no extended housing does this thing have an sye or am i missing something?

Seats! Who Has What In Their Mj
ggcnash replied to farmerjohnson's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Other than being power, those looks exactly the same as Eliminator and XJ seats (see mine above) so I'm guessing '80s Grand Wagoneer. The headrests I have are XJ only, otherwise the ones in the Eliminators are exactly like yours. Both my '88 and '91 Eliminators had grey ones identical to my XJ ones other than the headrests. My dad has an 88 laredo he bought off the lot with those same seats with what your calling xj only headrests so i guess my question is did the dealership add the headrests to my dads seats? If that is indeed the case, than that would be the first I've seen that. Like I said above, headrests were both the solid kind in an '88 and '91 Eliminator which pretty much covers the years. Maybe the ones with the holes were a Laredo thing. It's hard to say without documentation, I've only ever seen them in XJs though. The headrests are interchangeable though. Found out some info dad said this was definitely stock headrests for 88 Laredo package because it wasn't the only one on the lot and I looked back at classified section all original 88 white Laredo that just sold on eBay about a week ago it also had the circle headrest must have been a Laredo thing -

Mj Transmission Questions

I did not say the 2WD and 4WD TCU and ECU would not work or not run in either configuration, I said they are different. I'm not doubting you either. I have no idea of the internal differences of either module. But, to avoid OBD1 fault codes, the TCU and ECU modules should conform to the specs of the drivetrain they were designed for. Have you tried checking for fault codes on your rig? I don't think I'm getting any codes though i havent checked? Ill get my service books out tomorrow I believe that the 4wd tcu and 2wd is the same model/part # could be wrong on that -
Mj Transmission Questions
ggcnash replied to willbur16g's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
There is some bum dope above, I'm not going to sift through it. Yes, the 2WD MJ will come with a 2WD AW4. In order to modify the 2WD AW4 for 4WD, you will need to swap out the 2WD tail extension for the 4WD transfer case adapter. This will require a different output shaft to adapt to the transfer case, and a complete teardown of the 2WD AW4. Not economically feasible. The best option is to swap in a 4WD AW4 from a donor. Then do the transfer case swap etc.. The MJ AW4 transmission harnesses are not the same physically, but functionally are the same. It can be cut and spliced to work, but the sensors like the speed sensor moves from the 2WD AW4 tail extension into the transfer case and other differences, so again it makes sense to use a harness from a 4WD w. AW4 92-95 XJ or 91-92 MJ donor. Other things that need to be addressed are the ECU; the 2WD and 4WD ECUs are not the same, likewise for the TCU (transmission control unit). The connectors are the same, but their function internally is different for 2WD vs. 4WD. Another good reason to use a harness from a 4WD XJ or MJ to save you grief on the wiring and keep it simple. Swapped in 95 aw4 and transfer case plug and play 2wd ecu and TCU works perfectly -

That's news to me I thought the ecu and TCU were basically the same only difference in harness that i can tell is the 4wd light on dash not doubting you but mine seems to be running fine with 2wd TCU and ecu -

You can keep the column doing the same conversion myself with a 91. Find a 91-96 aw4 for a plug and play later years will work with minor wiring harness changes there is a great naxja link that would help just Google aw4 trans its something like "everything you ever wanted to know about aw4" very informative. Yes the front driveshaft will work from Cherokee and try to find a non cad Dana 30 HIgh pinion look for a 99 xj to pull that from -

Some other parts I've managed to get on my JY adventures MJ buckets with brackets, MJ full console, 97+ power mirrors (dunno if I'll try to wire these in or not) extra pair of taillights and so on still looking for the D44 rearend. Back on topic is there anything else I will need as far as the 4wd conversion goes I know I still have to get t case linkage or fab one got the d30, aw4, 231j, front drive shaft, gonna cut my rear one down (cheapest route) thanks in advance for any help
-
Thanks a lot that def. Gives me a starting point hopefully I can handle it. Gotta get started on that next week along with the oil leaks. Do you have any opinions on a 3" lift like I said thinking about the hellcreek since it comes with full rear pack instead of AAL like all the others I've seen just wondering what their packs do to ride comfort and towing capacity?
