  1. Yeah, I'm on my fourth 2.5 MJ now, and I've never had that doohickey in my valve cover. A nipple goes in there, with a vacuum line to the throttle body. Unless somehow you have a carbureted engine, then I don't know!
  2. man, what a fantastic job. I just used the Purple Power and some pressure to do my underhood, and put the engine back in -- I feel ashamed! LOL You put in all new hard lines...supplier? Did you do all the bends/unions yourself??
  3. the evaporative cannister/charcoal cannister? Try car-part.com and just look up a 2.5 cylinder engine locally. That's the way to start. Purolator still makes a filter for the cannister ....yes, I bought one.
  4. Got the new engine/trans in this weekend. Have to drill holes/fab a mount for the new clutch master cylinder and finish buttoning things up. Should be ready for a first start soon. One question on the radiator. I got a good aluminum replacement radiator from a local shop, who deemed my old rad finished. The stock rad was bolted down from the top on the two flanges, and had a rod running from the center bottom to the front fascia for a little extra support. This rad bolts right in on top, but is touching the frame on the passenger side bottom. Side by side, the rads were identical - scrapped the old one already. Is it OK to contact the frame? Should I lift it up a bit? Any ideas -- anyone run into this in replacing radiators? Thanks Tom
  5. Ah! Good call. There's nothing on the 2000 ax-5 for the shift light that I noticed. I'll just cut that little ol wire ;) I think the bulb was burned out anyway! Thanks. What's funny, though is that the end of the sensor you CAN'T see, screwed into the trans, has a ball at the other end, and it's spring loaded, you can push it in a bit and it pushes back out. I wouldn't think the shift light worked like that.
  6. Hey guys, my 87 ax-5 had two threaded connectors into the side of the passenger side housing. The foremost one was the backup light switch. I don't know what the aftmost one was for, but the replacement 2000 XJ AX5 I'm putting in doesn't have a hole for it. Here is a picture of the sensor or whatever it is that I took out of the trans. What is it?! Tom
  7. Thanks. I rented the second kit you describe, but the Autozone (OEM) kit half moons didn't fit right around the pulley and the puller, so I took it back. Got a puller from a local store with two arms that grab in the same place the half moon does, and a thrust screw. THAT got it off. Thanks for the reply! Tom
  8. I'm trying to get the PS pulley off to put on my new PS pump (and so I can send Bryan the old pump!). I borrowed the puller from Autozone, of course they didn't know how it works. When I figured out how it works, it DOESN'T work with these pulleys, because the angle is too steep. Anyone know how to get these off, or does anyone have a serp belt PS pulley lying around for a 2.5? :)
  9. bump for help.... :beerhead:
  10. not to change the subject, wolfpack, but check your private messages, I have a a new low pressure switch for you.
  11. Thanks! a/c people? 2.5 people? :)
  12. I had the same problem, and for my rebuild bit the bullet and bought a new one. There's a guy on ebay selling I think repro ones, they're a really nice fit, prepare to spend about $45. Comes with gasket though! Tom
  13. I took a break from it this weekend, but this line was to the bottom of the cannister. The two vacuum lines on top are there and intact, there was a broken off plastic line on the bottom, I don't know where it's supposed to come from. Anyone on the other questions? Thanks Tom
  14. I had an 01 TJ that started to veer all over the highway. When I checked the front end a link was broken. They really DO something under there, there's no debate. The original poster should look on jeepsunlimited.com. The TJ's had the same links as the MJ, and people are always selling them and their suspensions cheap when they do mods.
  15. So it begins, pulled the drivetrain today. Only casualty is bending the passenger side motor mount brace. I loosened them up and it got caught on the way out. I 'spose I can bent that back into shape. Questions: 1-The a/c only has 2 thin wires going to it, one had no connector or way to disconnect it, so I had to cut it. I figure I'm going to replace the compressor anyway (already did the condenser, drier, and low pressure switch - why stop now?). What was the right way to do this? LOL 2-I'm replacing all sensors. I didn't buy a new TPS, I guess I should, but I'm not sure if they come calibrated, or if you have to calibrate them? 3 - Going from 87 AX-5 trans to '00 AX-5 trans. The passenger side on my 87 has 2 threaded connectors. The forward one has a female pigtail, and the rearward one has 2 contacts, no wire. I assume one is for the backup lights. What's the other for? The 00 trans only has the one connector, the one with about 10" of wire and a female pigtail at the end. 4- The bottom of the charcoal cannister had a cut off pipe that just pointed straight down. What's supposed to be there? What does it connect to? 5- The engine stopped running, it was pretty beat, but it wasn't catastrophic. Just so I don't get the souped up 2.5 in there and have it not start, is there any way to test the ECM to make sure it's functional? Sorry for all the questions, I just want to get this right. I have some buddies coming in a couple of weekends to help with the install, I want to clean up the bay and repair/replace anything that's not right. Thanks! Tom
  16. OK now I'm really confused. The cross reference shows a standard ignition part # tx-49. I ordered and got one of these today ($30 shipped) and it looks like the picture below. It doesn't look like the sensor threaded into my manifold! What is this part? Jeff the Niehoff # you gave me has apparently been superceded- - can't find it anywhere. Any thoughts? Thanks Tom
  17. Thanks, Jeff. Been there, done that with breaking things off. The whole engine is out, so if there's any problems, I'll have good access. Even got a spare intake! I bought the MAT online, saw a picture. It's not what I have. Someone just threaded in another CTS! So I've got two. Now I'll have one of each. Thanks Tom
  18. Thanks, Jeff. Any idea what part #? The MAT sensor and the coolant temperature sensor look IDENTICAL, and have the same connector. :???:
  19. No, that's the temp sending unit for the gauge or idiot light. These sensors are on the top and side (driver's side) of the intake manifold.
  20. OK, as I collect parts and read on my engine swap before the day is here, I noticed there are two very similar temperature sensors, one on top, and one on the side of the intake manifold of the 2.5L. Are they the same part? I'm replacing all sensors when I do this swap, so there will be (I HOPE) no guesswork when it's time to turn her over! Thanks! Tom
  21. Thanks, guys. When I went out and measured my shroud, it's actually 18", so I will most likely return the fan I have and get an 18" job, for easier fitment.
  22. Hey guys, Hey guys- I bought a 16", 1400 CFM "pusher" fan from Advance Auto, along with a programmable relay. Is this enough CFM for a four banger, and would you all recommend installing it as a pusher, in front of the condenser, or reverse the blades an polarity, and have it as a "puller" behind the radiator? Would I need a shroud (the stock one) in either or both cases? If anyone has done this, thanks in advance! Tom
  23. It should, but you may have to run an extender. Usually when you buy a new clutch, you get the PP, clutch, throwout bearing, pilot bearing, and the alignment too. I paid $130 for mine. $50 for the slave. I don't know if you can even get the pivot ball and fork new. You have an AX-5 out of a 2002? 2002 what? Last year for the XJ was '01. Sorry - 2000 XJ with the 2.5/ax-5. I wanted a lower mileage trans with the external slave -- nothing really WRONG with my trans, just well-worn. My plan is to put the engine/trans together OFF the car, then hoist them up and in, then attach the transfer case. I guess I'll know if I need new plumbing or an extender once everything is in place. I'm new with manual transmissions, so there will be some dumb questions -- thanks for the help thus far, as I track down parts.
  24. So I'm going to need a new clutch, pressure plate too I guess, fork and pivot ball, as well as a new front bearing retainer, and slave cylinder. Anything else? Will the external slave bolt up to my existing plumbing? Thanks Tom
