Future 1986 Comanche Owner
lil_loco replied to Dangileri's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I'd be weary on the long hauls. It's not that the v6 is so horrid but fuel WILL be not efficient the hp is roughly the same as an i4 and when they go they will leave you stranded. Also on a 29 year old truck unless it was babied or rebuilt I'd be prepping to swap in anything else. But that's the easy part. It's finding a solid chassis that's painful. -

The 2.8 could always be swapped out ;) -
Backwards Math - How Much Lift?
lil_loco replied to lil_loco's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
It spat out the shaft on the road. Pics ares on the driveway. I'm going to do a full fluids reset before driving it again. My luck is as good as it is bad. The d44 can be rebuilt I only chewed the teeth of the crown and pinion gears and 3.55 are easy finds. I'll likely have to trade a truck detail case of brew and food for the install but I'm cool with that. And it's cheaper than setting up an 8.8 with new brakes etc The shackles were put in after the axle was set up so the angles should improve if they are removed and balanced with 4.5" springs vs the 6.5" in front now. Thoughts? -
I've sold one before for 3500$ but it came back to me abandoned. Like a curse or blessing depending on how you cut it.

Will pay shipping for one. Can't find anywhere up here. Need the engine bracket(s) to mount an a.c. compressor on my 86 i4. Anyone got one that will work or can get one from your local yard? Thanks in advance

Sounds sweet. And I agree never sell and preserve her well. I feel the same about my 86.

Backwards Math - How Much Lift?
lil_loco replied to lil_loco's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Well at least I figured out what caused the rear to lock up and pull out the drive shaft. Apparently it was without lube..... but never any evidence of leaking so who knew to check? Killed a beautiful D44 (posi?)... ha and I was thinking I had a 35 :( Picking up an 8.8 tomorrow. Might think about rebuilding the 44 but too cheap. -
Backwards Math - How Much Lift?

Thanks for identifying that for me :) Would it be better to swap back the shackles to a shorter length vs undoing the pack? What's the advantage of each shackle vs leafs? The pack is actually not clipped together it seems (going to have to fix that) so labour wise I guess it won't make a difference on which part of the rear to swap but strength wise maybe? What about hinge point?.... still trying to figure out what caused the drive shaft to pull out it wasn't the first run the truck had at that height. Thanks -

That might be a great suggestion! So if I'm running ax4/NP207 what specs should I be looking for? Is the yoke you linked the correct one? -

Don't it though lol -
Long story short. I think my MJ got monkeyed with too much through the several hands that have been on it through the years. The other day we went for a trip into town where I took a reasonable turn that caused some lean in the suspension and next thing we heard a nasty squeal as my rear end locked up and the driveshaft was found to be spat out from the tcase. Spring wrap may have had some involvement but no apparent damage seen. This is what I know: SOA, 7 leafs in the pack and those are definitely not stock shackles. The front I think are 6.5inch springs with adjustable high clearance arms but even then I am just guessing. Measuring and poor memory recalls its roughly 7-8inches from top of tire to bottom of factory flare at the front (left sits 1.75inch lower than right) and at back its something like 11-13inches from top of tire to bottom of factory flare (again sits 1.75inches lower on left). It sat near 2.5 years since the last lift was done so some awkward settling may have occured.... How do I figure this out oh great MJ Gurus.... When the truck broke down good side profile on 285-75-16 mud kings. Cop thought it was a Toyota unknown according to the dispatch for tow truck. Driveshaft wired up looks like a dogs uknowwhat.... Shackle definitely not stock SOA D35 7-leaf pack unknown Just another shot of the rear suspension setup So to recap, how much lift do you think I have and what would have caused the truck to lock up the rear and spit out its drive-shaft Thanks for your help folks :)

A/c Retrofit In An 86 2.5L?
lil_loco replied to lil_loco's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I'm worried that the 86 has such year specific parts could it be backwards compatible? That's a big issue with the TJ 1999 only was compatible with 1999 :( -

A/c Retrofit In An 86 2.5L?

Condensors ares like rads and lines are like any line I don't think I'd want to buy used too many headaches ahead. I'll check out the vintage air option. Being in Ontario I was lucky enough to find an 86 and should have bought a lotto ticket when I found two -

Cool I retrofitted a TJ before but those ares dime a dozen. Just got to find another 86 xj. Jeep driver - do you mean 88 YJ? -
Hey folks I tried to run a search but no success. Has anyone retrofitted ac into their 86 with the i4 2.5l? What should I be looking for (shopping list) to make it happen? I checked out jeep air but they don't have any kit or decent lists for the Cherokee or Comanche just wranglers (don't know why they advertise they have a.c. for all jeeps if that's the case) Thanks ;)

*ahem* ....wouldnt still have that 88 would you?... :dunce:

Thanks :) I am quite happy with my fleet. the work begins.... after I got the 86 into my garage it is going to get moved across town to start the process... Just hope there is space for it when I get it back. final plan: The (black) 86 is getting 4.10 D30/35s which I have to go pickup but its a pretty much done deal and donating its D30 3.55 to the (white) 91 which will also get a D44 3.55 during its 4x4 convert (of course after I get it safety'd/certified, e-tested and insured etc). I have all the parts just need to round up the trucks. I have arranged the (red) 89 as payment once I strip all I want out of it for this hefty axle swap/4x4 convert job and it will take at least a couple months to do as a here and there project. I might toss on a 6" kit if a nicely used one becomes available onto the 91 to compensate...lols. but the plan is final so here it goes....

tomorrow I attempt to make indoor space to begin the work.... aka cleaning out the garage. what a good way to spend a snow day. also one of the few domestic things I will ever do.

tonneau cover...What fits the MJ?
lil_loco replied to HKB3's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
seeing that last detail pic made me think... I might go to the fabric store and make an attempt at being domestic by making one from scratch... velcro, vinyl... seems like that is all Ill need.
