A fusible link is just that; when it fries it opens up continuity-wise. You need a meter on the ohms scale to check continuity or a test light as a minimum.

Swaping in a newer gauge set 97+ ?????
HOrnbrod replied to wranglercory's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Here's an old NAXJA post from our very own Eagle. Sounds reasonable to me. Yet others say you MUST use the correct sender for your year, either the 86-90 or the 91-92. I don't really know, but in eyeballing the schematic I see no reason why the newer sender won't work if you reverse the potentiometer wires. But it will not be completely accurate because the pot ohm values are different (88 vs. 105 ohms). Maybe Eagle will chime in in this. -
Swaping in a newer gauge set 97+ ?????

ah, sorry...it's not the normal sensors that are + ground, i believe it's thefuel tank sending unit which is + ground. or some other wiring thing, i can't recall, but IIRC the wires are switched or something along that line. Yes, the polarity reversal for the fuel senders started in the 1991 models. -
Swaping in a newer gauge set 97+ ?????

Correct except for the + ground statement. Also the 97+ XJs are OBDII, so you will need an entire wiring harness and a PCU swapped in too. Plus sensors. Big job......... -
You're probably right, but there was current flow to ground, a lot of it, and it could backfeed in weird ways, like to the computer, etc. Hopefully it just scorched the hood and nothing blew.

It only takes a millesecond or so to fry things when you apply a dead short to the battery. You most likely took out your fusible link in the + battery cable. I believe the Renix fuel pump is also on a fusible link. First thing is to replace the vattery then go from there. This link should help on the fusible link repair. Hopefully the Renix guys will chime in as to their exact locations. http://www.autozone.com/az/cds/en_us/0900823d/80/15/3e/6c/0900823d80153e6c/repairInfoPages.htm

Are you saying that if you don't have this plastic cover thingy over the battery, the hood will contact the + terminal of the battery?? Good Gawd, I hope you're not saying that....... :huh???:

New to here and I wanted to show off my comanche
HOrnbrod replied to JpComancheKid's topic in The Pub
Me too. Looks great and an excellent buy. But how did the PO keep the body so fine in MN? Must have barned it during the winter. -
You need some nice classic Marchal 750's up there Brent.

Windshield wiper help
HOrnbrod replied to Ben-88Comanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yeah, like fiatslug87 says. Sounds like the wipers were re-installed when the motor was not parked correctly. Pull the wipers then turn them on for a couple of cycles, then off so they park. Then re-insert the wipers as below: Image Not Found -
KY works better. Maybe it won't be too bad for the gas though w. all highway driving and the 2.5L. Have a safe trip.
-
Okay, then you will need the newer pedal (or mod your existing). On the 91-92 MJs you can use the existing pedal & brake switch w. no mods.

bad switch vs blower motor
HOrnbrod replied to jpdriver1's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Could be either or most likely a partially shorted resistor pack that drops the voltage for the blower speed control. Best way to start is to disco the motor connector and temp hook it directly to the battery. If it runs well on high speed, it's most likely the resistor pack, about $24 at Rock Auto. These go bad often. http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/raframecatalog.php?carcode=1180156&parttype=6557&a=FRc1180156k1140277 -
X2222. Unistrut is great stuff. Back in the day we used it to built cable ladders, equipment frames, platforms, etc. in communication facilities in high earthquake areas. It comes in a variety of sizes and materials, even stainless and fiberglass now. And with all the accessories available, like spring nuts, tie rings, corner brackets, etc. you can do anything with it. Never occured to me to use it in the truck bed. But I will now.

Yeah, I eat at Dreamland quite a bit (one of my daughters is attending UA in Tuscaloosa), but the Lynchburg, VA place was even better. I think they opened the place up during the Civil War  Wonder if it's still there.....
-
Now barbecue's a different story Jeff. VA has some of the best barbeque in the world, especially in the Shenandoah areas. There uses to be a place on 460 in Lynchburg that when you came down the mountain you could see the clouds of hickory smoke coming out of the place on a clear day. Best I've ever had. Place looked like hell, but served some great chow. Fried chicken wasn't too bad either.

Since the 1997+ XJs don't have the water valve, I eliminated it and plugged the vacuum line. No difference in the cab temps.

Anyone know what this grill is from?
HOrnbrod replied to fiatslug87's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
They are goats just rearing up eating the branches. I asked the seller of the Waggy grille truck (it's on Ebay) a question and also asked about the goats. :D -
Agree w. all Jeff except the sweet tea - UGGGH. Prefer H2O because ya can't hardly get unsweet tea here. Hard to find good VA collards here either - miss that. But the 'Bama fried chicken beats the crap out of the VA varieties hands down.

What year is your MJ? You might not need the pedal assembly.

HOrnbrod replied to 88stroker's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If you send the 8-digit tag number(s) I could probably cross it. Should be 8953xxxx. -
I only checked for the 92 and below XJs/MJs - should have clarified that.
