  1. Filling the back side of the seal with grease also helps to keep the spring from becoming dislodged when you're installing, thanks for the reminder. Wow! that balancer was toast! It looks like maybe someone screwed a bolt for the puller too far in and hit the cover?
  2. Its a little tricky with the crank snout poking out, but maybe?
  3. This is the first time that I've run into this, but my power steering pump started leaking from between the pump and reservoir. Normally, I'd just buy a new pump, but I've had terrible luck with both reman pumps and new Chinese pumps and I think those are the only options. This pump is quiet and seems to work well. Basically, there are just 2 clips that slide off and the two just pull apart. There's a little tab that needs to be bent up until you get it started, then they slide right off. The clips are different, the shorter side goes towards the plastic reservoir. The o ring seems to be a metric 3mm section with and around a 14 or 15mm. My kits didn't have any that thick and the local ACE was out so I ended up using one from a low mileage reman pump that had noisy bearings. I have also heard that a malfunctioning cap can cause pressure build up and leaks, so I went ahead and threw on a new cap.
  4. I was feeling kind of lazy and decided to change the front cover seal without pulling the timing cover. The hardest part was getting the old seal out, I bought the Lisle seal puller below, but it just couldn't quite do the job. I was able to finagle my standard puller in to finish the job. The Boa Constrictor metal band clamp works great to keep the engine from turning while loosening or tightening the crank bolt. Installation would have been a bit more difficult without the Jeep special tool, you'd need to find a big socket or a piece of tubing. I'd recommend buying the FelPro set with the sleeve, it's only about $5.00 more than buying the bare seal. If your damper has a groove worn into it, you install the sleeve over it. I elected to buy a new Dorman damper. I've hammered balancers on with a block of wood between the hammer before, but that's probably not happening with the radiator installed. My Proform installer "for small and big block Chevys" worked perfectly.
  5. Thanks! It was a pretty neat trip, I wasn't sure what to expect on America's Loneliest HWY. Not much traffic on 50 or 375, so that was nice. My wife gets a little discouraged sometimes, but hearing comments like that definitely helps!
  6. It looks like Western Shoshone. They are supposed to be some of the best preserved pictographs. Yes the gate is unfortunate, but unfortunately there's a lot of disrespectful people out there. https://travelnevada.com/indian-culture/toquima-cave/
  7. True, but we get more time off to play than many people and I'm grateful for that. 4 day work weeks are great as well, but sometimes getting up for that 10 hour shift is rough!
  8. Thanks! This ones a little shorter, but still some good stuff to come. I'm kinda sad that it over and it's back to work another 4 months until the next big trip. I am pretty happy that I don't have so spend all of my free time working on it although I do need to find time to paint it one of these days.
  9. Part 2 is out if anyone is interested. Thanks!
  10. Good to know, thanks!
  11. What PN slave did you get? if I look up a 94 XJ at O'Reilly it shows a cs2326 that looks to be plastic. a 97 TJ shows the same cs2326 as well.
  12. Here's the block off plate that I made. https://comancheclub.com/topic/72114-renix-egr-block-off-plate/
  13. Here's my home made EGR block off plate that I had to make in a hurry when my EGR valve failed right before a trip. It's sandwiched between the EGR valve and the manifold, so once it rusts a bit, it should blend in pretty well. I made a gasket from FelPro high temp gasket material since I didn't have one and neither did the local parts stores. It's kind of difficult to work with because of the thick metal layer inside, I used a die grinder to cut it. I'm sure something could probably be matched up at a good parts store. If anyone has a good EGR valve they would like to sell, please PM me.
  14. It definitely adds to the sense of adventure! I figured worst case it's a good excuse to buy a "new" truck to tow it home. 😉
  15. Heather just uploaded the first part of last weeks adventure in our 1989 XJ. For those that didn't see my previous posts, our friends gave us the XJ when they moved from N. CA to Ely NV about 6 months ago. It had been off the road for 10 years after a botched engine swap by a previous owner. We had planned to go visit them and I thought it would be neat to surprise them by showing up in the XJ. It was a lot more work than anticipated, but we made it. 1985 miles with an average MPG of 17.97. We reached elevations as high as 9000 FT. I was a bit leery after the ignition Control module failed on my first drive to work and the EGR valve got stuck open two days before we left, but it was a successful trip and our friends were very surprised and excited when we rolled up in their Jeep! There will be more to come and please consider subscribing if you enjoy, (YouTube doesn't pay a cent until you have 1000 subscribers, no matter how many views you get). Thanks for following along!
  16. https://blockoffplates.com/collections/egr-block-off-plates-jeep https://midwestjeepwillys.com/3221283p.html The shape looks pretty standard among makes? The gasket that the 4.0 calls for just shows fitting 4.0, 4.2, 2.5 and 5.9 but who knows.
  17. Not sure what you've got going on, but the stock radiator should have a spot for the fan sensor in the tank. Sometimes there is a problem when people swap to the later radiators to eliminate the pressure tank because some do not have the fan sensor provision. I used Performance Radiator and it accepted the factory 1988 sensor and eliminated the pressure tank. https://shop.performanceradiator.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=7809
  18. Only upon change of ownership here. If I can find an operational one or clean mine, I will put it on though.
  19. Well, we just returned home after 1985 miles in the XJ! The only issues were a failed radiator fan relay, ( I had a spare), flat tire, (plugged It and had patched later) and a broken windshield, (4 weeks old).🙄 The previous owners that gave it to us were very surprised when we showed up in it and happy to see it on the road!
  20. We made it 7 hours yesterday with no problems. Another 5 to go!
  21. That's in the plans, we should have 3 or 4 days there. Thanks.
  22. Thanks! From the N. CA coast across "The Loneliest HWY" rt50 to Ely NV. Then we will hit the Extraterrestrial HWY and go to Tonopah and Goldfield before heading back home. Our friends moved to Ely and gave us the 1989 XJ when they left. They got it as a non runner and it hadn't run in 10 years. We had already made plans for a visit and I figured it would be cool to show up in it without telling them. Hopefully, that won't turn out to be a bad idea. 😬
