:agree: Bash the fords not people on the forum, regardless of there short comings. (and horrible decision making skills :peek: ) And this is a discussion board.........we are discussing, not "taking the bait".

My friend tried to follow me (back in high school) in my 89 XJ with his 94ish exploder with the modified pinto tranmisson. We had to trailer his junk home. It was a low mile JUNK ford with slap it together FORD team ignorance. Plus it rusted in the rockers worse than a now 20 yr old XJ. Before I appreciated vehicles my XJ jumped terraces, tore up fields, was parked high centered on a snow bank with all four wheels turning.......not to mention made a great bed in high school when taken out the ladies Also TMI(Too much info) Nailed the first lucky lady in an XJ :brows:

Went to the salvage yard today to get some exercise. Guess what name badge was on 90% of the vehicles in the yard (ford), and what name badge was on 6 other vehicles in the entire HUGE yard...........................Sucks finding parts, but makes you proud to know they aren't being picked apart in the boneyard. Toyotas are very reliable, and I know they have plants in the US now blah blah blah. Having said that AMC/Jeep have been American made(put together at least) from the get go. :USAflag:  Kinda like the guy who buys the new corvette and shows how much power it has but can't figure out how to add wiper fluid. What money buys you doesn't make you, it's the skills you develop as you go. My MJ with its V8 powerplant that I fabbed in myself will smoke the 35's and I feel comfortable doing it because it is my blood, sweat, and beers that went into it. Maybe one day you will be back, but at your age all I can say is :wavey: This isn't mean't to be bashing by the way, if the original poster returns. Just don't post anything negative towards our hobby on here unless you can handle the feedback. If you buy another MJ down the road, I am sure this forum will once again be more than happy to help.

Not this guy only, but I love it when people buy second hand used stuff regardless of what it is and are disappointed when it doesn't behave like brand new. Vehicles are like people, we are made of the same components, but some seem to wear out faster than others. Maybe I misunderstood, but are you writing off the entire jeep brand over a 20+ year old vehicle that you probably bought with 123,000 miles on from a guy who got his motor oil second hand from his older brother? At any rate best of luck to you. :ack:

I knew you would catch it first, just giving you crap and passing the time while my newborn refuses to sleep.

Says the guys from Sweet Home Alabama, and Colorado baby. :peek:

Started fabbing up some lower A pillar brackets for some driving/fog lights wrangler style .

I guess I have never in person seen a column shift MJ(not saying much). And owning several XJs of the same era, I guess I assumed that the autos were also floor shift, in common with the XJ.
-
This gave me a great idea for how I could mount some lights on my topper, and rob yet another part from the parts cherokee.
-
:dunno: I have seen three trucks all with the cherokee style floor shifters and bucket seats. Guess I have never given it any thought.

If I was 10 years younger or 20 years older I would love to have something like this as a DD. I haven't seen many column shift trucks.

AMC V-8 in an 86 MJ Any suggestions
pilotblake replied to az86jeep's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I have a V8 in my MJ (different engine family) :dunno: . Do your research and weigh in on your fab skills and make a decision. I would love to have had a 401 in my MJ, but with the work I have already laid forward am looking for a decent LS1. It is the little things that get you every time. -
There are better media options for rust than baking soda. Baking soda is great because where normal media removes debris by removing the surface and usually some of the under material, soda blasting media explodes when it hits the surface, so the explosion itself removes the stuff you want gone. Rust just takes longer than paint to be removed by soda media. I am not a professional blaster, maybe these guys have a new technique.
-
Soda blasting also leaves a residue that inhibits rust  . But if they tell you it is good for rust they might be looking to charge you extra hours. :fs2:

Soda blasting is awesome. I used it to scuff up the paint in areas of my fiberglass topper I couldnt reach. I also used it to scuff up some aluminum rims for painting. Not to mention an old merc super 5 outboard. Sodium Bicarbonate is not good for rust removal, but paint and soft metals it is awesome. Also environmentaly friendly .

You win some and you lose some. I think if what is underneath isn't rusted to @#$% you should be satisfied with what you ended up with. Some will find a diamond in the rough for $500 others are lucky to get a rust bucket for $500. The D44 would still make this a decent buy for $500 if the rest of the truck is straight.

It is legal till the bottle breaks in shipping :chillin: Bubble wrap is goood.

I vote no. Paint it rattle can flat, and keep touching it up if you don't like the scratches. Then down the road if you, or the next owner of the truck wants to put a decent coat of paint on it, it could be done. It's like painting the walls in our house black. YOU might think it looks cool, but it is a :fs1: for the next guy, or you when you decide you don't like it anymore.

I have the Stihl 290 Farm Boss. With a dull blade you still have plenty of power to spare. My grandpa has a stihl saw that he has had for who knows how long, and has gotten its share of use over the years. Starts and runs great, alittle heavier than the newer ones but better oiling systems.

My D35 with a aussie locker and 35s behind a V8 is being "abused". It's days are numbered I am sure, but haven't found the right price on a replacement yet. Using a vehicle to haul things heavier that the truck itself is a danger to everyone else on the road. I know he was doing the best he could with what he had, but just because you can doesn't always mean you should. man I must be getting old.

I have your old bed blasted and primed, but yet to get to the patch panels. Congrats on the honor. Next time you have a connection to some old college fab equipment give me a ring, and I will gladly come up again and see the progress. Does look good. -
I live by pay it forward. We just had twins, and money is short but to skip an outing or two to help someone else is what it is all about.

On in black. Not crazy about the double bar.
