i agree with everything the above guy said about diesel over motorcycle... you can always learn motorcycle on your own time as well, diesel can be a b*@$£ to learn.. also look into anything HVAC as everyone wants heat in the winter and AC in the summer! you'll never be out of a job and most likely the one everyone calls for sidejobs on the weekends! good luck!

here's my prior thread: http://comancheclub.com/topic/37922-motor-swap/?do=findComment&comment=381854 I'm swapping in a HO motor from a 96 while using parts from the renix motor which cruiser54 has nicely made a list of what all is needed instead of me wasting time typing everything, that list is seen here below.. Cruiser’s HO into Renix Swap This swap is easier than some will lead you to believe, generally those who have never done it. Those of us who have done it, like myself, will share with you the things that need to be done for a successful swap. Just think of it as swapping in a long block. The HO and Renix have some differences but none that can’t be overcome very easily. Any HO engine from an XJ or ZJ through 1998 can be used. One running change was that the rear of the head was no longer drilled and tapped for the temperature gauge sender beginning in the 96 model year. The sender can be relocated to the threaded hole in the thermostat housing taken from the HO engine. You’ll have to extend the wire to that location. Some brave souls even drill and tap the HO head for the sender. You will be using the intake and exhaust manifolds from your Renix, along with all your sensors and wiring. Since the intake ports of the HO are slightly different, you use the Renix gasket. Exhaust ports are identical. You will need to use your Renix distributor as it is different than the HO because they use different fuel management systems. The flywheel or flexplate from the Renix must be used so your CPS gets the correct signals. The valve cover from the Renix allows you to keep your CCV system intact and requires no modifications. The HO block will have a plug in the coolant galley on the driver’s side of the block, closest to the front, which needs to be removed so your Coolant Temp Sensor can be installed in it’s place just as it is on the Renix. It requires a 5/16” square drive or a modified 3/8” drive that has been ground down to fit. Do this before installing the engine. As for the knock sensor, which is located just above the oil pan on the driver’s side of the engine about mid way, all the blocks I’ve seen are threaded for it. If not, I’ve heard they may be drilled but not tapped. Tap the hole if that’s the case. i read in my old thread that the pilot bearing may be a pain in the arse to get right? basically I'm wondering what lil POS things I'm gonna run into by swapping this in?? is there any sort of header, intake or any other performance goodies i can throw onto the motor while it is out and being put back together?? the new block is a 96 and the old block is a 87... thanks for any help guys, its appreciated!!!

I need ideas, MANY ideas to make my MJ be heard from a distance and have it feel like a concert on the inside! i love me some SQ with some thump, not a fan of trying to get to 150DB but if it happens, i just hope all the vocals are crisp and clear to my ears as well!! i've got a lot in my mind for what to do to the MJ but i feel like I'm gonna end up with this, because it seems somewhat simple and it should work nicely.. *add some components to the doors (possibly do dual speaker out of some fiberglass?) do they make kick panels for down by the feet? *add tweeters to either the doors or the a pillar's(possibly using an 'A Pillar' single gauge thing and making the hole work with a small tweeter) or possibly do both *put in a decent set of co-ax 5x7's or 6x9's in the B pillar spot... any ideas there? maybe add some 5.25 or 6.5 components in that spot instead? and set the tweeters on top of the box that will be built? *putting in a custom box behind the bench seat with a 12" L7 in the middle *built into the box will be a amp on each side, one for the components and one for the sub, there will also be an distribution block on there for the wiring as well as a capacitor just to keep all the volts level.. i plan on using 0/2 gauge wiring from the battery to the distribution block, from there 4 or 8 gauge to the amps, 14 gauge speaker wire will be ran for the sub and every other speaker in the MJ.. *i plan on running dual batteries and trying to find an high output alternator, so any advice on what batteries to use would be great!?and where to go about finding a 180/200 amp alternator would be great too! as of now, i'm planning on using either the duralast deep cell ones or some interstate deep cells for the batteries, and i have yet to find a good alternator besides the mean green ones... *the head unit i am planning on running is an alpine cda9886, its like 6? years old, if i can find a decent/good flip out screen for a decent price, i will most definitely be picking that up instead... as well as swapping in a PS3 in the slot under the glovebox! *i'm also debating on putting in some 7-12" monitors in the sun visors, as well as adding a back up camera that will pop up on the in dash tv as soon as i put the jeep in reverse(may need to think of how to do that as its a stick!) right now the headliner is out, the fabric was shot! ...of course! so if there's any ideas of a lighting system to put in or any form of sound bar to install, that'd be really helpful too! (i have a sound bar from my '92 XJ and it wouldn't bolt up right without hitting my head!) i'd love to see some photos of any custom car audio that y'all have done to these MJ's, i know i can look on car domain but i figured id go for the source before just being a creeper!! Any insights of what to do, what not to do, what you wish you would've done, all that BS, i'd love to hear it, that way i can do it right instead of doing it twice!!! there's a lot of things i wish i would've done differently on my first MJ, and so far i have not done a single thing wrong to this one, except blow the motor!!

ive had this MJ for over a year and it has never had a working speedo... I'm about to swap the motor and wondering what it'll take to have a speedometer besides my GPS when its all said and done? i was told by the PO that it was a cable from the speedo to the tcase that was what's bad?? its a 4.0/5spd/np231 i believe... any insights on what it could be? could the little gear tooth in the tcase be broken or is it more complex than that?? is there actually a cable that could be bad? ...i doubt it could be that simple!!

its got a ba-10 or ax15, i havent looked at the numbers on it... I'm thinking ax15 as it didnt grind or anything shifting...

lookin for a cherry picker near detroit to do a motor swap... if you wanna lend it to me sweet, if you wanna sell it to me, even better... whatcha got?!?

I'm sure theres a million topics on this, I'm too lazy to read them all so hopefully some of yas can give me constructive criticism instead of destructive... i got an 1987 Jeep MJ from here with the renix 4.0... motor blew up about a month or so after acquiring it.. its in really good shape for the year and i wanna make it run again as i miss my Jeeps!! so basically I'm wondering if i can swap in upto a 99 motor and ECM or is it a PITA to do?? should i look for the pre 91 motor or the 92-99 motor? should i swap on the 99+ intake manifold for better flow? should i put a header onto it? what all would you do if you were about to swap motors?? i hate electronics but can deal with everything else, i will have a friend helping me who loves car electronics so it shouldnt be all too hard... i have swapped 4 Jeep 4.0s in my past, a 92, 94, 99 and 2000... so I'm assuming itll be alot like the '92, fairly simple but will have the renix cooling system right?? basically my questions are what all do i need to look for in swapping the motors? ideally id like to swap in a 92-96 motor and add on a header and the later intake manifold for better power and all that BS... what would you do if you had the chance? The MJ is a DD, pulls trailers and plows snow, so reliability is a must! its one of the work trucks for my landscape company and will be pulling a 6x12 trailer this year... lucky for me it has the D44 and trailer brakes already installed! Thanks for any and all help and advice fellas!!!

Hey all, i got this 88 MJ off here a few months ago, it ran well for a few months then took a $#!&... fouled out all the plugs and doesnt have over 75lbs of psi in any cylinder... time for a new motor in my mind.. anyways, i was wondering what other 4.0 motors i coulld swap in WITHOUT too big of a hassle? i found a 4.0 from a '91 MJ for $225 locally... what all would i need to do to my jeep to get this motor to work in it? I'm sure it can't be as simple as un-doing bolts and swapping everything!? will i need the ecm from the donor vehicle? what else will i need? also while the motor is out, I'm planning on swapping in a header, the 97+ intake manifold and doing all the wear and tear gaskets that typically fail on the 4.0's... what else should i look for and put my attention to? I have swapped 3 motors before, all in XJ's, a '99, a '95 and a '92... none were a renix.. the current MJ is a renix, what all does that mean? what can or can't i swap with my current jeep being a renix motor and the new motor not being a renix motor? it just means its a non ho right? with a open cooling system i believe? never have been 100% as to what a renix motor was and included and meant haha... THANKS FOR ANY AND ALL HELP EVERYONE!!!

shot you a PM..

there werent any last time i was at the pick n pull... anyone? found a few on ebay, and the cheapest is $45!! I'm trying to spend no more than $30!!

Fairly mechanically inclined, have swapped 3 XJ motors in the past 2 years... I know nothing about renix motors tho that's why I figured swapping a motor may be easier than trying to figure out the actual problem... 6ish hours of labor to swap a motor or a lot more in frustration?? Fuel pressure could be the issue as the first time it happened, the fuel light was on, I filled it up and it ran fine... The next day it hated life tho... I will disconnect the exhaust before the cat and see how it runs but the cat appears to be fairly new? Thanks for the insights fellas!

Looking for the dash overlay in woodgrain.. closer to the Detroit area the better!! I had one in my prior MJ, kept it for my XJ and stupidly let it go with it! Someone here has to have one or know of where i can get one!!! Thanks guys!!!

Hey guys, its been a while since ive had a MJ and in the meantime ive had 3 XJs since... all the same but i missed the truck and came across one on here and gl4x4, anyways shes got a issue right now and I'm not sure if its lack of compression or lack of fuel or lack of spark... just hoping that someone else has had the same symptoms as me and can help. ive searched and read up on a few threads but no real luck... The Jeep is a '87 4.0 5spd 4x4, d44/d30.. the issue besides no CEL... I was driving down the highway and its kinda like it started to backfire in a sense, a hiccup if you will, it bogged down and slowed down, won't hold over 2000rpm makes a bunch of loud pops and bangs in the motor, finally died completely about 4 miles down the highway.. it would still drive, will no go over 2000 rpms in any gear and when its in a gear it will drive, it just will not speed up at all. I'm not really sure where to start besides buying a new motor and swapping it in, not too big of a fan of finding the problem and fixing it thing now a days lol! i know its not real descriptive on the issue, but I'm sure if someone else has had this stuff happen to them before that theyd be able to help me pinpoint my problem!! thanks guys in advance!!!

i need a speedo cable and a decent somewhat rust free rear bumper for a 87 MJ 4.0, 5spd 4x4 if it makes a difference, anyone got somethin or know where i can get the cable??
-
prolly the starter. whack the solenoid with a hammer.
-
i havent driven the dang thing in a year. i just replaced the coil, ignition control module, cap, rotor plugs and wires and it still won't start. its gettin gas but won't make a spark. I'm thinkin the CPS but not 100% sure... murrays has them for $45 good deal or not?
-
so i went boggin in a corn field then 3 days later stopped to get gas, turned it back on and it backfires, doesnt idle and shakes alot, when i give it gas it gasps for air and when i let off the gas it backfires and dies.... ideas? ive searched but I'm retarded when it comes to that stuff. 88 4.0 253k... I'm guessing idle air controller or tps? not too literate when it comes to engines.

it cuts out while driving, like it loses power then jumps itself back to running order, itll do it for a minute then be fine for about 5 mins...
