  1. Does my 86 Comanche 2wd have 2 piece front disk brakes? I've asked before and was answered, but I forgot. I used the "search" section, with no results. The person that answered befroe said 2wd = ??? 4wd = ??? Thanx, Jim
  2. I just replaced the valve cover gasket in my Comanche...2.5L. Sticking out of the top near the front is the pcv valve....what do you call the "valve" sticking out near the rear of the cover??? I want to be armed with knowledge when I see the idiot at the parts store
  3. Finally broke down and brought it to a shop for a diagnostic. They tested the batt. & alt. Said they were both good. Said it's probly all the oil leaking on the connections & the starter. Wanted to rebuild the entire truck, I said "how much do I owe you" Replaced the starter today....what a pain that was. Turned the key and it fired up like a new truck. Valve cover gasket is next, then some engine de-greasing.
  4. Could a bad starter make the "battery" light glow sometimes? It's usually off, but sometimes it will glow, then go off. When the battery needed to be replaced it came on as soon as I started the truck and stayed bright till I got home.
  5. I really don't know about the altenator. A last resort was going to be to pull it off and have it tested. Could a weak altenator make it start like that? When the one in my FSJ went, it just died on the road.
  6. O.K., evryone who ownes a "newer" Jeep knows the sound the starter makes, that high pitched fast crank sound. Well mine is starting like it has a dying battery. It will sometimes crank once, then twice, then sort of crank untill it starts. Sometimes it starts fairly normal. And lately the "battery" light has glowed for a while, then goes out. The battery is pretty new, Dec. 08 The starter is fairly new, my friend replaced it a while before I bought it The cables & wires look fine Could the starter be going????
  7. Out of nowhere, the truck is really slow starting....in the morning it cranks REAL SLOW, but does start. It has always had that classic high pitched, crank for a bit sound that is typical for these animals. But now I wonder if it will start. I replaced the battery 11/08. My friend who sold me the truck said he replaced the starter a couple/ few years ago (reliable friend). I've posted a few times recently about cooling issues & replaced the 4 freeze plugs on the side of the block. That has been resolved. What the heck could be causing the starting problem??? Maybe altenator??? I don't want to nickle & dime myself to death replacing parts. It's an 86 Comanche 2.5l 4cyl. Thanks guys. :huh???:
  8. Have I ever said you guys rock? Thanks for the info.
  9. I need to replace the brake rotors & pads on my 86 Comanche. When I go to look up prices, there is listed one piece, with studs, or two piece that slides over the existing studs. Does anyone know what an 86 2WD came with? I know I could take a wheel off & check, but I'm feeling a little lazy.....thanks.
  10. I have an 87 Cavalier with the 2.8 MFI. Last October it wouldn't start, and fuel was peeing from it. I couln't afford to fix it untill now. I replaced the fuel pressure regulator, and it starts o.k. The problem is the check engine light glows now. Would that be caused by sitting so long & the battery discharging? :hmm:
  11. :wall: I seem to always omit the year, or engine. It's an 86, 2.5, 4 cyl. I missed one bolt by the firewall, now the manifold is loose, however part of the braket that held the power steering pump seems to be in the way...oh and connected to the motor mount? This is getting ugly fast. It also looks like I have to disconnect the throttle cable and whatever else pops up as I proceed.
  12. So, I've got all the bolts off and it still on there pretty tight. Does the exaust have to come off too?? I hope not, never had a good time with rusty exaust parts. :fs1:
  13. You are the man....thank you
  14. Does anyone have any pics of the location of the bottom bolts on the manifold of a 4 cyl? I've got the four you can see on the top loosened & ready to remove, but there are supposed to be two more on the bottom. I can't see them. Thanx
  15. Does anyone have any advice that will help me remove the manifold from my 86 2.5 four cyl.? The front welch plug nuked, and it looks like I need to get the manifold out of the way to get to it. Probly not a bad idea to replace the rest of them while it's apart. Any advice ,pics will be very helpfull. Are there any bolts under the manifold(s) or just the ones on top? Thanx alot people, you always have great advice & feedback.
  16. I did get to that link, it has an awesome writeup on replacing the plug(s). The only thing is, he already has the intake/exaust manifold off & it's a six cyl. I can clearly see that the front plug on my 4 cyl. must have nuked...it's gone. I'm starting to remove the manifold, but I'm going blind, just un hooking & unbolting what looks like holds it to the block. Taking a lot of notes & pics to help re-assemble. Maybe make a good DIY write up. :typing: I'll be posting to see if anyone has good info on the removal.
  17. Is that the proper name of freeze plug? It looks like that may very well be the problem. The coolant seems to be pooled up & leaking pretty much just below the intake/exaust manifold. Looks like it will be a real fun ride removing all that stuff to get to the plug :headpop:
  18. Yes, it is the 2.5 four cylinder, that info might help. No, that isn,t the bottom hose, that's the hose from the air filer to the exaust manifold to warm up the air. I got it at an auto parts store.
  19. So, today driving to work after about 3 miles??? my temprature light glowed bright. Maybe not the best idea, but I turned around and beat it for home. Smoke coming from under the hood I made it home. Long story short... previously I had an antifreese leak. The top hose had a squirt comming out. I replaced top & bottom hoses, both main heater hoses. Then all the hoses got hot, except the bottom radiator hose. So, I replaced the thermostat. Same deal, ran a hose thrugh the radiator, it flowed good. Still same deal. Sent it to the garage. They said the heater regulator valve was ok, the water pump was ok, the heater core was ??? but water flowed right thrugh it. They ended up replacing the radiator...yea, I could have done that! So, truck runs excellent for a couple of weeks, awesome heat (it sucked before). Last few days there was no heat... we come back to today's adventure. After work I look at it, there is antifreeze stains on the hood & in the engine bay. I open the radiator, it looks empty (yea, I cooked it driving home) however, when I poured water into the new radiator, it was majorly peeing on the ground somewhere near the block. Maybe a freeze plug??? But still, even after the "mechanic" "fixed" it, the lower hose was always cool....still a coolant block???? :huh???: Here's kinda where it was peeing
  20. Well, today I disconnected the bottom radiator hose, let the radiator drain & ran the hose thrugh the cap. The water came thrugh pretty good & clean. So I re-connected, filled the radiator and....same problem...only the top hose gets hot. Time for the pros!
  21. Ouch....do you think flushing it might help...or is it death to the radiator??? Is it ok to drive fairly short distances? It's about 15 miles to work.
  22. Last weekend I replaced upper & lower radiator hoses. I did the heater hoses too. I didn't replace the thermostat. This weekend I did. I still have the same problem that made me want to replace the thermostat....the top radiator hose is hot...the bottom one is not, either are the 2 heater hoses. When I filled it with antifreeze, I had the heater running, and the engine. Any sugusstions??? Thanx  BTW, it's the 2.5 liter engine

    2WD Rant

I LOVE my Comanche, but today with our snowstorm, I made it 3/4 of the way to work. When I started up the hill.....I just spun....there were 3 other vehicles in the same shape though. Unfortunately my truck is 2WD. I have 3- 5 gallon pails of sand in the bed for traction. The sand is the only way I got out, I thru a few shovel fulls under the rear wheels,I did a K turn...and went home.
  24. I got my truck last Fall. I drove it thrugh last winter, threw in LOTS of firewood, bark mulch & grass clippings. Over the summer, I took it out to see what was underneath...... I thought it looked pretty good. I'd buy one if I got a new truck.
  25. Does anyone know how to remove the plastic "vent" looking thing on the cab behind the door? My pass. side one is loose, and rattles like a %*&%^$&$ when I drive. I want to remove it, glue the cracked part together, and glue it firmly to the cab.
