Did a draw test, didn't find anything.

I have a short somewhere. They replaced the alt, I picked it up. On the drive home, my dash lights and headlights were way brighter than they used to be. And under acceleration the radio and radio display shuts off. Hit the brakes, it comes back on. Wtf?

The shop said after the motor warmed up and the alt was under load the voltage would drop to around 10v.

It's an 88 truck, but the motor/trans is out of a 93 Cherokee. The swap has been in there for a few years. In november I installed 4 offroad lights and a cb. Decided to upgrade to the optima. Everything was fine, then my alt. Went out end of January, I've had problems ever since.

Going nucking futs. Alternator is working, battery charged, drive for about 2 hrs, truck dies. Battery is dead. Alternator is still putting out 14.7. What gives? If the alt is charging, shouldn't the truck run off the alt? Battery is an optima redtop, seems to charge fine. I always thought the battery was there for starting, and everything else ran off the Alternator.

This is the one I'm talking about. I got it for $75. Has anyone ever seen one on an mj or XJ? I'm wondering how it will look?

The shop has it now. They'll fix it, I'll just have to pay.

Well, not even 24hrs later, no mud, no sand , no water....It's dead again. Never had this issue before

Loudly, lol. They are Ultima alts. And they always warrantied them even though they were muddy.

Yeah, they all had lifetime warranties. I'm just tired of changing them out.

I use a car wash down the road that has an undercarriage cleaner. I use the high pressure sprayer, then the auto wash.

Haha...factory mj parts? In Oklahoma? That's funny right there. I'll probably have to make one. Good to know there are factory mounting points though.

Voltage was low, I mean.

All the alts spun freely and put out voltage, just way to low. I might just make a skid for the mud, jeep it out of the river until I can move the alt.

So is it the mud or the water that kills it?

I need to put a splash shield up, but that won't help when the water is up to the headlights.

Ok, In the last month, I've replaced 3 alternators. They seem to collect every ounce of water and mud I go through. All 3 have been full of mud. I take it through mud and a 1-2ft deep river out on our farm and lease land. I love this truck, but I need something that can handle where I go. I'm planning on doing SOA soon with 33's, but i don't know if that will help. Is there any way to waterproof or protect the alt from mud and snow?
