Project "vasi" 1987 Comanche
Usamedic replied to Usamedic's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
Dang, been forgetting to post. Nest is on, fridge and stove mounted. Working on the ac and some little electrical gremlins. Nothing too major -
They are thinner than some of the other years. I am not sure of the changes or when they occurred. Email me pics of your and I'll confirm, or send me your email address and I can send you picks of mine.

Ok. I head into surgery this week. Thought the downtime might work well for some comanche work that I can't do either way. She heads into the paint shop Thursday. She will get new floor pans, bushwackers, paint inside an out, the visor will be painted and installed, the inside of the bed, and the inside of the cab will be shot with linex, and after paint the new hanson bumpers will be mounted. The wildernest is also getting painted to match. Think I'm gonna get the bumpers painted to match the truck. You don't see that much on such sweet bumpers! She might even be worthy of a comanche of the month write up! -
Well, my .02 cents. The rear while it need to be inline or aligned to forward motion has no correlation to the front end. It's actually narrower then the from on many vehicles so that alone could throw you off when measuring. The front end should be measured alone. Who using a tape alone or a the method hornbrod showed you need to make sure that the flat edges your using are sitting on similarly placed lugs or spots on the tire. This is because being on a lug on the left and off the mud lugs on the the right can really throw off your measurements. Additionally with the front end in regards to "toe" , your only concern is that the front of the tires and the rear of the tires are parallel to each other so your measuring the difference between the front and the rear. After getting close, most front end guys will recommend you toe then inward slightly on our front ends, and most for that matter.and when I do it with a tape I usually look for at least 1/4 of an inch when running mud tires. I do this because with tire maker build mud terrain they typically are not as perfect as a standard road tire on as a passenger car. I just reread your post and realized you were not measuring off the rear axles, but past it, using longer boards. If that's the case you were good to go. May be overkill with that length. And I own a sawmill, and boards are not exactly straight so it can throw things off using but it sounds like it worked out fine for you

What was the overall length? Approximate? I ask because I recently ordered a new one from rock auto. When it showed up it was obviously 30" too short. I was able to fiddle with the issues in my old one and make it work. What did you think about the crazy routing on the cable?

Anybody got something? Otherwise gonna go spray in.

Mpg is so dependent on how you drive, and understanding your transmission. Often I'll leave my my aw4 in drive instead of overdrive and find that I'll get slightly better mileage because the truck isn't working as hard. It's the same with most yj's fifth gears. The engine struggles in fifth and your mpg drops. Get the tires on their and drive it, then decide if you can drop the gearing. I know on one of my yj's I went from 4:10 to 4:88s and got better mileage accross the board as the engine/tranny/ and gear combo worked better for most daily driver conditions

Most Certain This Has Been Gone Over...

You are correct on 32's. I did 5 to 5.5 lift and could not get 255 85 16s to fit, so I dropped down to 32s. The Dana 35 is fine for 32s, as long as you can live with its inherent issues. Depending on the axle and year, c clip 35s suck. But for every day driver they are sufficient. Now if your wheeling it I can show you lots of pics of bad things that can happen, including my fathers recent 35 woes. That said, he was running 35s, with 4:88 gearing and lockers before she gave way....... What kind of wheels and tires are you trying to get? -

That's just ugly. And I ride a gs BMW, so you know I generally like ugly -
Just saw your last reply. Only use measurements off your front end, like hornbrods photo

I've found that most shops suck! My stepdad was a front end specialist for 20 years. And he swears by the tape measure method on all jeep xj, tj, and mj's. The result, 50,000 on my last set of mud tired on my LJ. Mj currently has 15k and barely showing wear. Find a way to get it toed in slightly and never go back to a shop that can't align a rig on their first try. A lot of shops can't find the only bolt in a box if fit isn't stock and they can't call oreilys

Need Some Help With A Few Things
Usamedic replied to Usamedic's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I'm leaning toward hanson front and rear, then customize the hanson rear with a tire carrier New steering meant removal of my complete 2006 LJ steering with 60k on it and put it on the manche. Wildernest is a camper shell like an at flipac but much older I was thinking that I remembered companies building aftermarket grill like 12-16 horizontal square tubes, like they still make for Chevys -
Ruthless bastards! I love it.Gonna go try tightening my track bar, that damn pop is killing me.

It's a wildernest. They went out of business in 92 or 93, and have a cult like following not unlike Comanches. Fairly simple really, but it can be hard to find parts in good condition. They were made for full size and small pickups in both long and short bed. Couple dedicated websites for them out there too so some good info is available -
This is posted under project vasi, but I was hoping to get as much input as possible so here goes. 1.Where can I find the CHIEF lettering and Vinyl Stripes for my truck? The vinyl can be done by my paint guy, but the "CHIEF" letters for both doors....... 2. Where can I find a bumper / tire carrier? I don't want it in the back of the bed, and it won't fit underneath, I got to have a good tire Carrier. I like Hanson type bumper / carriers 3. Where I find a two slide, rear sliding glass window be found? I have a single piece sliding window, but I'd like to get one with two as it will match the wildernest 4. I have a noise/clank/rattle whatever when cranking the steering from left to right or when steering while driving, and I cannot figure out what it is. I have new steering, new control arms, new track bar. It was there when I got the truck and is still there..................... 5. Would you have the wilderness painted to match your truck? I am leaning toward yes, and toward 2014 toxic orange / ppg 921365 6. Any alternative or aftermarket grills out there? 6. Lastly, thinking of going crazy and painting a lot parts underneath. Whats the best way to paint bolt heads without getting too much paint on them?
