Sorry to threadjack, but it's related. Eagle, how do you shim the stop bolts? I've got 31x10.5s on the stock "turbine" style rims. I've sen this mention a half a dozen times and everytime I ask nobody coughs up the proper way to do this.

anyone here run SOA and 31's?

perhaps they just like more ground clearance. Trust me when I say that these folks aren't a stranger to a Sawzall. There are some pretty extreme rigs on here, and they go places that a stock suspension truck couldn't. It's not just about tires, but articulation also. -
This might make ya sick....I just bought a Comanche for $400

Yeah, I was 5 when my truck was built. That's alright, it has just as much life experienceas me, and we're teaching eachother about being a proper jeep owner. I keep fixing and she keeps breaking. Jeep-Making mechanics out of ordinary people for decades. -
I can't offer much help, as my AX-15 was already in the truck when I bought it. I can tell you to go and get the proper AX-15 clutch hose. The BA-10 one is too long, and doens't have the right bends to mate up to the AX-15 cleanly. You can get it at NAPA, it was $18. I don't have the part #, but I do have the box at home, so if you can't find it let me know. The problem with the clutch hose being to long is that the extra slack lets the hose touch the exhaust. That's how mine failed. Edit: If you need any pictures of the corssmenbers or anything then let me know. It looked like my crossemember had to be moved about an inch back, I have a set of threaded hoes that are unused. Of course those may have been for the auto tranny from the factory. I can take pictures of anything you want on the AX-15 in my 87.

Steerings not important on something that big, you just go over it or bash it :)

Funny, I've got those too. -
that green cj(?) is real bad.

I have a similar problem, although it's not progressed to DW yet. My trackbar bushings are worn. Reach under there grab the trackbar and yank on it as hard as you can. Mine moves about a 1/4" of an inch if you really wrestle with it. Time to replace bushings :) -
well, I burped it again last night using the temp sensor hole. There wasn't any air that I could see, Fluid up about half way in the hole with the temp sensor out. I poured some more coolant into the bottle and it just flowed out of the hole. I wailed on her this morning on the way to work, then popped the top on the bottle. I heard some boiling, I'm not sure where it came from though. I will do it some more and we'll see.
-
I will keep trying to fluh the air from the system. I will run it hard on my way to work, then burp the bottle when I get there.

27=the big by the way, that's impressive.

So, after I did new thermo and a coolant system fluch The temp guage on the 87 started reading lower than when I bought it. It still seemed to be in the proper range though, it would climb to about 3/4 of the way between the first mark and the 210 mark. I figured that was about 190. Today, I noticed that it was closer down to the first white mark, 160 maybe? The odd thing happens when I turn on the heater. I Turned the heater onto full heat and the temp gauge went up to the middle of the marks. Now that doesn't make any sense to me, I would think it would drop, since the heater is removing more engine heat. The Engine seems to run fine, I don't think it's dropping into open loop yet. Today the temp was about 20*, yesterday was the same, and it wasn't doing this. I'm beginning to think the thermostat is a bit wonky. Perhaps turning on the heater relieves some of the pressure on the thermostat and it closes again? Heat is good, I'm not losing coolant, the bottle is still at the same level. I've "burped" the system twice since I've flushed and filled it. I pulled the back wheel up onto a 2 foot section of my retaining wall, popped the temp sender and waited for coolant to come out the hole. The second time I did it there was no air. Any ideas.

how's this, I drove by one about 10 miles from town on a state route, parked in a drive. I gt back to town, was in the shop for about a half hour. Went outside, and there's this old guy going over my MJ. here's a transcript. Me- "Hi" him-"this your jeep?" "Yes sir" "That's mine over there." He was driving a clean white Eliminator 4x4 SWB. Same one I saw two hours prior. I swear, this things congregate on their own, it's like "Maximum Overdrive" They have minds of their own.

it could be a newer cavalier.
-
thats what it sounded like.

well, that makes it interesting then. A few problems with my spare carrier. A PO put a rollpan on the truck. Why you would do that to a 4x4 Jeep I have no idea. I'm not sure if I can get to the winch. I also have no factory accesories. No jack, no handle. Currently my jack is a floor jack in my toolbox. I take it that the handle has a matching end to the winch? More than likely looking like a u-joint that's in 2 pieces.
-
the one in the bed (spare) does have the SS trim ring. I guess I didn't notice that in the picture. So likely thats an original, or that's the standard spare. I have the exact tires as xj maki. o I assume that I have the OWL tire option, whatever that is. On another note, I'm tired of the spare in my bed, will the spare fit underneath with a 31" tire? Also, how exactly does that attachment work, I'm not sure I have all the pieces. It's a cable with what looks to be a big wing nut. Oh to have an owners manaul.
-
sounds like the uber-gnarly. Get some pics ASAP! :)

yep, thems the wheels I have. I wonder if they came from the same truck that donated the engine/trans swap, or if they're original. Oh well, I like how tey look, I'm keepin them.

I'd check the IAC, and clean it up. THen move on to vacuum , maybe the cold has opened up a crack in a vac line somewhere. -
Brake porpotioning valve...
87manche replied to DirtyComanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
good to know. It's not something I ever plan on doing, but I'm curious about everything. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna put in a 96+ booster, a stock XJ propo valve and new lines. -
thanks DC. I've got rims that look like these. but with a black center cap that says jeep. and the spare looks like this [/img]
-
does anyone know what rims would have come stock on an 87 pioneer? I've got one steel rim in the bed, and what I believe are 4 wagoneer rims on the axles. Better yet, how does one measure backspacing? Then I could just figure it out myself.

Brake porpotioning valve...
87manche replied to DirtyComanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
you have any more info on that setup? I'm not familiar with how it works at all. I assume it's just like a secondary brake booster? I need to change out my brake booster, so I was just going to go with a 96+ xj dual diaphragm model. -
I don't see why hacking a TPS into another system wouldn't work. It may even be easier to not use the TPS and built a custom pot for the throttle sensor. It might be easier to go with a linear sensor on one of the throttle bellcrank rods. I'm thinking of some stuff I've done for model airplanes here. I don't know what all signals the TCU takes to make it's calculations. I would imagine that somewhere in there it must measure engine speed, and I imagine it get's that signal from the ECU. You might want to email Brett from AWShifting. http://awshifting.com/ he may have some insight as to how it works. He's tinkered with it for a while is my understanding. Edit: I took my own advice and checked it out. http://awshifting.com/1-0.htm he does have a totally self contained shifting system deigned to put an AW4 behinf an older engine or a manual swap. Look like you ony use the shifter to select park forward or reverese, and a switch to control the tranny shifting. I would bet that if you got real creative you could use some relays and a simple binary counter to do an autostick, or even paddle shifters on the steering wheel. I'd love to help engineer that if you're up to it. My brother has an AW4 and was going to get Bretts shifter kit, so ifwe make it work for him I'll give you schematics.
