Rokhound
Ok guys some of you guys no that I have order my beadlocks for the MJ I decided to go with a local Iowa company called DIY4x. They were $45 a wheel so $180 and $40 in bolts. And then I went with a 34x10.5 TSL on a 8” American Racing rim. I finally got one all bolted together and mounted on the truck. These are the do it your self type the inner ring just set inside the lip of the wheel then you weld that to the rim and mount the tire on the rim like you normally would leaving the out side bead over the outside lip so that you can smash the tire to the rim with 32 bolts. BLHTAZ
Forgive my ignorance as I have never worked with them, but it appears that you are using them on a normal wheel and I thought that beadlocks where a complete wheel & plate combination because the wheel had to be designed a special way to mount the tire and rings. I know you said the the back ring was welded on, but at $45 per wheel, that can't be wheel and rings can it??
tjbliley
This is a conversion kit. It converts a regular wheel to a beadlock. the ring he is talking about does just bolt to the inside of the rim. you grind away the pain/powder and weld it in. this is where the outside lock ring bolts to. BLHTAZ
That's what I figured, but I was really curious as to how it worked and their site doesn't offer any good pics or explanations that I can find. I found some on their site that I like, but they offer "inside the lip" and "outside the lip". Obviously you are supposed to be somewhat educated on these before buy so I am trying to learn a little here to see if I want to go this way or just buy some complete wheels for our YJ when I am ready. ;)
Rokhound
taz here is a good write up using the DIY4x rings. http://www.planet4x4.net/forums/diy4xbeadlocks.php and yes I will take a pic of the rim with the inner ring i think that will help you a understand how they work. But yes you take a standard rim and weld the inner ring to in.
LEAD_NOT_FOLLOW
The DIY4x kit does not include the conti-rings though does it?
BLHTAZ
:smart: OK...now I got it :D . When you said to weld the "inner" ring, I was imagining it being on the "inner" side of the rim...not the inner ring on the "outside" of the rim. That artilce explained it well. Sorry...as I said...I have never dealt with beadlocks at all  . I knew "what" they did, just never worried about "how" they did it ;) . mvusse
Be aware that a lot of beadlock rims and as far as I know all DIY beadlock kits are NOT DOT approved. If you drive your rig on public roads, you may want to make sure the ones you are getting are legal for road use. Also, one thing I did not see on the site is a sleeve that goes inside the tire between the inside and outside beads. With the sleeve, as you bolt on the outside ring, it pinches the tire between the ring and the sleeve, and at the same time pushes the sleeve in, pinching the inside bead between the sleeve and the welded ring. Without the sleeve, I see no way of a beadlock being very beneficial. And I know of no kits that offer a sleeve without having to cut the outside lip off the original rim before installation. I do not have beadlock rims, but have researched them in the past. All I'm saying is do your research/home work before you buy.
Rokhound
mvusse do you have a link to this rims with the inner sleeve. Because the one that i seen where you cut the outer ring off the rim did not come with that inner sleeve. So if i could get a link that would be great. ------------------------------------------------------- LEAD_NOT_FOLLOW what are conti-rings are you talking about the same thing that mvusse is speaking of
mvusse
Sorry, but no link. It's been well over a year since I was looking at beadlocks for the Suburban. I got bored on a rainy day and spent like 10 hours browsing the web that day.
Rokhound
thats cool because the only ones i have ever seen were the H-1 with the set up that you are speaking of but then again I didnt search for that set up so i could missed them
Rokhound
ok since this got moved to the tech side of things i guess i can throw some info on how I mounted these. Not say it right just adding to this post Ok I found this pic and I think it show really well how this style of beadlocks works. Now just the rim with the inner ring welded to the rim and painted. Then mount the tire like you normally would. Leave the outside lip of the tire hanging on the outer lip of the rim/ring. Then you need to find something for the tire/rim combo to set on I went with a cement block. Then center the tire on the rim and the outer ring on the tire. Then I took 4 bolts and ran them down with an impact until they were snug this will keep the tire centered. Then add the rest of your bolt and tighten in a criss cross pattern. mvusse
And what prevents the bead of the inside of the rim from popping?
Rokhound
And what prevents the bead of the inside of the rim from popping? nothing but if you think about how many time do you pop of the inside bead before the outer bead of the tire. Some people say that you can use some kind of black windsheld clue to help. here is a link over on pirate talking about differnt things that can be used. http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthre ... t=beadlock
pingpong
The only issue I have with DIY beadlocks is most ppl don't set them up properly. By this I mean they don't true the rim after installor as they are installng the inner ring. No biggie for a trail machine... but can be a problem on a street driven rig.
