Busted Speedo Cable?

Recommended Posts

I think the clip on the end of mine broke off when I pulled the old Cluster Out... I'm assuming that keeping the Cable on the Speedo without a clip will prove fairly difficult? I can't even seem to get my hand back there to push the cable on to where it was suppose to clip anyhow...Maybe my hands are too fat...

Duck tape!! quack, quack........ It'd work for a lil while I guess,,, or you could just run without a speedo,, and keep the miles off of it!! My brother did that for about 3 year when he was in collage... Just let you know he got a good trade-in value.. lol,, such a crook....

How much of a pain is it to change the speedo cable? Mine keeps making that annoying noise like there is a bird behind my cluster.

???? x2...

I'm sure I can round one up from one of my 4x4Club guys or JY, I just don't want to completely disassemble my Dash to get the thing installed...

It's not hard to do. You can do it in less than half an hour. I think there's 4 screws that hold the dash bezel in place. Then pull the cluster out by taking out those screws. (I think it was 7 or 8). Put the "new cable" on. Make sure you have the same style clamp. stick the cable back into the housing. If you get lucky it'll slide back into the speedo gear in the transfer case. If it doesn't just pull the speedo cable out of the tranfer case. Set the cable back into the gear and put it back in the transfer case.

Remember to grease the cable when you put it back into the housing so the needle on your speedo won't vibrate. I just don't know what a good grease is because I used petro-gel lubricant that I use on my restaurant equipment and it didn't last more than two weeks. I'm sure someone else on here can tell you what is good.

Right, so I had my cluster all the way off last night.. So I know/see the busted clipped Cluster end of the cable... Where it connects into speedo gear @ the T-Case, is there a clip or connector or something, or if I just "yank" on the cable, it will slip out?

***Never mind*** I just looked at the Pics that Mini Beast had on his For Sale on in the Classifieds and see the connection in the first pic....

Two small bolts hold the bracket in place at the transfer case. Pull these and the whole piece pulls off. If you still can't get the cable into the gear you have to unscrew the large nut and fanaggle from there. I'll take pics tonight if you need em. I just did it again yesterday when I changed my speedo gear to the correct tooth count. The work under the truck took me less than 10 minutes. It's not hard as long as your patient and have good tools.

So I don't have to run the cable all the way down thru the dash and to the transfer case? the speedo cable will just slide thru the tube thats their right down to the transfer case?

exactly, however the cable doesn't always slide right into the speedo gear in the transfer case

What a tremendous pain in the pooper... I just spent a couple hours at the PnP taking apart XJ Dashes to try to get the right cable...I've discovered that there are at least 3 different types of Speedo Cables in use (all out of 89 or 90 XJ's, and one '86).

The cable that came out of my MJ is a solid Single Piece from the dash down to the T-case and the Clip that connects to the back of the Speedo is Crimped onto the Cable itself. Then there is the 2 Piece Cable and another that the clip is connected to the wire itself and comes out of the tube. So I had to disassemble about 10 XJ's to find the right cable and one that wasn't busted. I assume I could have used any, but since that's what came out of mine, that's what I'm going to put back in.

BTW, no MJ's at all (not terribly surprised), probably 20 XJ's... I didn't really have time to look thru everything, but was hopeing to maybe find a white one with a good pass side fender or front clip, but no dice. I did get some grey screw covers that were missing from mine. I already have a Rear 44, so wasn't really even looking at Axles or anything.

So now I hope to get this one installed and put my dash back together this evening.
