2wd drive shaft for 4wd

Recommended Posts

well mine is a 1990, but it is for my buddy's 1987. He did swap in an ax 15 though, I don't know if that will effect the spline count. how hard is it to change the yoke i have seen a 2wd shaft it looked larger in diameter.

The 2wd shaft is larger in diameter, yes, but they use the same U-joints. If you can change a U-joint, you can change the yoke.

Is he going from 2wd to 4wd or just needing a replacement? If he's going to 4wd, he'll need to have his driveshaft shortened anyway, and chances are whoever does it will put in new joints to ensure a proper balance. Just give them the 4wd yoke to put on.

When I converted mine, I didn't do that, and had to change it out myself. My truck is a 91, Ax-5 and NP207 are from an 86 cherokee, and the 4wd yoke I put on is from a 91 Ax-15/NP231 cherokee.

No.

2wd ones are 21 spline, 4wd ones are 27.

The AW4 Spline count changed mid 1990.

I think that both the 2WD and 4WD spline counts prior were the same, and than both changed mid 1990 as well. I don't think that the spline count has anything to do with the 2WD vs. 4WD.

like I posted on NAXJA, no, it won't fit.....your friend will need a 4WD yoke.

Motion, you have to compare the output splines of the 2WD tranny (at the end of the extension housing), which is 21 spline like Genovast said, to the 231 output, which is 27 spline.

I made the same assumption when I converted mine to 4WD as well

Correct. I was just referring to the tranny itself. I think I took Genovast's post wrong as he was saying that the outputs of the AW4 were different based on if it was a 2WD or 4WD. I guess I should of been a bit more specific with the info.

Also just remember for reference that the NP231/242 has 2 different input spline counts based on what tranny/year it had. So not all TC's are created equal for those of you looking for parts to do a 4wd swap.
